One month ago I installed the Kenwood Excelon 693.

Plus it has a 40 gb (16 used for nav) built in to store your mp3's.

Suggestion
I chose this unit because I had separate modules for nav and bluetooth and hated the fact that I had pre-wired usb power and had cables running all over the place.

I too have the Bose sound system and i think we run the same wiring and harness units.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Looked up and down on the forum, and found some recomendations but they are rather dated.
I spent some time on crutchfield.com trying to narrow down my choices, alas i can't make up my mind. Maybe you guys have some recomendations for me.
I am looking for an Ipod (5G) compatible HU, that can control and display navigation of the ipod on the HU, also looking for the HU to be very robust as far as bluetooth goes. I dont need/care for navigation.
FYI, I drive a MY02 996TT, so it DOES have the BOSE stereo, hope that doesn't complicate things.
And of course, the cheaper the better, but I can spend a tad more if something really nice pops up.
Any ideas?
thanx

I just installed the single din jvc kd-nx5000 its fully capable of handling all the things you want if you buy the accessories for it. The ipod control is only 20 bucks more.
This unit plays dvd and any divx, mpg, avi movies as well. Plus it has a 40 gb (16 used for nav) built in to store your mp3's.
I barely had to do anything to swap units. Love the unit and all its gizmo's.
Yes they do make a double-din, check out jvc's website. Personally, if you go double din, go with the new Pioneer Avic D3 (i think thats the model). I hear good things about that.
I too have the Bose sound system and i think we run the same wiring and harness units. Its pretty much a straight hook up wire to wire. The JVC also has pre-outs for front/rear/sub.
My next thing is to upgrade the speakers, and amp at some point.
errr... both are real nice units, but a tad pricy for a non-audiophile.
You guys got any recomendations on the $200-$400 range?
It doesn't need to have a HD, HD radio or navigation, OR screen.
thanx again.
Frank
Alpine is making a model designed to control the ipod in a more ipod way than their older models. I understand that it works well but that the lighting is a bit different than our dash.
I believe there are several new models coming out that are mp3 players ie clarion, pioneer, alpine.
For a couple more hundred bucks to get you all the other accessories, will save you time and money when you eventually want to add other things to it.
I chose this unit because I had separate modules for nav and bluetooth and hated the fact that I had pre-wired usb power and had cables running all over the place. Plus having to remove the units from being stolen made it a pain. Having the one unit to just take out and put away made more sense to me.
I also had the ipod hooked up to the becker unit before as well, but did not like the fact that I could not control it from the HU without having to go with the Denison Ice-link (which I heard wasn't very good).
One month ago I installed the Kenwood Excelon 693. I love it. Has three pre-outs, bluetooth, USB, direct IPod, lots of sound control, etc. I purchased for $200 from Rod Birch (among other components) at
http://www.caraudioinnovations.com/
but you can get it for less here

. I can help w/ install too... which reminds me, I need to post a thread on my install.
Doug
Do you have any pictures of the install? Just want to get a sense for how clean it looks on the dash....
Also how is the bluetooth performance?
The most important things for me are bluetooth and satellite radio...
Don't need the Nav...
Wow, *****!!!
I dig the symetric old-school look. Actually, I dig that unit completely. Although I really want a nav system in whatever I end up going with, I'm so bad at directions. Will look at the ones recommended in this thread.
FWIW, here's mine (pre console delete). I thought that the Nakamichis were the best match to the rest of the dash, but the Alpine's iPod integration was great. The iPod is in the rear console box. The Alpine lets you choose your display colours, and I find the orange option looks reasonably complimentary to the rest of the dash.
Ah yes, that's another nice feature of the Kenwood too. As a matter of fact, it has a "user" color option controls, that allow very precise matching (for those sticklers - not me though).
I'd be very interested to see how the colors match up tot he stock Porsche LCDs. I will not/can not put in a HU that doesn't look like it belongs there, which is seriously like 99% of them. I have an ancient, (1997) Blaupunkt Toronto that has Variocolor and it will match every color on its face exactly to the th ePorsche, and sounds better than the OEM unit, BUT it doesn't do anything but the basics (AM/FM/CD/Aux), and it skips easily on CDs that are home recorded. If they made a unit like that with HD, BT, and iPod interface, I'd buy 2 of them in a heartbeat!
EDIT: sheesh, didn't even see that there was a second page....never mind...
