Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hopefully this thread will have far less drama, twists, and turns than my previous. Heading to the Bay Area this morning to pick up my car with it's new engine. Photos once I have it back home in SacTown!

POST 2Original post

Be very careful pulling out of the parking lot!

POST 3Original post

can't wait to see this new shinny piece of equipment

POST 4Original post

Wow, that didn't seem to take very long. Congrats and good luck!

I bet once you get past 100 miles you will finally take a breath huh! Good luck and keep us posted.

POST 6Original post

I'm glad that such a bad situation is getting resolved so quickly. Enjoy your new engine. Goodluck!

POST 7Original post

SacTownGuy, I hope I'm not out of line. But, what about the costs to you? To me that was part of the drama and intrigue.

POST 9Original post

I didn't see the resolution of the original thread. Are you paying out of pocket on this? I think you mentioned that the mechanic that did the PPI is covering the labor and you were handling parts...but I did realize it was a full engine replacement.

POST 10Original post

Awesome! Congrats, John. I'm so happy to hear that this took a positive turn for you in the end. I look forward to seeing the pictures. -Eric

POST 11Original post

I'm amazed at how quickly this was resolved...

POST 12Original post

Hey STG most important thing now is to break the engine in as per manual.. I know you will be tempted but go easy for a few thousand miles. Keep the revs under 4 thousand tops when going up the gears. Don't drop below 2 thousand I would guess so not to labor the engine. You know the score mate. Use them gears correctly and you should be home and (excuse the pun ) DRY. LOL. Glad they sorted you out in the end. What did it finally cost you? I guess around $7000.

POST 13Original post

OK... now we need some answers.... what happened?

POST 15Original post

Looking forward to the photos and the full final story. Hope your ride home is what it should be this time.

Cole's notes version is that Porsche North America is coughing up a new engine (perhaps remanufactured) and STG is paying the labour to have it installed by the Porsche dealership in order to have the peace of mind and two years warranty.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all. Made it home (130 miles or so) with no problems. Was nervous for about 50 but started feeling more comfortable after that. The dealer installed the engine for $4k. Porsche paid for the re-manufactured engine. It has a 2 year warranty. According to the service guy, at the dealer, "anything touching the motor is also covered by the 2 year warranty." Hopefully I never have to test that. I really appreciate all the positive thoughts. I'll get some real photos up tomorrow. Overall I am still very pleased and impressed with the guy that did the PPI (Marvin at the Renn Shop in Santa Clara) and overall the dealer (Carlsen in Redwood City) did a good job. In fact, other than charging high retail on the install Carlsen did a very good job. They diagnosed the problem quickly, got in touch with Porsche, ordered the engine, and installed it; all in 10 days. Again, most appreciate all the positive vibes here on RL! Oh ya, having a fun time driving but am keeping the rpms under control.

POST 19Original post

Excellent news and results, what a roller-coaster though!!

POST 20Original post

Your Porshe is up and running!!!! Thats great news. New engine in your Porshe

POST 21Original post

Glad it's all behind you, time to enjoy! Ouch! $4k for the install? FYI, I got a motor goodwilled from PNA in '06, original warranty expired in '02. It took some work, friends pulling for me at the dealership and jumping through some hoops. My total cost was under $1500 for labor and fluids.

POST 22Original post

All's well that ends well I think is how the saying goes. Personally I would have gladly paid an extra $4K for a car with a brand new reman installed, so from my perspective you're golden. With regards to your question in the other thread about the style of IMSB; my motor was replaced under warranty all the way back in 2005 and I recently verified that it has the later style 997 setup so it's almost certain that yours does as well, plus maybe even some other improvements by now (like a water pump with a metal impeller maybe ) Great car now that you're driving it though eh?

POST 23Original post

after reading this story I am thinking of bypassing my preventive IMS maintenance all together and simply buy a new extended warranty...hoping the IMS goes .. and here comes my new engine nice

POST 24Original post

Congrats on a happy resolution. One of the guys I work with, whom I had been pushing toward a Porsche for a while, bought a 2003 C2 within days of your purchase. I told him about Rennlist, and that very day he says: "Did you see this thread about this guy?" (you) We've been following the story, and he's really glad he got a 2 year powertrain service contract. Once again, so happy for you that it was resolved!

All in all a good deal. STG would have had to pay $2k for a 2 year ext warranty on an existing engine. For another $2k he gets a new engine and a good warranty. I'd do that any day.

POST 26Original post

Congratulations again! I am glad everything worked out for you.

Awesome awesome news - I had to pay 4 k and didn't get a new engine - BUT - I am going to be on Judge tv show in California in a couple of weeks - hoping that my story will end well 2. The Porsche is fun to drive at any speed - and I think your break in miles will go quickly - Do you go out to the garage and look it in the middle of night ;}
