I replaced Bilstein B6s w/ H&R lowering springs installed by previous owner.

For comparison, I just had Ohlins R&Ts installed on my 04TT.

Suggestion
On the front you have to disconnect those parts anyway, so if they don't change them now, they're just going to double charge you the labor next time.

I was interested in the highly recommended Feals but my local shop talked me into the Ohlins.

Other things I wish I knew, I should have changed the control arms and anything with bushings at the same time.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I have a 996 w/ 85K miles on it. Suspension is tired and after having car up on the lift can confirm suspension is shot, riding on springs up front and bumpstops are corroding.
I got this quote, both seem wickedly high - but I realize its Porsche and thus; Porsche tax.
I'm leaning towards the H&R Coilover setup due to adjustabiilty but realistically I'll likely set/forget this as this is a street car and comfort is important to me.
The 2nd option quoted is OEM (B4 and re-using springs).
Is 4.8K crazy or does this seem about right? Located in Massachusetts.
4.8k seems a little high but I’m not sure how much H&R coilovers cost. For reference, I got a pair of Feal 441 long stroke coilovers (they come with top mounts) for ~$2k. I paid my alignment shop $1.9k for installation, corner balancing, 4 wheel alignment and installing inner and outer tie rods.
Seems fair with current market prices. You could get a quote for RoW M030 if you are looking for something slightly sportier than stock but not as aggressive as coilovers.
OP - Quote is reasonable. I would go with Feal coil option for two reasons: 1) good value play for quality. 2) Lots of RL peeps are on all types of 440/441 sets, so a lot of info on Feal reliability, set ups and component kit options. M030 cost will be way too high. A set of Koni’s with Eibach Pro springs will lower you (and your CG) nicely and be road and wallet friendly. The kicker is a good strut and shock combo will run about the same as Feals.
For comparison, I just had Ohlins R&Ts installed on my 04TT.
Coilovers - $4,545 + $275 tax
Install - $1,275
Alignment - $300
I replaced Bilstein B6s w/ H&R lowering springs installed by previous owner. The ride is fantastic..
I was interested in the highly recommended Feals but my local shop talked me into the Ohlins. He had a dozen GT3s, GT4s and Turbos in the shop that ALL had Ohlins in them. Zero regrets for spending the extra $$.
Best of luck.
I did Koni yellows with row m030 springs and all the supporting pieces that needed to be replaced.
$1400 for susp and whatever else for the other pieces. Did the install myself and alignment was $140.
I had a 100k mile cab and went stock B4s with new drop links. I drive the car very hard in canyons and the suspension is just fine. In retrospect I probably should have gone the B6 route as it it firmer. I am doing coilovers on my coupe 996 because i want to part time track it and full time canyon it. If you want to just use on street and want comfort, I would probably save some $$$ and go with B4s. They are comfortable, yeh, you can't make them super plush like a coilover, but do you really need that?
My shop charged $1500 in parts and $1500 in labor which included an alignment and a "corner balance". I'm doing my own suspension now, and I can tell you it's super easy and it did NOT take my indy the 10.5 hrs they quoted... It's a shop, and I don't begrudge them, but man, swapping the rear shocks literally took 30 mins per side.
Other things I wish I knew, I should have changed the control arms and anything with bushings at the same time. On the front you have to disconnect those parts anyway, so if they don't change them now, they're just going to double charge you the labor next time. If you hear any rattling up front going over little bumps, it's the control arm bushings.
To the OP, $4500 -$5000 for complete swap of all four corners is GOOD. Porsche suspension parts are crazy expensive, all the little parts add up, and then you need a real good alignment. You can save a little money by buying Bilstein but the little parts are still expensive. If you don't have good tools and decent suspension knowledge, leave this for the shop.
Do yourself a favor and A) get a second quote and B) ask the shop for pricing and labor breakdown. You can see from the pricing i shared up above you're priced way above mine for OEM.
It also doesn't indicate if that includes an alignment and a corner balance if you get coilovers.
I see they did list the alignment at the top of the quote.
For reference here are the parts they have for the OE B4 job. I just happen to have gone through this same thing when I was comparing Coil over vs standard for my new coupe. Not suggesting you do the work yourself, just a reference point of costs. $3000 for labor is a lot...
Its not hard to swap suspension or most of the other stuff on our cars...
I like to keep the money i'd pay on labour and spend it on other mods.
But learning about your ride and getting dirty is not for everyone, but its worth it if people would just try.
Yeh, I agree. I'm in the middle of swapping my suspension, but it did take some self confidence. I invested in a Quickjack for my other car, and it has quickly paid itself off in labor costs. But I'n lucky enough to have a dedcated garage to work in. I just wanted the OP to know that the time and materials costs for stock shock change is pretty low compared to his quote. Coilovers are more work (that's what I'm doing now) but not much much...
