that is probably a huge factor as to why the sl65 and the camaro took off so quickly vs the porsche..

if you checked into the suspension setup on the sl65, you would see it's very comparable, if not superior to most any high performance sports car out there on the market today..

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Some nice vids of some crazy fast heavily modded twin turbo/997 SCed porsche races.. one against a 4500lb SL65... only mods on the SL65 are renntech ecu and airbox.. guess which marque hits the mid 10s in the 1/4? http://media.putfile.com/Mercedes-Po...--Sunday-Drags obviously some guys with fast money and faster cars.. BobPorsche996 / BobSL55 / Bob740iL :>

POST 2Original post

There's some guy with a Chevy Astro mini-van that runs in the 10s. He didn't have to spend all that much money to make it go that fast, either. I'd still rather have my good ole 996 than a 10sec Mercedes anyday. Speed isn't so impressive since anyone can make their car go fast in a straight line.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

if you are trying to imply that the sl65 is comparable to an astrovan and can only go in a straight line due to it's ECU and airbox upgrade, then you obviously haven't checked out the sl65 suspension stats... if you checked into the suspension setup on the sl65, you would see it's very comparable, if not superior to most any high performance sports car out there on the market today.. even though it's not a true sportscar of course.. more GT like than anything.... and can hang on a circle track with most any vehicle in it's price range.. but it's suspension is not setup like a camaro or astrovan if that's what you are implying... regardless, just thought they were interesting races.. haven't seen many fast low 11 second porsches run before.. in terms of having both cars, everyone has a preference.. the owner of the benz also owns the porsche as well, (as well as a carerra GT. the bastard.. ) so he's obviously not biased.. he loves both marques, as i have both as well.. (although not even close to as nice as his ) he just did what he could to bring out the full potential possible in both of his vehicles and those are the results..

POST 4Original post

1.After watching the video, it seemed as though the Porsche was not getting very good starts (almost like he wanted to preserve his clutch or not do any damage to the engine). It did not seem like he pushed the car to its full potential. Even his times were different in every race. 2. It would also be interesting to see what would happen if the cars were cruising at about 120 then see who pulls away the fastest.

POST 5Original post

Yeah - noticed that too. Very bad starts for the Porsche. Especially the first race, where he stutters to a start. But great cars - all of them

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

well one must realize the porsche had 750lb of torque vs the benz which had 980lb of torque.. that extra 230lb of torque isn't a small number.. also the sl65 and camaro both had drag radials.. that is probably a huge factor as to why the sl65 and the camaro took off so quickly vs the porsche..

POST 7Original post

Just think, if you hadn't wasted all your money on the Porsche engine, your SL55 could be a SL65. Then however, we wouldn't have been so lucky as to have you on this board, would we.

POST 8Original post

The Porsche's lauches were horible.. If he could hook up he'd do .2 better easily. But Porsches at the 1/4 is taboo. 120 mph pull away, where could this ever happen, not at a roadcourse. Race what you brung the SL handed that Porsche it's ***.

POST 9Original post

Since we are on the topic of drag racing.... Here's a proper launch on a EVOMS TT. SL65 what? 10.3 seconds at 139mph http://media.putfile.com/EVOMS-1037

POST 10Original post

Bob, I drove my B.I.L's S600 with AMG package (It says amg on the motor and had the rims and it say's amg on the rear and has V12 on the side), it may not be a sl65 but I was surprised with the drive. It was extremely powerful, very fast and stable on straight line acceleration, I did not push it hard on the corners as my wife was with me but at moderate speeds cornering seems to be good for a sedan but his bmw 745il corners better. The steering feedback is the WORST of any vehicle I've ever driven,...YES it includes the sienna and the honda vans, a few lexus a chevette and a tercel. It was freakingly unbelievable, totally numbing steering response, I would put it a notch above my x-box gaming controle. Do you think it's because it's a s600, or could something be broken. I told him I'll pick the less powerful ugly 745il over the s600 amg any time. Jeeva

POST 11Original post

The driver of the Porsche couldn't get off the line, at least that's what it looked like in the video.

POST 12Original post

I'm not a drag racer but, dispite the bad starts by the pcar doesn't the 133 mph by the pcar indicate that the car was going faster at the end?

POST 14Original post

Are you asking if the Porsche would have eventually passed if it were a mile race?

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

if you want to make a comparison like that, i think it would only be fair to compare the cayenne S to the 996 TT on a race track.. a non-amg 4 door benz sedan is completely different than an AMG SL65.. one was built with 3 year old technology compared to the SL and suspension for 5 people driving comfortably and not for any high speed manuevering and one was built for high speed sports car handling... regardless, the S600 does NOT have any of the AMG suspension components.. nor is it built or even a close comparison to as the SL65.. they are completely different beasts.. from what i heard about the S65, it is ridiculous speed for a car not built for that engine.. it's a sedan that never ever had any intentions of a 604hp engine and 738lb of torque when developed in 1998 i'm pretty sure <g> they just decided to drop one in there, i suppose because they could... that 10.3 second porsche is nice.. especially considering it appears to be running on 18" drag radials? not bad at all :>

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i wouldn't want an SL65 thank you very much.. the torque and speed on them is ridiculous, especially for everyday driving.. i suppose for some it's nice, that have a huge stable of cars, but imho the sl65 is a complete waste of $60,000 extra.. (well atleast for anyone worth under 10 million)

POST 18Original post

Yes, it seems it showed me it had a slower start but faster top finishing speed.

POST 19Original post

Hey bob, I was'nt trying to imply the two cars to be the same, I don't know much about amg's, I was expecting performance in par with bmw-M division, I was dissapointed with the drive. But, now that you say that s600 amg was never designed for such power it makes total sense. I guess they are eager to slap the amg name for higher sales. I was surprised with the drive as I was expecting it to be a true amg car, but now I know why I was dissapointed with the dirve.

POST 20Original post

Both s-class cars (s600 and s65) are absolutely terrible cars for driver feel. The s600 in particular still has the recirculated ball steering which makes it feel as numb as driving a DeVille. Some of the other AMG models, however, are lots of fun to drive, and all possess mind-numbing aceleration. If you have to have a sedan you could do a lot worse than an e55 IMO. Not one benz steers like a Porsche or an m3, but I love them anyway for what they are
