Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I haven't found any real details on the 996 3.4l engine describing major service points other than changing fluid and the accessory belt.

Why are the engines being replaced instead of the seal?

A leaking RMS does NOT necessitate an engine change nor does it cause an engine failure.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Guys,
My current car is a 1994 968 Cabriolet with 182k miles on it. I commute 100 miles a day in it, hence the high mileage. So far, it's been trouble free but since I need it to be rock solid reliable, I was looking to update it. I test drove an '01 Boxster S and wasn't overly impressed. But while searching Autotrader, I noticed the price of 99-01 996 cab's were favorable. I read a few threads here about many cars making it over 100k. My questions are around a few areas.
What's the RMS issue? I understand it's the Rear Main Seal. Why are the engines being replaced instead of the seal? Is there a repair without replacing the engine? Due to the miles I commute, any warranty I could get would quickly expire. I am very handy in the wrenching area and have maintained many P-cars over the years and almost all of them made 200k with proper maintenance.
Does anyone work on their own 996? Sounds like the transmission can be removed without removing the engine. Is this true?
What other areas should I be concerned with? What about the top?
Thanks in advance for the help!

I found plenty of info on the RMS issue and a full DIY on how to correct it. So other than the RMS issue, any other things to worry about?

A leaking RMS does NOT necessitate an engine change nor does it cause an engine failure. Most RMS leaks are so small that then seep a little. My dealer replaced mine under warranty during a visit to have them do a couple of minor warranty items. It never dripped any oil on the garage floor. I wasn't even aware it was leaking.
If you have to replace it on your own dime, most wait until the clutch needs replacing and do both at the same time to save on labor costs. Two fixes for one labor cost.
Thanks Tim. I have been researching alot tonight and also found the FAQ. One thing I am not clear on, does this engine use variocam? I have this on my 968 and you have to pull the cams every now and then to replace the pads on the tensioner. The 968 also drives both cams via a belt from the crank that needs to be replaced at specific intervals. I haven't found any real details on the 996 3.4l engine describing major service points other than changing fluid and the accessory belt. So how about it? Will I be in for a shock at the lack of scheduled maintenance compared to my 4 cylinder?

Tony,
'99 - '01 cars have variocam and '02 - '04 have variocam plus. I am not aware of any special maintenance that need to be done for the variocam, but others who know more than I do may have some different info.
