Suspected cause
There are a few gents on the 993 board who don't hold the 996 in very high esteem (and, there are probably a few 996'ers that don't like the 993).

Suggestion
I see "oil changing" posts on the 996 and later boards, and thats basically unspoken and assumed in the prior models.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Posted on "water and 996" thread in 993 forum. Hmmm, I guess we can take up a collection to buy her some glasses because I can't even imagine someone seeing a similarity.
And some guy accused this board of bashing 993's!!!??? Go figure.
Don't stir this pot.
There are a few gents on the 993 board who don't hold the 996 in very high esteem (and, there are probably a few 996'ers that don't like the 993).
However, there are plenty of "aircooled" guys that like the 996. Most of those guys (in the thread) are just expressing preferences. It should not be a surprise to anyone that if you ask people what they prefer on the 993 board the lions share will prefer the 993 and if you ask over here most will prefer the 996.
I think the 993 is a great Porsche, but I'm not going to trade my 996 for one. I suspect that most 993 owners feel the same way about trading for a 996.
Many people (normally women, but a large portion of men) do not specifically or singularily identify auto-shapes as well as "we" do - us crazy enthusiasts. They see no real difference between a 944 and a 928, or a F 348 and Datsun, for that matter.
I have trained my wife otherwise, but many people I know do not distinguish these shapes. I can't tell a Picasso from a (insert something also line-drawn and impressionist).
I do see your point, Brendan. I guess I was looking at it as a ploy to take an indirect jab at the much maligned 996, like "my friend says "yada yada yada."" My philosophy is be direct: If you want to take a jab, do it yourself. I myself like all P-cars (and Picassos).
Even with intense instruction my wife can only now tell a 911 from other cars - we have neighbors with 997S and 964 and to her they all look alike - all 911s. But then she thinks Boxsters are "cuter" than 911's so what do I know? But, paradoxically, she can distinguish a genuine Hermes purse from a knock-off at 100 yards. Now THAT is a useful skill *_*
Didn't someone on this board once relate that after he got out of his car a good looking woman commented on how much she liked his Camero (after reading, or trying to read, "Carrera" on the rear of the car)?
No, you got the wrong picture, discogonya. That first one is a 993!!
Seriously, I just came from looking through the 993 board. There's a lot of 996 bashing going on in there. Recently, there have been two threads here at the 996 board that could easily have turned into a 993 bashing spree. Instead, the posts has just been laughed off and made into a big joke. That speaks a lot about the people of this board, owners of a 996, and of the car. We are secure in the knowledge that the 996 is an excellent car.
Wonder what all that 996 bashing over at the 993 board says about the 993 owners and their cars
?
I don't know discoganya...now that you put them side by side and in the same color...they look very much alike!!!
I see windshields, round wheels, headlight, grils, doorhandels, side mirrors......OOOHHH they both fall in the category: automobile!!!
I love the camero (carrera) remark!!!
She didn't say "identical twins," she said "looks like." She did not "mistake a 911 for a Taurus." Yes, even the "stupidest of people" can tell them apart. Only an even more stupid person doesn't understand the concept of "looks like." I've known "car guys" who mistook a 356 for a Bug or a Speedster for a Ghia.
She didn't do that.
She was making a comparison, not mistaking one for the other.
As far as being direct, I find it presumptuous of you that you assume you know my intent. Yes, I could easily use my wife's statement as a jab against the 996 (it is a good one, isn't it?
). I guess you'll have to trust me when I say it was posted in a friendly, elbow-poke kind of way. (Should have put in a
for the sensitive types.) I happen to prefer the 993 over the 996, for a number of "reasons," most of which come down to personal preference and don't need to be reiterated here. I have the deepest respect for all Porsche
enthusiasts
, regardless of model. If you're driving around the Bay Area and see a metallic black 993 flash its headlights at you, it might just be me.
Doonesbury, however, I have no respect for.
C'mon, Bruce. Don't be so sensitive. The cracks about you and your wife and your car were said in a friendly elbow-poke kind of a way. Lighten up. Doonesbury hasn't said anything to lose respect for.
I've never been on the 993 site...is it scary over there? Sounds like those fellers are mean (and I owned 2 air cooled beauties). I'll just stay here...in my happy spot!
I know it's tongue in cheek, Statman, but I don't think 993 owners are mean. It's just a different demographic at the present time, I think. Let me elaborate on my opinion.
The 993 MY ranged from 1994 to 1998, and the base coupe currently ranges in price from $17K to $27K private party sale (Edmunds values). The 996 MY ranged from 1999 to 2004, and the base coupe currently fetches $29K to $51K private party sale. Yes, contrary to popular myth, the base 1999 996 fetches more money than the base 1998 993. Based on costs, the 993 owners as a whole are probably a younger less affluent group than the 996 population as a whole. I know generalizations are always dangerous, but I think that means you will find more 993 owners that are young and immature and have something to prove, whereas you will find more 996 owners who are mature and more secure in their position in life. That, I empasize, is just an opinion. An opinion based on costs and possible demographics, to explain the readily apparent discrepancy in how 996 owners don't bash 993 cars as often or as vitreolic as the 993 owners will bash 996 cars.
So Palting...you are calling me an old fat bold Porsche driver..in his 40'ts???
Well you are right except for the bold part...still got all my hair!!
As for the 993's...love them from the outside...nicest P's ever made...but the inside....NAHHHHH...dated!
The 993 people are the last tail end of the true porschphiles that will stand with thier car through whatever issues it has. They are rabid - like the 928 crowd, the 944 people (you want to talk about young), and of course the 964 and prior people.
996/986 and post are.... You guys. People who may or may not have owned prior Porsches. Its a side-stepped purchase from what could many times have been a BMW M3, or a whatever-the-flavor. There is no where near the rabid fixation as ther eis with the earlier cars.
The same bell curve can be used with the maintenance. 993 people are the last, as a generalization, to work on thier cars. I see "oil changing" posts on the 996 and later boards, and thats basically unspoken and assumed in the prior models.
I change the oil on my 928. I DON'T on my honda. I think thats same relationship goes for the new Porsches.
I think its dissapointing, and congruent with the warantee and abuse-denials that are happening with Porsche right now. They built them differently.
As someone who purchased his first 911 in 1969, I have an appreciation for air cooled engines, dry sump, and no frills interior. However, I fully understannd that unless Porsche was able to broaden its appeal to a wider market, there may not have been an independent Porsche. So as far as I'm concerned Porsche now has a broad spectrum of offerings that caters not only to the hard core track enthusiasts, but also to a much greater market that has no intention of ever tracking their cars. The 996 or 997 is a great sports car that can easily be used as a daily driver, and the GT3 is available for those who want an uncompromising sports car at a relatively reasonable price. To suggest that the 993 is superior to the 996 or 997 is ridiculous.
LOL...you are too funny! Dream on...get real....please!
Find me a 993 at $17k or even at $27K that is worth buying ... I'll buy 3 in a heart beat at those prices.
Heh-heh-heh. I just checked on the thread at the 993 board. Poor guy just asked about the 996, stating that his wife liked it. He was called a spineless mindless cuckold who would do anything his wife said.. That's what I mean about immature. He finally just closed the thread.
I agree that that book values don't mean a lot, just993, but they do provde a decent snapshot. Autotrader, however, simply lists the asking price, so it gives a snapshot of what the PO's think their car is worth. What it actually sells for is what the car is truly worth. On that, Edmunds gives a better snapshot, since they base their values on actual sold prices of all comers.
Yeah, that seems like it's really on the low end. I've had a hard on for a 993tt or 993C4S for a while now, if they were anywhere near those prices I'd have one of each.
You know I think it's funny, it was the 993 air cooled guys against the younger brother, the 996. But you know what? A new kid was born so why don't we all go over to the 997 forum and start given them wedgies?
Rob
LOL...I wouldn't want to get them all bent out of shape..besides they have enough to stress about with NAV, PSM, PASM, Sport Chrono, Cocoa interiors and X51 upgrades.
Heh-heh-heh. Been lurking there occasionally. I thought the 996 board was too much into those, but the 997 guys take it to new levels. Should be fun, though, just to see what their reaction would be like
.

Hey Palting!!!..are you a news reporter for World News Tonight
Now, see? What'd I tell you? That was such a great retort you made earlier. This last one is just being nasty.
This one is just inane.
Now you've got me doing it. I'm outa here.
You guys (sptschoice and Another) are being putzes. Why don't you go out on this very nice day and drive your friggin' cars. Isn't that ultimately what all this smack talk is about? I'm quite sure Palting actually drives his car.
I have read "somewhere" that ALL Porsche 911 drivers ( no matter what year) are ALL OLD (in their mid to late 40's), FAT and mostly BALD.
Now 993,996,997 got to say for that????
There are lots of reasons to prefer the 996.....
The 996
- is Lighter (than the 964 & 993)
- has More HP
- has More Torque
- is More Rigid
- has a stronger Chassis
- Accelerates more quickly
- Has a higher top speed
- Brakes more quickly
- Pulls more G's on a skidpad
- Slaloms Faster
- Autocrosses more quickly
- is quicker on a road course
- is quicker around the "Ring" (the ultimate road course)
- looks better (my opinion)
- is safer in a crash
- Sold in higher numbers (more popular)
- is more comforable
- has a better interior
- has won almost unanimous aclaim from the Automotive press worldwide
- is less maintenance intensive
........than the 911's before it (Turbo vs. Turbo, N.A. vs. N.A.)
However, don't let that disuade you from purchasing a 993. According to some, they utilize higher quality plastics on the interior.
Interesting. I live in a historic district and many historic home owners look down on those who buy some of the few newer townhouses that are available. Pride, in some people, apparently translates into condecension.
Frankly, as mentioned by other posters, most 996 owners have great respect for predecessor models but elected to buy the 996. I could have easily purchased a 993 but am not handy with engine mechanics and wanted a GENERALLY less maintenance-intensive (and safer, for the commute) car.
I have 2 911 owner neighbors - 964 and 993 (993 recently traded for 997S). Both the 993 and 964 were in the shop frequently - 964 for 1 1/2 month once - and they were not even daily drivers. May not be statistically accurate sampling, but their experiences affected my decision.
In short, it does SEEM that more air-cooled guys look down on their 996 brethern than vice versa - the respect does not seem to be mutual. That is something I just don't get. All models have pluses and minuses (even the 993!).
So, now I gotta go out and wash my 996/taurus, that is, if I can distinguish it from the wife's camry. Would not want to accidently wash her car *_*.
I own both a 964 and a 996. Completely different cars and I love both of them for totally different reasons which I am not going to get into and stir the waters any more.
Let me just say that when I recently bought my 996 my 964 side did not look down on me...
he just shruged and went on. Now my 996 side is a little more problematic...I may have to work on him
I don't care what other people thin the cars I drive look like. I drive them for me, not for anyone else, or for what they may think of them. If you look down on 996s, you probably haven't driven them enough or you simply prefer something else more. In either case, who cares . . . I know I don't . . .
I have a 964 and could easly own a 996. I like the 996 but my decision to stay with what I have is its a weekend toy not because of finances. If I had a daily driver Pcar a 996 would be the one I would get. The 993 to me would only be a lateral move, except for the bigger butt, and not a move up to a more modern car. After all they are getting pretty old now. From what I have seen the prices people sell their 993's to each other on Rennlist is not necessarly the real world market price. A porsche is a porsche. I like them all for different reasons.
Wow, I go off club racing for a weekend and everything goes to hell. The funny thing is at the track nobody cares which hood you open to find the engine or whether you're cooling with water, oil or air. It's all about good competition and endless piles of fun driving all varieties of Porsches. I had a fantastic weekend mixing it up with a beautiful real euro 993 RSCS. Not only did we have a great time on the track but we had a great time in the paddock as well. Anyone that spends too much time defending their own model or bashing someone elses really needs to get a life.
