Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had this problem for over a year, after I tried to change the faceplate, I must have pulled too hard on the needle, so the worm gear shaft got dislodged and the tacho was no longer working.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was taking on a winter project to change the color of my tachometer face. I went with an overlay. The instructions said to work it over/ around the tachometer needle. I should have just taken it off. It now moves freely and doesnt respond to input from the car. Does anyone have a repair shop they like?
its fixable!!
You most likely pulled the worm gear out of alignment inside the stepper gear. I know this because the same thing happened to me.
Youll just have to take it all apart again and reset that worm gear.be careful as the stepper motor casing is kind of a pain but youll see its out of its notch
Thanks, I’m sure that’s it. I took another shot at disassembling the unit, but got spooked as I got close to taking the clocks off the board. I found a shop in IL that seemed familiar with the problem. I figure $300 is cheaper than breaking more things on it.
Many thanks for this solution !
I had this problem for over a year, after I tried to change the faceplate, I must have pulled too hard on the needle, so the worm gear shaft got dislodged and the tacho was no longer working. Couldn't find anyone to repair, and a new one costs about 3 legs, so it took me a while before I found this thread and before convincing myself to try fixing it myself.
It's a bit tedious to take things apart, especially opening the little stepper motor. Once open, I could confirm the worm gear was dislodged, so I put some petroleum jelly on the shaft to keep it sticking in the right spot when assembling (and to lubricate the shaft), all put back together, put the needle in the right spot, and bingo, works !
By the way : this little stepper motor is used in BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, etc, you can find them anywhere between 1.67 EUR to 40 EUR, it is a so called Minitools
