Suggestion

I'm not sure my ADD would allow me to write down the mileage every time I used a valet, but I think I'd notice if I went and had a nice dinner and it was still at 180...good catch, I'd be PISSED.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

27 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I hate door ding. Currently she has perfect body and paint. But everywhere I parked, I keep worry about getting a ding except at work & home. It is better at valet or self parking to avoid ding ? Dansen

crap shoot. you can get it either way. i always self park - at least I get to choose the spot that way.

POST 5Original post

self park. choose your spot. why let somone else who you don't know drive your car?

POST 6Original post

Depends on the place. I love it when the car gets parked out in front of a nice hotel. Happened in Atlanta, Nashville, and DC. Tip the valets nicely up front and banter a bit and your car will be as safe as it can be.

POST 7Original post

What? You've never seen "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"?

POST 8Original post

Usually if you are a nice to a valet and tip - they will leave a pcar right upfront. I always note the mileage when i leave the car and return

POST 9Original post

I always prefer to self park, then tip the Valets for putting up with my selfish-ness.

POST 11Original post

Self Park...when possible. Went to a baseball game a few weeks ago. Great seats with valet parking. Tipped up front so they would take care of my car. As it turned out, I stayed for only 3 innings. Came out and through the window of the entrance, I could see my car parked near the front, but the brake lights were on. Walked over to the valet stand and presented my ticket. Got a nervous look and they quickly pulled my car up for me. I went to the back and the engine compartment was still hot. They explained that a spot opened up and they wanted the car up front. Temp gauge was at 180ish. Pretty sure they took it for a spin.

wow. good catch. free parking at the stadium for life?

POST 13Original post

I've had a couple of friends who were Valets in La Jolla, CA... based on their stories, I would NEVER Valet!

POST 14Original post

I'm not sure my ADD would allow me to write down the mileage every time I used a valet, but I think I'd notice if I went and had a nice dinner and it was still at 180...good catch, I'd be PISSED.

I figured that my situation is different than a restaurant where people are coming and going all night long. I am sure they figured they had a few hours with some captive cars. Never again.

Same here in LA & OC, this is why the business hires an outside company to do the valet "service" to limit liability. I usually boycott a business that doesn't have alternative parking!

POST 19Original post

I record my milage every time the car is started or turned off for maintenance records and to assist in the collection of other information, so I know exactly how many km's were put on my car. I have never had a problem with valet taking care of my car, and being in a valet lot, I fee much safer than with self park. I believe valets will take care of vehicles in their possession a little more than the average person, park properly etc. self park you have no clue who is parking beside you and how careful they are. Either way in the end it is just a car and I have insurance. That being said, about 7 years ago the doctor that lives behind me took his wife for a weekend to the Fairmont Banff Springs i their 2001 Porsche C4 Cabrio. The valet took it for a joy ride, rolled it doing close to 120mph wrote off the car and was permanently injured. The Fairmont chain opted to buy then a brand new 997 C4S cabrio to avoid going through insurance, and keeping them quiet to avoid bad publicity.

POST 20Original post

I worked with a guy who was once a valet, he made it quite clear - never give your car to a valet !

POST 21Original post

I do self park usually, but will valet. I always tip well up-front, and some guys will let you park your car in the valet lot if you tip.

POST 22Original post

I had to valet the other day and they let me park it myself and keep the keys after tip. Otherwise always self park.

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There was one time, this lady banged my MB's door while I was in it and quickly walked away. What am I supposed to do? ~sigh~ Wonder those Ferrari and Lambo valet or self park. Prob tip the valet $100 and keep the key

POST 24Original post

i've never let valet drive. usually i'll pull up curbside right at the front of the restaurant, 1 car length away from the valet booth, and park it there. Give the guy $15 (usually valet's are $5-10) and walk in with the key. The car is in front, ready when u leave, keys are with you.

POST 25Original post

Self-park. Handing the keys of an expensive-to-fix-anything car to a guy making minimum wage doesn't sound like a wise idea... and I hate door dings.

POST 26Original post

I don't see how I would trust a newer driver to drive a manual, period. That's what would primarily keep me from having it valet parked. Not that in my automatic Ferrari I have them park it either (see Ferris, above). Not that I have a Ferrari, but if I did, I'd park it myself. We've got a "fancy" restaurant close by that always has a collection of nicer cars up-front, where the valets don't touch them, and the owners self-park. Eye candy for the valets, good for the restaurant to demonstrate its "clientele" has good taste.

POST 27Original post

Valet have their place. I used them when I travel and have a rental car. I'd walk a mile before throwing the keys to my Jeep to a valet. Need I say more?
