Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Then when you have the stalk to intermittent the dial will adjust for any speed you like.
Leading evidence: 'Adjust any speed you like' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust any speed you like' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I thnk your wipers are the same as the 928 version (check the relay - is it a 928.615.101.01?)

Can the timing on the intermittent wiper be changed (relay replacement, whatever)?

They were not listed as an option on the car when I bought it, but the delay seems to change based on the rain - regardless of the setting of the dial.

At its shortest interval setting (all the way to the right) the intermittent timing is longer than any of our MB's or BMW's at their longest interval setting.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am assuming that all 996 intermittents are like mine where the interval between swipes is so long, even at the highest speed setting, that its almost useless.
Can the timing on the intermittent wiper be changed (relay replacement, whatever)?
With the amount of rain we get in Florida, it would certainly be nice to have an intermittent feature that was effective.
Yup, it s a pain. Don't have any answers for you, but I wanted o chime in and agree with you that the intermiottent wiper delay at the fastest speed is stil too long.
Yes its too long. At its shortest interval setting (all the way to the right) the intermittent timing is longer than any of our MB's or BMW's at their longest interval setting. Its pretty useless.
I never understood why they don't have the interval from slow to as fast as possible. Then when you have the stalk to intermittent the dial will adjust for any speed you like.
I've always had a problem with the wipers themselves. They seem way too light and tend to stutter or skip at times. This is less of a problem with my 2004, but my 2001 was miserable.
Guys,
I was doing a search for an old post and saw several similar threads on this topic for other models... I thnk your wipers are the same as the 928 version (check the relay - is it a 928.615.101.01?)
In any case I'd suspect even if it has been updated this will still work on a 996/986 also....

VW digital programmable intermittent relay is about $35 from internet parts places... rain sensor would also be nice, but assume there are some installation issues to handle (windshield sensor etc?)...

How can you tell if you have the rain-sensing wipers? They were not listed as an option on the car when I bought it, but the delay seems to change based on the rain - regardless of the setting of the dial.
No, they don't automatically - but neither did the ones on my MINI. You had to select the intermittent setting, and then it would wipe or not wipe based on rain. The 996 is similar - there's the fast/slow setting (up on the stalk) and intermittent (down on the stalk). When its on intermitten, the dial seems to control frequency somewhat, but on the slowest setting it sometimes wipes once/20 sec or so and sometimes once/2-3 seconds if the rain is heavier.
Its weird.
My wife has the rain sensor on her Lexus. God I hate that feature, first off it scares the bejeezus out of me half the time and second I don't always want the wipers on. Especially if it's nice out, and you just had the car cleaned, and you go under an overpass and water drips on the windshield, the friggin wipers go on...arrrrgggg.
