Side note: The 1st time cleaned my 02 Boxster's MAF was around 80K miles and did so trying to eliminate it as cause of symptoms that turned out to be bad AOS.

Suggestion
If the paper towel contains dirty cleaning residue you might consider replacing that aftermarket air filter with the stock one that in my experience keeps the MAF clean even after 80K miles.
Leading evidence: 'air oil separator' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'air oil separator' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean even' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Do so with MAF over clean white paper towels to catch the aerosol cleaning fluid that runs off the MAF.

Side note: The check engine light might come on when you run the engine, drive the car with teh MAF disconnected so you will have to have the ability to pull the error codes -- to make sure they are from the MAF being disconnected and not from something else -- and to erase the error codes and turn off the check engine light.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 1999 with a light surge 2-300 rpms at around 2000 rpm with light throttle. No stored codes or cel no other symptoms of anything wrong. Car has a KN filter installed by PO .Dirty MAF? Any other ideas.
Dirty MAF a possibility but only because the KN filter present.
Side note: The 1st time cleaned my 02 Boxster's MAF was around 80K miles and did so trying to eliminate it as cause of symptoms that turned out to be bad AOS. Even after 80K miles -- with stock air filtering in place -- MAF was not dirty at all. 2nd time was maybe 80K miles later when this time symptoms pointed to a bad MAF. Again I cleaned this MAF and again it was not dirty. Error codes returned and I replaced the MAF. Turned out to be a leaking oil filler tube cap. 3rd time was again triggered by MAF symptoms. Again the (replacement) MAF was not dirty but it did still remain a suspect. On a hunch I put the orignal MAF back in the car (saved it thankfully) and the old MAF worked just fine and the new replacement MAF -- after I forget how many miles of service did prove to be the problem. But in all 3 cases with thousands of miles on the MAF not one was even remotely in need of cleaning.
With a properly functioning and maintained stock air filtering system to have no dust or dirt (or oil) on the MAF after 80K miles of use ... why would anyone seek a "better" filtering system. I would think any filtering system would be even under the best of conditions no better than the stock system and could prove to be worse, and more trouble to service.
BTW, in case it is not obvious from the above, another point is that with no dust/dirt on the MAF this means the engine's received very little dust and dirt as well. We all forget that in running say a tank of gas through the engine the engine also consumes a huge volume of air, thousands upon thousands of cubic feet of air. Next time you're outside look around towards the distance. Unless a very clear day all that dust and stuff you see in the air is in the air the engine consumes. I want the very best filter on my engine's intake to remove as much of that as possible.
Anyhow, I'd clean the MAF. Do so with MAF over clean white paper towels to catch the aerosol cleaning fluid that runs off the MAF. If the paper towel contains dirty cleaning residue you might consider replacing that aftermarket air filter with the stock one that in my experience keeps the MAF clean even after 80K miles.
Install the MAF and see if the symptom gone. If it is gone another reason to revert to the stock air filter system.
If the MAF not dirty and the symptom remains you can disconnect the MAF from the wiring harness. Do so after of course you have properly installed the MAF back in the hole in the air intake tubing.
Then start the engine and drive the car as you otherwise and see if the symptom returns/appears. Be sure you give it plenty of time.
Side note: The check engine light might come on when you run the engine, drive the car with teh MAF disconnected so you will have to have the ability to pull the error codes -- to make sure they are from the MAF being disconnected and not from something else -- and to erase the error codes and turn off the check engine light.
If the symptom does not return with the MAF disconnected reconnect it and try again. If the symptom returns... MAF.
If the symptom appears with the MAF disconnected. Not the MAF.
Slim possibility, but the symptom could be the early stages of a bad AOS (air/oil separator) or possibly something else.
If the AOS, these can start to go bad and cause some odd engine behavior. What you want to be aware of while you're experimenting is that if at any time the symptoms get worse, new symptoms appear, the engine starts running rough, exhibits an unstable idle, smokes every startup and continues to smoke after startup, starts making any out of the ordinary noises, to as soon as it safe to shut the engine off and leave it off.
Then it is time to get the car flat bedded to a qualified shop for diagnosis.
Your time for diagnosing the problem just expired.
Sincerely,
Macster.
