Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Currently I live in a state that doesnt have emissions inspections but will likely be moving to a state that does here in the next few months. I dont have cats AND I have a tune (FVD). Ive had cars before that didnt have cats and theyd BARELY pass emissions, even had a deleted diesel Sprinter that still passed emissions somehow. Will the 996 pass without the cats or do I need to keep my car registered here until I find a place that does inspections for the decal?

POST 2Original post

I thought all cars 1996 and newer only got plugged into the computer and 1995 and older had the sniffer stuck up the tail pipe, that's how it's is in NY anyways unless something has changed or I am misremembering something which is very possible. Do some states test emissions out of the tail pipe for obd2 cars, if so that sucks? I didn't run cats on my GTI for many years but my APR tune would hide the check engine light for cats so my car always passed. I never failed a visual, the techs never cared or maybe they thought the resonators were cats, I never questioned it lol

POST 3Original post

Quotes source posts: 19239093, 19239123

Not sure why where you're moving is classified. Every state is different but you would fail in California just on the visual before you even got hooked up to the computer. If by "does inspections for the decal", you mean a place where you give them a wad of cash and *wink*wink* you pass smog, they are long gone here. All the fraud is done at the DMV level now. Here it's '99 and older that get the sniffer but as I mentioned every state is different. There are actually a handful of counties in California that require no smog testing at all.

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 19239142

Ah gotcha, thanks for the clarification. Really depends on location I see.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19239142

Theres nothing classified, I just dont know which state Im moving to in New England yet, its either MD, CT, NY, PA, DE, RI, or MA. So my 40 AE would just get hooked up to the OBD2 port? What info are they getting from there? Its been awhile since Ive lived in a state that does emissions, so pardon the ignorance

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 19239173

Here, yes, your car would not have to go on the dyno with the sniffer but I don't know about any other states. AFAIK, the computer is just looking for any outstanding codes. It's relatively recently that I've owned cars newer than '99 so I'm no expert though.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 19239173

In NY they will hook it up to the obd2 port and check for readiness monitors, and 4 or 5 have to pass I can't remember exactly, also no check engine light obviously, not sure what else the computer see's. They will also do a visual for cats and safety stuff, my GTI always passed the visual but not sure if it was lazy techs or they just didn't know what to look for since I had a resonator.

POST 8Original post

MA is OBD2 and safety only. No emission codes and you're good.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 19239186

Doh! Yes, the readiness monitors. If the battery was disconnected for any reason, you have to complete a 'drive cycle' to reset the readiness monitors which is a PITA. I don't think it's the same for every manufacturer, this is for BMW. It's almost impossible to do without breaking a bunch of traffic laws. I've done it early on Sunday mornings when traffic is light.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19239186

What are the odds they would know if the car has an XPipe without cats and be like yoyou have no cats. Pretty common to have an idea of where they are on a regular car, but not on a 911or so I would think.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 19239277

It probably depends solely on the individual tech and location, a chain is going to be more strict then the small mom and pop shop I use for inspections. I agree I think they would have less knowledge on a 911 on what to look for then a normal front engine car. Half the time they don't even know what to look for on a normal car, the cats are in the header on my e46 M3 and they didn't see them, still passed the car and asked me on the way out if the car had cats lol, some places are more relaxed then other for sure.

POST 12Original post

Delaware has a state inspection at a dmv, not a mechanic shop. Every 2 years u have to renew. They do a "safety" lights, horn, wipers and tire depth.. They also plug in the obd2 and look for faults and readiness for cars newer then '95. For cars up ro 2000 u r allowed 2 unset readinesses, for cars 2001 and newer only 1 unset. This now applies to all diesels 2008 and newer up to 15k lbs. The issue is the readiness. Most delete programs just turn off readiness so the stay unset. Can u pass? Maybe. U can always put cats back on it evey 2 years and put the tune back to stock for the renwal.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 19239304, 19239368

Thats how I figured it was. I also assumed it was like get in good with a bunch of the locals and ask them where they get their cars inspected to get a decal. ah, ok, I was wondering what it was theyre looking for in the OBD port. Can they tell the difference between unset and deleted or are they just checking to make sure theres no codes? Thanks everybody for the education, Im just trying to get my ducks in a row for when I move in a few months. If youre wondering why I dont know which state Im moving to, the wife applied to a bunch of PhD programs in that region. She got her masters at Johns Hopkins, so were thinking its more than likely going to be Maryland, but Im just wanting to get ahead of everything in case she chooses somewhere else or god forbid doesnt get into Hopkins. Being that her Macan Turbo is also deleted/tuned, adding cats back on, especially on her car, isnt really feasible. Any more input and responses is welcomed and appreciated!

POST 14Original post

To my knowledge for both diesel and gas cars the tuners do not delete the readiness. They just dont look for the conditions to test for the readiness. This keeps it in a "not ready" status thus not throwing a code. Most simple code readers will show all of this so plug your cars in and check. MD does have emissions and inspections in some counties but not sure how its done.

POST 15Original post

In CT, emissions is required for 25 years old and younger. It's an OBD test. If there are not stored codes and you have 7 of 8 readiness codes set, you are good to go.

POST 16Original post

Here, we just have a safety inspection (Canada) but they can fail you on CEL. I just turned off the code with a handheld reader, brought it in, and they passed it. No cats. Thank goodness for the glory that is Texas North (Alberta).

POST 17Original post

This can give you an idea what is required to pass in NY.

POST 18Original post

Ditto what 4Driver4 says about CT. They don't look at anything except the computer screen after they plug into the OBD port. We also have a very active PCA organization with events nearly every weekend, year round. I'll be rooting for Yale for your wife. Just be aware that you don't want to actually live in New Haven if you have any choice.

POST 19Original post

I work in Maryland, car isn't registered here, but witnessing some of the cars on the road, they need to be inspected. From what I have heard, you only have to have it inspected when you move here or when you buy. I'm not sure what they look for when they inspect but seems to be a one-time deal in southern Maryland anyway. My car is registered in Virginia, way outside of the beltway and I have an annual inspection, but it's all safety, no smog.

POST 20Original post

It's wild how different the laws are state to state, in NY we have to jump through hoops every year and the brief time I lived in FL all they did was look at the car at the DMV for 1 min and I believe you never have to get it inspected again, that was 10 or 15 years ago maybe it's changed. My friends in California with M3's have to swap the tune to stock & carbon air boxes for stock intake every inspection. At the end with my GTI I just put cats on it cause it was getting annoying, I got kicked out of a Midas trying to get an exhaust hanger welded back on and they freaked cause I had no cats, I wasn't even there for an inspection lol. No sweat though I just took it to a Meineke and they welded it.

POST 21Original post

hah, yeah, Yale is one of the schools she applied to. Im not sure we could afford to live in New Haven if we wanted to. All the houses with garages are $500k+. Renting may as well be a $500k mortgage. I used to work in Groton (I was a submariner) and I looked out there just for the sake of price and familiarity, but ****ing hell even rotten Groton has gotten expensive. CT in general is bananas. I dunno how my niece and her fianc survive up there Any recommendations if she chooses Yale on where to actually live? Were not really caring if its an apartment or a house, prefer a house to buy, but definitely dont want on street parking. Yeah, Florida has no inspections, the DMV doesnt even give a ****. You show up, pay your decal fee and keep on with your day. SC is much the same way.
