POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

They want to race you at almost every traffic light. I am minding my own business, listening to some music, chatting with my spouse and here they come..revving the engines high I can hear them loud and clear. Light turns green and they are off like a bullet. The CEO has a chuckle when I step on the gas ever so slowly. They need to grow up..seriously.

POST 2Original post

I got that daily for the first month I owned my 996, but that has changed now since the turbo......... I too just took off easy and nodded my head.

POST 3Original post

Gotta admit though, that little V6 in the G35's and 350Z's sounds goooooood. C.

POST 6Original post

What's wrong with them? I guess they're enthusiasts that respect the car to a certain extent. I don't drive my 996 dangerously, but if I always drove it like a four-door sedan, I'd have...a four-door sedan.

POST 7Original post

I get that from the Audi A4 - S4 crowd in my area. Same thing, just slowly step on the gas and cruise. Porsche C4 is not a drag car. Let the kids be kids.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 4888310

Happens to everyone in any "fast" car, not just P's. Guys with wanna-be/poser cars are always streetlight racing - and they'll race anyone. Besides, with first gen 996's almost 10 years old now, and "new" 996's going on 4 years - modern tuner cars probably can keep up in the 0-60. Hell, if one of those "Handicap Only" buses accidentally over-revved the engine, I could see one of those 350Z's tearing him up! -td

POST 13Original post

This just happened to me 2 nights ago. Some kid in a POS old Integra thought I was racing him and raced up the street while I simply ignored him. It must have been the first time he's heard a bypassed exhaust.

how do you figure when a 996 can be had for the same price as a new evo/sti/s2000/350z and in some cases the "lesser" cars costing more? get off your high horses you don't drive a 997 GT3.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 4889373

I thought the original thread was for a G35 and Honda? I didn't see a evo,sti,s2000, or a 350z listed. Oh, and Ben I don't own a(high) horse or a GT3, nor was I inferring that my car cost more, but since you brought up price , even my 8 year old 996 when new was quite a bit more $, but that is irrelevent. Your reply seems off base but predictable and was not what I was thinking when I responded. You are entitled to your opinion nonetheless.

POST 20Original post

Hey Ben, read the last part of my reply again."At least in their eyes".

POST 21Original post

but what does recognizing a performance car and revving up the engine a bit have anything to do with whether they have to grow up or not and do you honestly think it's only honda and G35 drivers who have this very masculine desire to prove one's worth? you have more thing sin common with that annoying revving guyy than you think... that's all i'm trying to have others consider here. it's not like your from mars and that dude who revved is from venus. you both are from planet male ego. the venus/mars is you and the wifey . i sound harsh, but i'm really not in my tone, but of course it's tough since we're all just reading words and not all the other stuff. i drove a honda s2000 and that stuff happened to me as well, but hey, i don't judge them since they're likely a fan of your car.

POST 23Original post

I bought my early 2003 G. when they first came out. Having grown up with old school horsepower and not experienced the type of power now availible in the new cars. I can say I was surprised to find out how quick they really are. I was never lame enough to test a Porsche, Aston or the Prancing Horse, just to see if I could keep up. Its just bad form and tacky. I have to admit however the temptation to put the pedal to the metal is hard to keep in check some times. Who cares how fast you are from light to light? This senario was played out decades ago and generally results in an expensive ticket. A danger to other drivers if not the soccer mom and children in the Toyota Van pulling out from Mcdonalds. Idiots who have to show their *** on the public streets are not even worthy of the license they got out of their box of Cracker Jacks. Grow up, is right all right. I have never seen a Porsche owner entertain a fool and his lack of money.

POST 24Original post

I didn't say they had to grow up, you did. Your middle paragraph eludes me(thing sin??). I don't understand what you are trying to say(type).

POST 25Original post

My rant is not to you but the guys who want to race (you) I don't understand (thing sin?) reference. Sorry about type?

POST 26Original post

Hey Brew123, my reply was to Ben in a prior exchange above. . He stated 'thing sin', I was interested in what that might be.

POST 28Original post

Gotcha, things in, A little clearer now. Thanks Dresler.

POST 29Original post

Right on, I have to tell you all this. My wife and I like to eat at this place in Tampa called Berns Steak House. Its an old hangout for Tampa and expensive for the movers and shakers in the area. (were not) but we like a good meal and the people there. The fact of the matter is when you pull up to vallet park, all of the Porsches and high end cars are parked in a nice tidy line in front (o' so Bad). You have to take a deep breath when you see them. My wife said to me just a couple of weekends ago " is that he car your looking for?" It was a bad to the bone silver 996 with the areo. I said "yes" just as a new G pulled up that the vallet and promptly parked on the back lot with all the other non-dicript sedans and coupes. Ya, they want to race you, do they get to park up front under the awing at the best resturant in town?

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 4889517

Ben, I am sorry if I touched a raw nerve..or did I? You are mature than most on the street and it shows. No one has to prove anything except their own stupidity and hence my statement about "growing up" Why endanger the lives of others around you but doing these stupid tricks/acts. I quoted Hondas and G35s as I have only seen them doing what i saw. I don't see dudes in their Corollas or Saturn revving up their engines trying to impress and race you.

POST 32Original post

A Christmas poem for you: We had just eaten at the best restaurant in town. My buddy had the vallet pull his lame *** van around. While we pondered the the big fat check, the hotties came out to see what the heck. I piled in wearing my best new suit, As the brothers were looking at our riders tight boot. The G's and Hondas were parked in the back, tryin to sneak a peek at the high class back. Then the restaurant doors opened with such a swish, it was the owner of a 996. His car was brought to the head of the line, as you know his woman looked fine. He mounted his whip that looked just right and all the chicks exclaimed "out of sight." As he hit the gas and drove out of sight, he could be heard exclaiming "Merry Christmas to all and to all a cool night!"

POST 33Original post

I think it boils down to this - Porsches elicit emotional responses. Now, I have found that I often get very good attention; i.e. thumbs up , smiles , and people saying 'hey what kind of car is that,' but it doesn't rule out the bad attention; i.e. street racing, getting cut off, and the occasional vandalism . We all bought cars that stand out and shouldn't be surprised when we get attention. I tolerate the bad attention as the drive more than makes up for it. Besides, I'm sure there are plenty of people behind me who think I had it in for them when I went buzzing by them at twice the legal limit...

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 4889728

i don't get too touchy about stuff like this, it's really more like a being entertained type deal for me. the snobbery cracks me up. it's one thing if you're driving the cgt... else, just keep it real. i've seen plenty of idiots in more expensive cars and that's including porsche drivers that want to d!ck measure via their 911s. what is cool about 911 drivers in general here in the seattle area is that about 60% wave back and at a higher rate still if it's an older 911. i always wave. this is def not the case with the "lesser" rides.

POST 35Original post

They have a car that they are happy with and what they can afford. They see a Porsche, and think it would be fun to get them to race them a little bit. No big deal- as long as they don't cut me off or get too close, I can understand if they want to see/hear my car run through the gears. I don't think my car is too cool for school or makes me better than anyone else. I know people who trick out their cars- no matter what type of car it is - are just "car guys" and are driving what they can at the time, whether they are hondas, G35s, or Yugos.

POST 36Original post

That's funny . . .a friend who drives a 996 and I were having this same conversation last week. I live in Orange County, CA and G35's run rampant here. I just think it is entertaining when they taunt you and you burn them through a corner, round about, or windy section without even trying. With the amount of money some of those guys put into their cars they could have started with a P car if they were patient.

POST 37Original post

Timely thread.... Let me preface this by saying I owned a 2006 G35 sedan (C-package...nav...the works) for about a year. It was a great car and a great peformer so I have no issues with the G35 So anyway, I was coming home today in the 40th and was in the left turn lane. I had the feeling I was being stared at and looked beside me. Right next to me was a G35 coupe. The guy driving the car was staring at my car so hard I thought he was going to melt holes in it. I caught his eye and gave him a casual wave. Instead of waving back he darn near broke his neck turning his head away. When the light turned he punched it and flew out of there. I don't know if he was showing off or jealous. Either way it was silly.

POST 38Original post

Quotes source post: 4890184

I agree with El Torrente on that one. I drive a Tiptronic 1999 C2 Cab - about as basic and un-fast as Carreras come. Still, people recognize it and want to look at it and talk about it and drive near it. Car guys are car guys, whether they have slammed crapboxes or shiny F430s. Or even chrome wheels on their Porsche. Also, Ben, a lot of the country doesn't have the easy access to supercar sightings that lots of the west coast does, so in some places, any Porsche is a thing to behold.

POST 39Original post

Quotes source post: 4890184

+1 It's a form of respect--they're acknowledging that you have a nice car and that's one of the ways some (younger?) people show it. To be honest, it usually puts a smile on my face.

POST 40Original post

So my take on this is: whatever the other person is driving next to you, if it is a known fact that there car is not considered in the same league as a Porsche, doing any kind of hard acceleration etc., whether or not you do anything, is a chance for them to talk to there buddies about the Porsche they either blew the doors off at the light, because they didn't see you then you lost, or that Porsche drivers are chicken to race them. Basically they have nothing to lose but everything to gain around there peers. Hope that makes sense. So the question is...do you play there game or not ? I believe the answer to most Porsche owners is NO.

POST 41Original post

Probably their first taste of a "sports car".

POST 42Original post

I test drove a brand new G35 one time because I loved the way they looked before I got into Porsches. I drove about 1 mile and realized there is nothing special about the car, it drove just like any other Japanese car. Flat and cheap feeling, just like a Civic. I was very disappointed and took it right back to the dealer and walked away.

POST 43 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 4890669

No way. No games on public highways. In a controlled environment it can be a different ball game. Having said that, talking of prestige and the effect these cars have on people, this Saturday I had taken a friend of mine to the Tysons corner Honda as she wanted a Civic. Long story short, I park, we get out and the sales guy comes out and the first thing he says is "I will give you 5 Hondas for this". I just smiled and politely asked if we could see some black Civic Coupes. He chuckled and said he has never had anyone pull into the Honda parking lot in a Carrera. Anyho..carry on...

POST 44Original post

Quotes source post: 4890710

Huh? The *Infiniti* G35? I've driven five or six of them and found them to be extremely comparable to the BMW 3-series in everything but price (lower) and interior quality (a little lower). One vehicle the G35 bore absolutely no resemblance to? My '03 Honda Civic. Sorry, Tippy, but I'd be surprised if many people felt that way. It really WAS a home run for Nissan.

POST 45Original post

Quotes source post: 4890746

I am sorry, but to compare the driving dynamics of just about any BMW to a G35 is to me comical. BMW's drive awesome. The G35 has zero "nice" or "sporty" feeling to it. It feels just like your Civic. I love the looks of them and that was the reason I was going to buy one but the test drive turned me off big time. The car is simply boring and that is coming from a cheap '02 Z28 Camaro at the time.

POST 46Original post

Quotes source post: 4889517

LOL.... It's hardly elitist to be annoyed when someone rides up to you at a stoplight and "revs". Then there's my particular favorite........speed up/slow down.......speed up/slow down....over and over again next to you on the highway... To be fair, it's not always a Honda or Nissan driver (sometimes it's an SRT4 or an M3... ), but it's generally some kid running on more hormones than brains. Maybe in Seattle the kids covet Prius's and Minivans, but everywhere else Honda's and Nissan's (among others) seem to be a common receptacle for their excess stickers. I just hope the internet threat of a blowing engine keeps them away from used Porsche's for a while...

I've only once ever been challenged by a G35. It was a sedan. It was a pretty pathetic attempt. It was maybe a month after I got my 996. From having previously owned a G35 6MT Coupe, I didn't see this common from G35 owners when I owned one or now. Surprisingly, I very rarely ever get a challenge. The only one I can remember in the last year was a Maserati Quattroporte. I think people are intimidated because of the rollbar in my car. I have been around Z28s and Corvettes with loud exhausts on the street. They always just back off when they see the rollbar in the car and don't want to mess with me. I could understand if they were fustrated though. My G35 coupe was a miserable piece of junk with the similar quality to a C5 Corvette: lots of squeaks and rattles with about 30 days in the shop its first year. Nissan contributed heavily to my 996 fund after my Texas Lemon Law case.

POST 49Original post

Quotes source post: 4890975

Yep I did not get many challenges at all with my Mustang because of the roll-cage they could see from every angle, plus the helmet hanging from the middle hoop didn't hide the fact that they would be up against a serious race car that should not really be on the street (OK the helmet wasn't displayed)

POST 50Original post

It's funny, but the only cars to challenge me when I got my first Porsche, a Boxster, were old dudes. One was in a Lexus convertible, another was in a Caddy CTS. I guess grey-haired guys have egos too... In the Cayenne S it is always the G35 20-somethings with too much product in their hair. In the 996 Turbo it's always turbo diesel pick-ups. I guess the wierdos who come out to challenge the Porsche are a function of which Porsche you are driving and where you are driving it.

POST 51Original post

That is funny about the trucks. The same in Seattle and the Napa valley area????????? I could not believe how the F350's with exhausts large enough to crawl through behave in this place.

POST 52Original post

I've had a different experience. I own a 97 993 completely stock. While I get the usual ricer cars challenging me, I get more older guys in new Corvettes and M5's. They've all kicked my ***... I'm buying a 930 Turbo, but no way I'd mess with that car... way too dangerous...

I'm not even sure what Nissan could physically DO to the RWD G35 to make it feel like a FWD Civic. If you had said that the dynamics were comparable to the RWD Miata, I'd even humor your argument, but to hear someone say that the G35 drives nothing like a 3-series comes as a surprise when you consider that the 3-series was the car in Nissan's scope when they developed the G35. Comparisons between the two cars inevitably range from "the G isn't far off from the 3-series" to "the G wins the comparison test". I mean, assuming you're correct, how did Nissan manage to fool so many in the automotive industry? Certainly we'd have heard these Civic comparisons by now, wouldn't we?

POST 57Original post

Quotes source post: 4892008

Ok, right on the FWD vs RWD. That is only one aspect though. I am talking the feeling of the steering, brakes, throttle, suspension, and so on. A Bimmer is light years ahead of a G35. I feel BMW earned the "Ultimate Driving Machine" slogan. And Nissan fooling the auto industry? It wasnt because the "drive" of the G35, rather the reason 99% of people buy cars. It was their looks.

BMW is still the king when it comes to the driving experience, but infiniti and lexus have convinced me to now go take a look at their offerings which is a long ways away from where the japanese firms have stood with me even 3 years ago. i think tippy you sound like a fairly intelligent guy so when you're expressing your disappointment for the G35, you're embellishing internet style. the g35 gets positive reviews from those who make a living testing cars, who have a lot more experiience than many of us test driving cars, racing cars. the bmw is not light years ahead of their competition in any dept whatsoever. i really like the g35 coupe. even the "old" one still looks very fresh. drive wise, sure it runs out of breath (i can only speak to the "old" one) and the interior needs serious help much like the 996 but too bad you can't nickel and dime yourself with interior upgrades like the porsche 911... i'd make the claim that a stock G35 interior is superior in quality to a lightly optioned 996 911 interior and perhaps even the 997... anyways, bottom line, the g35 coupe.... fantastic car and this is coming from a guy who owned an e46 m3. would i ever buy one? no way. if a friend said they want a g35 coupe would i say yea congrats nice ride? heck yea. at the end of teh day, don't think i'm not in love with the 911 experience. i kicked the beloved S54 M3 outta the garage and am not ever looking back. sometimes i just don't understand why people trash on other cars to get their point across that THE car is better. so many cars these days are so nicely built... their strengths and weaknesses... overlap.

POST 60Original post

I will never knock the Japanese marks on quality, they runs circles around all other countries cars in this dept. What I had simply stated was the driving experience of a G35 is simply boring. Even my friends old 2000 323i had an awesome driving experience, it was bottom shelf BMW. Take a M roadster for a spin, it is a blast. The Japanese marks just cant deliver "that" experience. They build 'em good and some, like the G35, are good looking cars but they just cant capture a good driving experience. Ok, the S2000 and the STi possibly. Oh, and by the way, I could care less what a mag writer thinks of a car, reviews are always subjective and all over the place.

POST 61Original post

I agree, and although I don't own any of their cars here, the japanese have some great products on the performance side. Really across the board they come a long long way, that new GT-R in particular is astonishing. Sure there's no snob factor, and it'll get stolen faster than you can say caramel machiatto, but I'm certain that car will be faster than a turbo. And as ugly as my friend's Subaru is, it is rally car exciting to drive. The other thing that I find incredible is an old german hallmark, over-engineering. There are people running space shuttle boost into that old supra straight six block for years and they keep ticking over. And Luxury? I've been in the long wheelbase Lexus sedan (LS600? no clue) and it's maybach plush, reclining rear seats, great car to be driven in. Trade my AMG? no, but different car. We have an LX470 overseas near one of our projects and there is just nothing like it from anyone when it comes to combining durability with insulation , extremely important in harsh third world environments. No G-wagen, X5 or Rover comes close to it or the big LandCruiser (Amazon) when considering general "invulnerability". It's just bulletproof.

POST 62Original post

totally guys. i'm as big a snob as they come, but i can recognize game when they got game. if i'm bmw, mercedes... shareholder exec... if i'm not sweating about toyota... i shouldn't be on their payroll right now. they're bringing value and just like the g35, nissan GTR, s2000... all are bringing a unique value to the table and with a discount. so again, none of these cars deserve to be trashed on. a bmw 325i is just as boring to drive as a G35 sedan. i had one as a loaner for a week when my M3 was getting fixed up for a headlight issue. and sure it's common to hear someone hit back and say i dont' care about car writers blahblah... steve millen reviews cars. the guys on evo are serious drivers with serious experience... i trust their judgement more so than any of you internet porsche fan boys.

POST 65Original post

OK this is my way of looking at why we own what we do: Isn't it about status as to why you own what you do and not necessarily what car out performs the other? I mean, how many 'F' car owners really buy one and drives it like it is made to be driven (as depicted on shows such as Top Gear)? Basically when someone says they own a Ferrari it is status symbol and nothing more (however I will respect owners that track them). For example (in my case that is): in conversations with people that you just meet at any gathering or have not seen in a while, the guys will usually bring-up cars, and of course it is mentioned what you drive. When someone says they drive a Porsche it says a lot about you and where you are in your career and life. It doesn't matter what Porsche, it is a still a Porsche. Only other Porsche enthuasists in the group may actually take the discussion of your Porsche further, but rarely does that happen. When someone mentions they drive a high-end car made by one of the top sellers (Nissan, Toyota, Lexus, Infiniti, etc.) it's great to know they went to the top of the line within that manufacturer, but it still is a Nissan, Toyota etc. So to me it is status and it feels good to own a Porsche knowing that I am one of not many that do, especially in my area. I see G35's and 350Z's galore on the road. I have nothing against them, but again will they all look at me as I pass, yes, will I look at them when they pass, no, to me it's just another car on the road. When another Porsche passes me then yes I recognize by looking over, also I will do the same when a Ferrari etc. passes me. I guess it is because where I live and drive there are not a lot of cars like a Porsche etc. on the road. So call me a snob or whatever, I do not mind. I didn't buy my Porsche to beat-up on cars that do not give me the status I am looking for. My life has evolved from V8 muscle cars to a Porsche, and that is a huge leap and a big change in my life, and it all comes down to my career advancement, I can now afford more luxury items, items that I could not afford 10 years ago. Buying the Porsche was a reward for my hardwork, knowone else was going to reward me with such a nice gift. Note: for those that bought a Porsche because of racing heritage and actually race them, then a BIG for you, that is what the car is for.

POST 70Original post

My personal situation sounds a lot like Speed Demon's. Status did play a small part for me and heritage of the mark/model as well. The 911 is a car I lusted after since my early 20's. I wasn't at a point in my life where I was able to and comfortable of owning one until my mid-40's. Why did I initially gravitate to a 911? Simple, it's a 911. It was a 911 in 1963 and it's still a 911 in 2008. Vastly different in a lot of ways, but a 911 is a 911 is a 911. How many Honda's, Nissan's, Subaru's, Mitsu's can you say that about? I'm not knocking these cars or the people that own them. They make some fabulous cars. And I realize that not everyone is in a financial position to own a 911 or that everyone has the same reaction to the car that I have. I think if you enjoy cars, you should drive what ever blows your skirt up. Any debate on which one is better is pointless IMHO.

While the M Roadster IS a blast, don't make the claim that the 323i had an "awesome" driving experience. It may RIDE better than the G, but the G runs circles around it in every other category. It's essentially a BMW economy car. I guess I'm not sure what experience you're looking for that the BMW offers that you can't get in the Infiniti. I've driven both extensively and the the Bimmer is more refined and rides better, but the G is easily argued to be the funner car. It must be a coincidence then that they always get the BMW reviews "right", as they're usually rated pretty high. I guess I just find it hard to claim that the two cars are nothing alike, when the G35 essentially exists entirely BECAUSE of the 3-series. That said, I wouldn't make light of the magazine reviews; those guys' butts are surely planted in more cars than yours or mine and could probably argue circles around either one of us on the merits of either. One thing I do know: I've never seen a magazine completely dismiss either car as not being up to snuff in the driving dynamics department.

Consider this: Touring edition 350's going for around 40,000+ and other models just under 40. G35's are in the same ballpark. G37s hover around 42.5K. Decent 996's are going for between 25-45 (99-01's ~25-35K, and 02-03s ~35-45K, or thereabouts). Just on the numbers, it appears that people buying new 350's and G35's (37's)have to make an affirmative choice not to get a used 911. Perhaps financing is an issue or maybe there are other considerations about buying an "older" 996. But IMO - performance wise at least - you're not sacrificing by getting a 5 year old 996 vs. a new 350/G35/G37. Also, the used 996's have already taken the big hit on depreciation, unlike the new 350/G35/G37. Even adding a couple thousand for an after market warranty, you're still in a fairly recent 911 for the same price (or a little less) than a new import. Plus you get cache free. When I see 350s/G35s cruising around, I wonder if they even went to the Porsche dealership. They might have been surprised at the cars that were in their price range - and became one of the P-car fold instead of streetlight racing me to prove (to themselves) that they have a fast car -td

I will join the thread from hell It's nice that Toyota's and Nissan's don't rust as bad as they used to.. or do they? Here in the Northeast an old 300ZX or 280 is a rare sight.. and forget a 70's car... I had a 280ZX many years ago, it was perhaps 5 years old when the front fender rusted off I hate it when that happens! That said, I have driven the 350z, the G35's and many other of the Japanese sports car/Sports sedan offerings, No I don't think these cars a built like BMW's, Porsche etc.. but some of them are quite fun to drive and if a car puts a grin on my face, it's done it's job, who cares who made it. From the American side I think the new Corvette is a huge amount of fun and a bargain, especially the Z06

POST 78Original post

same thing can be said for all cars of that era and not sure why we assume porsches are built so well esp given the poor interior quality of lightly optioned 996/997 interiors if i had a regular 996 interior, i'd be kinda embarrassed by it honestly... you seriously have to spend at least $10-15Gs on the options list to get it up to snuff which is going to sound utterly absurd to many folks who drive these commuter cars (3 series, G series, A4s etc)

Believe it or not, Ben, I share your opinion about the snobbery that goes on. I didn't really like the tone of the thread from the beginning--you know, the whole "How DARE that Japanese car rev its engine at my $25k Porsche!" I think everyone knows that the G35 was Nissan's response to the popularity of the BMW 3-series and that while it might not be its 100% equal, they share many of the same attributes. Also, I do have to question whether the new 335i would have a 300+ HP twin-turbo inline-6 if the G35 didn't exist. Competition makes things better.
