Had my local guy check the OBD and no signs of RMS/IMS leaking but no way of knowing about the IMS for sure.

My mechanic is not that concerned with the IMS other than using a magnetic drain plug and always looking at the oil when replacing.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Glad it worked out for you, and this is the one thing that concerns me about 3.4L 2001 Cab.
I am considering purchasing this 2001 Cab with 18,000 miles from a local dealer. Ad from Autotrader:

Of course asking price is absurd. I am thinking $28K. Had my local guy check the OBD and no signs of RMS/IMS leaking but no way of knowing about the IMS for sure. Hard Top too much yellow and will look better with soft top up I think. Drove it home and the wife approves!
Just curious what others might say? Thanks.
Of course you got the whole low mileage "problem" there but putting that aside I would not pay more than $26k for it but that's me. I love the color but I just don't see paying $28k (or $37k for that matter) for an '01.
True.
I meant to say low mileage cars are the best!
Seriously though, I have always preferred low mileage cars and still do (even after my recent fiasco).
The asking price is ridiculous. I would say $29000 going off what I paid for mine last year. I would get my OWN ppi done and not the Dealers as they can inspect and throw a blind eye on things they don't want to divulge. (Trust me). I know. The upgrades are the same as mine apart from that one has better softer looking leather. The low milage scares me off unless I bought an extended warranty of about 3 years (30000 mile) which I did on mine. But I would walk unless he came under $30000. The color means nothing to me. The running parts do. It just happens to be yellow which I dont care for anyway. It's more suitable for a lady driver I think. He is banging the price up because it's low milage and yellow and both scare me off.
Well, I had IMS failure on my engine at 37,500 miles. However, could be due to engine work done by Porsche dealer. Unknown.
I agree the asking price is ridiculous. I disagree about the color. I never think of yellow like that as a woman's color. If anything a soft grey like mine is pretty uni-sex. I have driven an M3 that was yellow like that and it stands out. You need to be very comfortable with yourself and comfortable having attention paid on you. May be good attention and may be bad; it's a love it or hate it color. Yellow is my second favorite behind black for a car like this. However, getting back to the price it's beyond ridiculous and I probably wouldn't waste time as they are waiting for someone to fall in love and pay $32k or $33k.
I love Speed Yellow even after 9 years of ownership & daily display on LA freeways, but I agree with your bold quote above. If I were you I would send the seller several links to Turbo ads in that price range.
Dealer knows he is high but some buyers may not know any better so who can blame them. I did make an offer of $28,000 even with no fees other than VA 3.2% titling tax and tags. Conditioned on their removal of hard top and me taking to my shop for that PPI. $26,000 would be nice but not happening. Will keep you guys posted and thanks for the input.
No way this should be over $30k. $28k sounds right, particularly in speed yellow (which I like, but not sure I'd want every day). I remember seeing a 2000 coupe with 20k miles for sale this winter for $26k in NY, and a '01 coupe with 25k miles for $30k. Good luck getting a dealer to come down $10k though.
NADA puts clean retail at $35.8K with trade-in at $30.5. It gets a 10K bump for extra low mileage.
Since most dealers work off of NADA, you need to assume his cost is close to trade-in value.
If you really want the car, I would say that 32-34K would be a fair price.
Just saw your 15 page post about IMS. So much hate from HG Man! Seems like moderator helped some. You took it well and much of it was so uneccesary. Glad it worked out for you, and this is the one thing that concerns me about 3.4L 2001 Cab. Have a deal at $28,500 and not sure if I should bite!
Nice looking car!
Talking with a service manager the other day. He said the Cabs suffer a huge depreciation hit. Many new buyers pay a premium too then when it comes time to trade in/sell, oh the reality hit.
Bad new for the 1st owner. But good news for the 2nd or subsequent owner.
Sincerely,
Macster.
I imagine that Cab values are regional. In the sunbelt, the opposite is true. I could see where your service manager's opinion would be accurate in a colder, cloudier market.
I see both sides and could sleep well regardless. My mechanic is not that concerned with the IMS other than using a magnetic drain plug and always looking at the oil when replacing.
The 2002 X51 I just sold had it done so that was a big plus for me when buying and selling.
Of course, we could do the IMS replacement on this Cab which I would be likely to do anyway. Still I hated to see what happened to SacTown and that nice C4S.
In the SF bay area and east bay and inner valleys (and central valley too) while we do not have any many sunny days a year as you do in your area the weather in this area and vicinity is cab-friendly quite a few months of the year.
But I take the point you make. Regional differences in climate could affect one way or the other Cab depreciation.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Whew! My post made me nervous as I know my limitations and like most, would not care to be on the opposite side of a P-car discussion with the Macster! You may be the single most authoritative poster on this forum regarding all things Porsche!
