Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I've spent a bit of time looking at the SAI problem, but can't find a cleaning diy.
Leading evidence: 'Clean diy' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean diy' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

When it finally does go out or start making unbearable noises, is there any reason why one couldn't disconnect the electrical plug on the front and run the car until they get a new one?

Apparently not too hard to replace DIY, although I didn't do it before my 996 left me.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Sounds like a jet and lasts 30 - 45 seconds then stops. It's coming from the engine compartment, maybe just behind me. Any ideas what the heck it is? 99, 6 spped, 50K miles
Thanks
Jato assist?
Most likely Secondary Air Injection pump. SAI comes on at cold start to help light up the cats. Do a search you have options.
You can clean it if you are handy.
You can buy a new Porsche branded Bosch unit for ~$1100.
You can buy a Bosch unit for ~ $300.
You can ignore it until you get CEL. Then you will have to do one of the above and reset your CEL.
Does it sound like a vacuum cleaner? I just got my 99 C2 and have a noise similar to a vacuum cleaner that lasts 30 to 45 seconds. I assumed it was normal - seems like a big mistake on my part.
That's the noise. I noticed today that it stopped after 30 seconds or so, then started back for 3 or 4, then stopped comletely. I've spent a bit of time looking at the SAI problem, but can't find a cleaning diy.
Sound like this?

Likely SAI. Bosch has it for about $600. Apparently not too hard to replace DIY, although I didn't do it before my 996 left me.
If it just sounds like a vacuum cleaner it may be normal. When it starts to sound like an angry vacuum on steroids then it's time to clean it. If it sounds like an angry skill saw cutting sheet metal. it's really time to do some remedial work
Hmm now I'm confused. Is there any way to know for sure? Mine sounds like a vacuum cleaner and not a saw or metal grinding but if something is wrong, I would like to fix it. The car passed PPI before I bought it last month so maybe I'm worrying over nothing.
If it sounds like a hand-held vacuum cleaner, it's about right and it's normal. Note it may kick in at other times (~5s each time) usually when the car is not fully warmed up yet when you're in stop and go traffic and the outside temp is low.
mine is acting up also. I occassionally get a loud electrical whine from mine, in addition to just being noisier in general sometimes. When it finally does go out or start making unbearable noises, is there any reason why one couldn't disconnect the electrical plug on the front and run the car until they get a new one?
The pump is intended to add air to the exhaust to combine with the extra fuel the ECU adds and these together burn and heat up the converters quicker.
This cuts down on the time the ECU runs open loop and the time the engine receives this extra load of fuel. An ECU that is running in closed loop fuels an engine better, cleaner.
So with the SAI pump disabled the engine runs open loop longer and runs richer for nothing.
I'm not sure what the extra fuel sans the extra air would do but there is the risk of possible damage the converters. You think a SAI pump is expensive, price a couple of new converters.
Get the thing fixed and quit worrying.
After everyone chiming in, mine may be normal. It's higher pitched in the cabin than outsiide. Doesn't sound like a bearing going south, but more like a Hoover.
