I lubricated the helper spring and now it doesn't squeak anymore.

I know, since the pedal assembly bushes were changed first, without the squeeking subsiding.

Regardless, I'll have them lubricate the clutch next time I'm in for an oil change.

It can't hurt to try lubricating the pedal inside though.

Does anyone know if the clutch (whichever link or pivot that is the culprit) can be lubricated without dismantling?

I have about 75,000 miles on this clutch and it works fine (albeit a bit stiff) and figure I won't need to replace the clutch until around 100,000 miles.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My clutch squeaks a bit when depressing or releasing at a moderate speed. I hear the squeak even with the engine off. i think its the spring on your clutch pedal inside the car??? mine squeaks a bit... no mechanical issues... i just need to lubricate it a bit, maybe even replace that spring if i won't quiet down... but my car is primarily a track car so it doesn't bother me....
It really doesn't sound like a 'spring' type of noise. It sort of sounds the same as when you have a glass of water, and wet your finger and rub it around the rim. It's almost a pure tone.
It can't hurt to try lubricating the pedal inside though. Is the spring easy to locate?
Do you really think so? It makes the noise when the engine isn't running, so I doubt it. It really sounds like a hinge of some sort that needs lubrication.
Paul,
Yes, I had the same on my car and it was heard both when engine was running and switched off. I know, since the pedal assembly bushes were changed first, without the squeeking subsiding.
Ciao,
Johannes E.
Does it always squeak when depressed? In my case if I execute a fast shift, I don't hear the squeak. If on the other hand I depress and release the clutch pedal slowly, I hear it. I'm going to bring it to the attention of the service tech on my next checkup which won't be until June.
Crawl down under the dash and depress the pedel with your hand. Look and listen from where the noise is coming from. If you hold the piston that goes through the firewall while pressing and the noise changes, then it is most likely that part of the mechanisim. DO NOT greese the piston (push rod) You can also test the movement of the spring while the pedal is on the flor.
It's probably just the clutch pedal assembly inside the car. No need to scare the man!
I had the same problem taken care of under warranty. The techs replaced a couple pieces of the assembly (I guess it was a slow week) but it's probably sufficient to just lube the pivot point.
Yea its a simple fix, mine was doing it right out of the showroom......they simpley lubricated it, and all was good...well untill the RMS but thats diffrent thread...HEHE
Strangely enough, it's not squeaking anymore and I didn't do anything. The noise in my steering column went away too. Regardless, I'll have them lubricate the clutch next time I'm in for an oil change. I'm going to grab that TSB now too. Thanks guys!
The squeaky clutch is a common problem on the 996. I've heard about it from ohhhh, about 100000000 people.
Throw a little grease on it and it should be fine.
I AM a contributing member of renntech.org, but when I went looking for the TSB, I found it listed but was unable to view it. There aren't any links. What gives?
It's probably the slave clutch cylinder spring and it requires the replacement of the slave clutch. Unfortunately it requires the (you guessed it) removal of the engine to do so if you don't have the warranty it will cost a just a few bucks.
Good luck.

Since when does changing the slave clutch require removing the engine? What you're smoking must be pretty expensive.
Hi all,
I just recently purchased a 2001 996 c4. I have the same noise. There is no noise when the car is cold. It come from the rear of the car also with or without the engine running. The clutch works fine, engagement/disengagement is fine, its just noisy and annoying.
What was the disposition of the problem discussed/ Was it the clutch slave cylinder. Did lubing it help. If the slave was bad, did replacement require removal of the engine. It appears from 1999Porsche911's post that is not required to replace a slave cylinder.
