Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

You'll want to know the last time the engine and tranny oils were changed, brakes flushed, coolant flushed and water pump changed out, serpentine belt replaced, plugs changed, intake air filter replaced, last alignment done, pollen filter swapped (if you're really worried about pollen).
Replace every 6 months($100+), and about $500-1000 every year

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am thinking about buying a 2001 cabriolet with 80k miles on it with a manual transmission. Of course I would prefer to go with lower miles, but most of the ones in my area and budget have about this many miles on them. Am I asking for issues? I plan on keeping it for a while, and I am someone who could care less about miles as long as it runs and looks good. I bought an 04 Cayenne S 2 years ago with similar miles and it is at 105K now and has been trouble free. I am just thinking about any long term issues that may arise.
Have you done a search here about the maintenance the 996's require? Parts are relatively standard as far as price and easy to come by; it's the labor that can be costly, ESP. If the engine and/or transmission has to come out. Do you have a knowledgeable Pcar indi that can steer you in the right direction as far as what to look for in a 996 Cab?
Remember, these cars are 10+ years old, so if they haven't been maintained well, or major services haven't been done, you may be in for $$ shock when **** starts to break.
A thorough PPI with DME readout and maintenance history on the car your looking at would be a good start. Carfax isn't always a sure thing, esp. If an accident wasn't reported.
Check for leaks , wet areas and a good test drive to get a feel for the car. Condition of tires and ALL fluids , brakes and suspension components.
If the Cab top is in good shape and mechanically 100%, that's a good sign also. IMO, a Cab needs a bit more TLC to keep it in good shape vs a coupe.
For a weekend driver or a DD, Cost-wise, typical oil change every 6 months($100+), and about $500-1000 every year for incidentals, i.e. brake flush, tires, alignment, emergency funds. If you track, Auto-X, DE, costs are higher.
I will assume that you will get a PPI done on any 996 you buy, so I'll spare you all the "watch out for this or that". You're probably familiar with the IMS and RMS issues with any M96-engined Porsche, so again I'll spare you. (If not, Search and ye shall find.)
As for having 80,000 miles, that, to me, is just about right. It's a 12-year-old car so it's still been driven lightly. I am not a fan of super-low-mileage garage queens. A car that's only been driven 2,000 miles each year is going to have all sorts of potential issues. Seals dry out, gaskets do the same, condensation and rust inside the engine can lead to gunk, gasoline can become varnish, and so on. Cars that mostly sit around scare me.
So, other than the standard gremlins with any 996, I wouldn't let age-appropriate miles scare you at all. You'll want to know the last time the engine and tranny oils were changed, brakes flushed, coolant flushed and water pump changed out, serpentine belt replaced, plugs changed, intake air filter replaced, last alignment done, pollen filter swapped (if you're really worried about pollen).
Good luck!
Make sure the hard top comes with it. Then you wont have to leave it standing during the winter months. Saves wear and tear on the soft top anyway plus all other working parts of the car. If maintenance records are not with the car, I would change out all which Peterbigblock mentioned in his last paragraph. I think that is good policy anyway especially if you are a diy man. The draft excluder behind the drivers head is another good additive with the cabrio. On a colder day this can be pulled up into position as you sit in the drivers seat. Then raise the side front windows and its amazing how much draft it eliminates.
