POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Let me start this by saying I'm only 20, and broke as 20 years old guys usually are So no 911 for me, yet. However, I got some good plans for the future, and whenever I think about becoming rich and how it would affect my life, I can only see cars.. Not a large house, not a yacht, nothing like that. Only cars. 911GT3 and Alpina B3, side by side, for example I mostly think about the 911 though. I've been admiring it since I knew what a car is. I can say my will to succeed financially is greatly boosted whenever I visit Rennlist and read about those wonderful cars. It really drives me forward - Heck, it's almost educational I wonder, has any of you been dreaming about a 911 since he was a kid, but never could afford it, and then one day everything changed for the better, and suddenly owning the car of his dreams became a reality? For those, what it was like to step into the dealership and order it? And what was the delivery like? I'd really appreciate some stories I'm always drawn to delivery posts from excited owners... Thanks

POST 2Original post

Roee, a poster of 964 turbo basically motivated me through high school and 8+ years of college. I never wanted a huge house or yaght's either, all i wanted were cars, especially a porsche. Finally got mine a year ago, an 03 C4S, and i absolutely love it. My wife knew even before we got married that i will get a porsche, but she convinced me to buy a family car, an SUV and a decent house to park the porsche first, and I am glad she did. But, still my 3 cars add upto almost the same $ as my home. So, have a plan and stick with it (for me it's staying at school) , 3 new cars and a home in 4 years since graduation ain't bad, and it's just the beginning. It has all been more wonderful than I ever had dreamed. So, there is definitely a bright light at the end of the tunnel if you have a plan and stick to it.

POST 3Original post

i started dreaming about porsches when i saw the first print ads for the turbo carrera in '75. i was all of 10-yrs old then. i still have a woody for that car...with the "turbo" decal across the rear flank.

POST 4Original post

Ever since I was a kid, I'd always dreamed about having 'special' cars. I grew up with my parents having a 1960 Rambler Classic, and a 1963 Ford Fairlane wagon. (They'd be kind of cool now, huh? Back then, they were boring!) My first dream of owning a specific car was a 1990 BMW 325is in white. Too expensive. I did gravitate to BMW's though - first owning a 1994 325i. A good friend is a Porsche guy, and got me started when he pointed out that a Porsche is a much better track car than a BMW - and I was starting to do club driving events. We each bought 944's for the track (I still have mine and love it), but he kept going on about the virtues of the 911, and how I could track one also from time to time. Well, he finally wore me down, and last year we both bought new Porsches on the same day - me the 996, while he picked up an '03 Boxster S. Great fun, and a bonding experience to boot. I've got lots of pictures from the delivery! Good luck - I'm sure you'll get what you want.

POST 5Original post

I dont know when I first started lusting a 911 but I know I was young, probably around 8 or 9 years old. At that time I was growing up in London, England, with my family living on Social Security (Welfare) and happy in the knowledge that I would never earn the kind of money necessary to own such a beast. I also dont know why it appealed to me back then when there were so many other sexier vehicles such as Ferraris etc. but that it was for me. I do remember thinking that the 959 was the coolest thing around and being very upset that people were buying them and then not using them what a waste! I lusted after cars until I was around 23 and then I started getting into motorcycles. That pretty much took care of my lusting as to get motorcycle performance you had to spend a lot more money. There is also something about a bike that even the Porsche can't match - something about actually being part of the machine. If you don't ride then you probably won't get it. My wife always knew that I wanted a Porsche but I had been putting it off even though I could now afford to get one it didnt seem particularly sensible with 3 young kids so I never brought the subject up. Instead I had an MR2 Spyder which was a lot of fun and a lot cheaper too (and the bikes of course). This year on our anniversary my wife gave me a card over dinner. Along with the usual what a fabulous husband you are stuff she had written Lets go buy that Porsche you always wanted! I started looking that weekend. For me it had to be a 911 that was the only Porsche that I was interested in. My first test drive almost put an end to the dream. I was trying to keep costs reasonable and so I looked at a used 2001 Cab. I took it for a drive andit was HORRIBLE! I almost walked away at that point and never looked back but something in my mind said hold on, how can it be that so many people lust after these as real drivers cars. Instead I asked to take out an 03 C4S that was parked next to it and, wow! What a difference. The first one must have been very tired and not well looked after but this thing was awesome. As I had a 2WD cab already I thought that was what I wanted in the 911 too but my heart really skipped a beat every time I saw the coupe, particularly the C4S with that wide rear, so that was finally the direction that I went in. I also loved the feel of the 4WD drive it just felt like you could not make it go off the road if you tried. I picked up my 03 C4S about two months ago. As I was leaving the dealers I wondered Was this a smart thing to do? About 200 yards later I had no doubt that I had done the right thing. Keep your spirits up, dont be afraid to take chances and remember that inconvenience is a misperceived adventure and you will do fine.

POST 6Original post

I actually started lusting pre-911's though got to drive a friend's 911 when they first came out (when I was about 16). I waited a long time, raising kids, buying homes, etc., and though I looked at them on and off, it was never quite practical or affordable. I finally got a new 1993 RS America. This was after my 1992 divorce, which opened the door to take care of myself for a change. I wish my girlfriend (now my wife) had a camera when I pulled up in the new 911 that evening - I am sure I had a mile wide grin. The grins have never stopped!

POST 7Original post

Ok has everyone seen the the new Porsche 997 T.V spots. If not , it goes like... this a boy is in school and when he looks out of the window he see's the new Porsche driving thru.So after school he goes to the Local Porsche Dealership, he parks his Bicycle walks in and asks a salesman(whom is walking by) where the new 911 is. The salesman points to it, the boy sits in the car looks around a bit, gets out and walks over to the salesman. He then asks the salesman if he could have a card, the salesman smiles and gives him one. The Boy in turn smiles back and says " I'll see you in about 20 years"...............................Well That boy was me 22 years and i was in Germany when i first saw this Machine..........................I'll never go any where else!

POST 8Original post

WOW, this is totally amazing, mine is almost a similar story, instead of the card the salesman gave me the big poster of the 964 turbo, and also I never sat in one as I promised myself that I wouldn't till I can afford one, and I did see a porsche dealer about 15 years later to get my own Wonder whether this is a recurring theme.

POST 9Original post

I test drove one with a buddy of mine and we were open to the sales rep that we couldn't afford one, but hoped to in the future. He was super cool and let us drive the '99 996 in 1998. We both left in lust. OMG We thanked him, and I said I'd hope to see him again with a check and an order. 1 year later, my startup that I joined had IPO'd and I was back with a check and an order. That was my first of 3 996's. The blue 2000 was it. Ordering it sucked actually. Waiting on it sucked. Taking Delivery.... FREAKIN' HEAVEN!!! The next two were much more fun to order because I had a 996 to drive while waiting for their arrival. Here are the pics of all 3: 2000 C2 Ocean/Savanna 2002 C2 Seal/Met Blue 2002 Twin Turbo Seal/GG (don't have a good pic that's not huge)

POST 10Original post

I fell in love with Porsche's and the 911 since before I can remember. It really motivated me to do well. When I started programming I had a small model 911 and the screen saver up... when it was 2am and everyone went home and I was still writing code I would just look at that car and ask myself 'so you really want that, huh? What are you going to do for it?' and it would get me by. Now I'm on my second 911, the first was a 2001 C4 and I actually got teary eyed when I sold it... wow that's some emotion for a car.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's exactly the kind of replies I hoped for It really gives hopes for a better tomorrow and all that, you know Anyone else cares to tell his story?

POST 12Original post

For me it was "Risky Business" and there is "no substisture" that made go out and get 928 as soon as I was able to afford one.

POST 13Original post

Wow, this is a great thread! I was going to make one kind of like this. Asking what kind of motivations made all of you guys so sucessful. Not necessarily jobs, but what kind of attitudes/ etc. got you to where you are today. Great Post Roee; I feel just like you. Everytime I see a Porsche on the street, I get the chills (corny, I know). I feel like flickering the lights or honking the horn at them, but I don't want them to think I'm crazy.

POST 14Original post

Probably showing my age here but ...... I've always loved fast cars. Had several including AM DB6, Triumph Stag and an Etype V12. My 996 is my 3rd 911. My first was bought in the late 70s. Once you drive these cars it's hard to look at anything else. But I have had other cars between my 911s. While they have moved with the times and they got faster and more up to date, IMHO they aren't as reliable. But my 996 still puts the hairs up on my back when I open my garage doors Here's me and my left hooker in Paris 1979.

POST 15Original post

My first was my 1996 993C4S I bought for my 40th birthday. My next will be a 997 (athough I am seriously considering a used 996 until the 997 has been out a year or so). My only regret is not buying one sooner! Take my advice, though. Try to wait until you can pay cash. Debt debt can kill your greatest wealth building tool...your income!

POST 16Original post

Scouser - that's pretty scary. My dad had the same car in burgundy. He bought it at the age of 36 - 1972 911 E Targa. I have a picture of him standing next to it when he got it and have had it for with me for 20 years. When he brought it home I knew then (at 7 years old) I would have one someday. I bought mine when I was 36 - when I drove it to his house I showed him the car and gave him the pic of him with his. We both cried. If I can find the pic I'll post it. FYI, a buddy of mine in high school also owned a Stag - great car!

POST 17Original post

First of all - what a great thread! The stories behind the individuals and their cars is what makes a Porsche a Porsche. I knew that a Porsche was for me ever since age 6 or 7. The neighbor across the street had a brown 911 with this humongous whale tail on it. I would lie in my bed at night making the revving sounds like I was driving it. The neighbor was an ophthalmologist so I thought I had to be an MD to get a porsche. lol... Anyway I did fall in love with medicine and the noble thought of helping others so I always hoped to become a doctor but I did not share the Porsche story during my med school interview Anyway, in the middle of my residency(spring of '02), I'm realizing that my '98 suburban with 70K on the clock is about to drop it's tranny so I might consider moving into a new one. Then one of my closest friends says just drive it another year and then get that Porsche that you've always wanted........well the seed was planted! 3 mos later I sold my truck to carmax and took delivery of a new '03 Boxster S. I had always lusted after the 911 series but I felt that a resident shouldn't be driving a 911 and I was being responsible with my money. Ohh the lies you will tell yourself! Needless to say, the box lasted 9 mos before I got my first 911. I've spent the last 3 mos optioning it exactly how I want it and now it is "complete". Then on the drive today, my fiancee point out that she really likes another boarders car and says that I should've gotten that one (polar silver 996 turbo). Ohhh, soooo cruel! BTW, my parents promised me a 911 if I got into medical school. They were the first people I called when I received my acceptance letter and reminded them of their promise they had made 10 yrs prior. They lived up to it by surprising me with a red matchbox 911 turbo with the big whale tail! My mother smiled, said congratulations, and then informed me that the rest was up to me. That red porsche was always on my desk and helped keep me awake during some all-nighters by keeping my goal always in front of me. THis car will stay with me for the rest of my life and hopefully will pass it on to my son(s) someday!

POST 18Original post

These are all great stories! This morning hanging out with my 2 1/2 y/o daughter - she likes to pretend I'm her and she's Daddy -she asked where I want to go - I said Disneyland. She got out her imaginary key. I asked what kind of car Daddy had - she said "Por-sha", Mom asked her what kind of she had, she said "Por-sha". She said "OK, let's go", and said "Zoom, zoom, zoom." I think I am creating another p-car nut!

POST 19Original post

My first Porsche was a 1956 1600S with Hirth crank and chromium cylinder liners. I miss it very much. I remember I could "walk away" from chevy small block V8s from 80 mph roll. Ah, those were the days.....Of course, my 02 C2 is fun too.

POST 20Original post

I had a poster of a white 911 cabriolet on my wall in high school and part of college (fell apart after too many moves). Nearly 15 years later I was finally able to buy my first Porsche, a guards red 83 cabriolet, similar to my old poster.

POST 22Original post

I'd admired the 911 through high school and college, but could only afford a '72 240Z at the time. Work, marriage and travel took us into 2001 and a financial windfall and suddenly we both decided it was time for a Porsche. We spent a lot of time looking at various options and colors, and ordered a 2002 as soon as the dealership could take the order. We were told to expect a possible December but probable January build date, and actual delivery a couple months later. The wait was the worst part. Our order was placed in late August/early September 2001 and we didn't expect to see the car until March 2002. The salesman called us in mid October and said the car had been moved up and he'd have more info in a couple of days. Then he called a few days later - the car had been built on October 17, passed inspection and was sent for shipment on October 18. Salesman called me December 11 and said the truck had just arrived with the car - I told him I was leaving work immediately. When I got to the dealership there was a crowd of sales and mechanics around the car - the salesman said they didn't get many cars in our color and fewer still with all the leather options we had. I went over the car with a fine-toothed comb and didn't find a single gripe. The paint was perfect, the build was perfect and the interior smell alone was worth the price of admission. Things only went uphill from there once the motor started. When my wife drove the car the first time and opened it up a little, she just looked over at me and grinned. We're still grinning. We've had her over two and a half years now and we still find ourselves looking back at her as we walk across a parking lot. These are expensive cars to buy and relatively expensive to maintain, and they're worth every penny.

This is one of best post ever... instead of talk about how we spent money on mods, I believe those stories will inspire many youngman and grow on them... this is real email the day I got my 996 I sent to my wife... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hon, after 25 years waiting, just bought myself first 911. =) when I was 13, I went to my friend's house for a party, his uncle show up with a white 911. I was stared at that beautiful machine that human ever made for longest time... I told myself - one day, one day you will be in that car... 25 years later, the boy's dream come true... while I'm telling you this old story, my eyes are getting blur... I won't let it fallen on my face because this is the happy time... thank you for the support. L, E --------------------------------------------------------------------- Roee - all I can tell you is "very emotional", but you have to experience yourself. No rush, step by step, don't jump too fast, the day will come.

Between my wife and I there were several in our history. I started out at age 16 working in an exotic sports car restoration shop, hand-rubbing coats of laquer on Ferraris, Jags, Porsches, Triumphs, Jensens, you name it. The boss had a bran new '82 Porsche 928 (I believe it was a turbo - can't remember) in Red with tan leather. What a beauty! My friend and I got to wash it every friday evening and then take it for a spin down the Blvd. I was in heaven. I really got bitten by the Porsche bug at that time. I was racing BMW 2002's at the time and switched to a '75 VW Scirocco (heavily modified) for the FWD slalom classes. I always wanted a 911 but it took many years to get there. Our list of sports cars: '67, '69, '71 BMW 2002's '67 BMW 2000 ti-lux '67 BMW 2000 cs '73 Porsche 914 ?MY? Porsche 914-6 (wife's car) '75 VW Scirocco, heavily modified illegal street car '71 Fiat 850 spyder '69 Alfa Romeo "Boat-tail" spyder '67 Mustang 'verti '70 Corvette '73 Corvette 454, race version '77 Porsche 911, updated body kit (the first 911 in the family) '86 Porsche 911 cab (company gratuity car - never was mine - but I got to drive it) '86 Porsche Turbo cab, triple black (car-jacked in L.A. in '91) '89 BMW M3 (loved those first edition M3's) '91 BMW 535i '99 Porsche 996 C2 (my favorite of the bunch by far) '02 Mini Cooper S (son's car - and it is a blast!) '04 Mini Cooper S, MC-40 limited edition with the "Works" package (picking it up this Friday) My wife is getting rid of her SUV as she wants a sports car and she fell in love with the new Mini limited edition. I'm glad because now I pretty much have the 996 to myself!

POST 25Original post

my first porsche was a 1976 912e--bought it new for $9500--white with red vinyl interior--i was 25 years old and i thought i'de died and gone to heaven! my first 911 was a 1979 guards red 911sc with full black leather interior--it hadn't sold because it lacked a sunroof. i drooled at that car for 8 mos! finally in feb, 1980 the dealer sold it to me at dealer cost--$25,000 including 5% sales tax! i think they were tired of seeing me hanging around plus the new model year 911's were beginning to arrive. i've never tired of the classic 911 shape... i guess i'm not alone. i do not miss the rear end off throttle instability of my 79 911sc! 993's and 996's are much better and much safer cars.
