I decided to spend much less and build me a complete better flowing exhaust system (than stock) using Fabspeed parts.

I am looking at the 996 GT3 Exhaust Kit which includes headers, cats, mufflers, tips. Does anyone have any thoughts on this kit. It seems to retail for around $5-6K USD. Is it worth it? Is the gain they claim realistic (+25HP)? Any downside to this kit?

No. Look the X51 kit changes the headers, heads, cams, intake and gain only 25 HP. Do you think that exhaust alone can get that power. I have talked to many people and they believe that there is not much to be gained in the exhaust. I hear 10-12 HP at best. I think the claim for 25 HP is based on a GT3 series 1. That engine has the free flowing heads and intake that can use more exhaust flow.
Yes, the GT3 cup exhaust system will bolt onto a stock 996. Is it worth it? I don't think so. I decided to spend much less and build me a complete better flowing exhaust system (than stock) using Fabspeed parts. Their sport cats will be available in a couple of weeks to complete my system.
FYI, the GT3 comes stock with a stock-like exhaust system. I bought my Fabspeed mufflers from a Rennlist GT3 owner that tried several exhaust systems and went back to the stock. He told me that he heard a GT3 "Cup" exhaust at the track that was insanely loud.
I would recommend trying the Fabspeed route and spend a whole lot less or even try the GHL route and spend even less $$. The owner is offering some great deals on exhaust systems to Rennlist members. All in all, I think you'll gain a lot less than the 25hp claimed. With exhaust, headers, sport cats and ECU upgrades, a lot of dealers/mfg. claim around a 30-35 hp gain. I don't really expect that, although I am planning on all of the above.
<edit> perhaps the GT3 cup exhaust is ordered for a stock 996 that comes with different headers? I was told it would fit - perhaps the headers alone are different... <edit>
