Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Do I have to lock the camshafts to replace the bank 1 chain tensioner and then the IMS side tensioner? Or this can be done one after the other, simply by unbolting and bolting the new one? I am talking about items 24 and 35 on this diagram

POST 2Original post

It is best to lock the crank pulley at TDC using the teardrop shaped hole in the crank pulley. You can use a 5/16 drill bit for this. Lock the cams by pulling the 2 green plug by the back of the cam (back of car on driver side and opposite end of motor on Passenger side). There is a special tool that will fit into the slots in the end of the cams and a flat in the center that you can bolt to the head. It will fit both heads. Change the cam chain tensioner on the side it fits into. Once it is done, pull the tool, remove the lock from the crank pulley, rotate the engine 360 degrees, re-insert the lock in the pulley, install the special tool on the other head and then change that tensioner. The M9603, 3 chain engine does not have a lot of chain wrap on the cam sprockets and it is easier for the chain to jump a tooth on these engines compared to the 5 chain engines. Good luck with your repair. Mark
