Suspected cause
There is low demand for the 993's as well, but much fewer cars for sale, so prices are probably a bit more stable.

I would recommend '02 - '04, which will have the 3.6L engine and vario cam plus and a few other improvements versus the pre-face lift '99 - '01.

I'm a 993 guy so I've never posted here. So Hello everybody !
Lately I started seeing the prices for 99~04 996 cars really drop off. Just the other day I was on eBay watching a "no reserve" 2002 with 65K miles go for 23.7. To be honest I was holding back form bidding because I all ready own a 964 & a 993. But at 23.7 it was really tuff not pulling the trigger. I spent some time looking at the 996 buyers guide and I’m thinking I’d prefer one with the 3.6 motor. Ok, so is there a point to this post. Yes sorry I was rambling on, I’m not seeing such a big drop off for 993’s or for that matter 964’s but the 996’s are falling so far, I actually can’t really understand it. Ok, I’m not dumb I know the economy is in the ****ter, but still 23.7 for a 02 blew me away. Just what the heck is happening? Sure hope Bama gets things straightened out. LOL
It has something to do with the fact that the 996 was a much more popular, successful car than the 993's, 964's etc.
Porsche sold many, many 996's. So there is a lot of supply + low demand = low prices.
There is low demand for the 993's as well, but much fewer cars for sale, so prices are probably a bit more stable.
Feel better yet?
964+993= Porsche going bankrupt
996= Porsche becoming one of the most profitable and successful car companies in the world, so much so that they just bought VW. Thanks to the Boxster and 996's.
Don,
First off, welcome to the 996 Forum.
Second, put your flame suit on. Let me explain. Every now and then someone from the 993 Forum will come over and start bashing the 996 saying stuff like.... all 996s are doomed to blow up....... 996s aren't REAL Porsche's, because they are water cooled..... etc. We know that they are just yanking our chains, but the thread usually starts out with a "seemingly innocent question" (like you did) and then it grows into a Troll Trash Fest. So I am just warning you that some here may think you are simply "trolling for trouble."
With that said, I'll assume your question is a legitimate one. There are a number of legit reasons why prices are dropping.
First and foremost, the economic situation, as you stated, is causing a lot of commodities to devalue.
The oldest 996s are now just over 10 years old. Right at the "in between" age. Too old to be fresh and new and too young to be a classic.
Porsche sold a lot more 996s than 993. I don't know the figures, but it is the "supply and demand" principle.
993s were the last air cooled 911, so it marked an end of an era and to some, that made them "keepers."
When adjusted for inflation, 996s were probably more affordable than 993s were when they were new.
The 996 is the first generation of the water cooled 911 and the second generation, the 997 had a lot of improvements/enhancements versus the 996.
The "face lift" 997 has just come out (2009 models). These have more improvements/enhancements versus the 997s pre-face lift models ('05 -'08) than the 996 face lift ('02 - '04) had over the 996 pre-face lift models ('99 - '01).
The early 997 models have also seen a pretty dramatic drop in prices. Some '05 997 are available in the mid $40K and 997 S models are available in the upper $40's to lower $50's.
So there is one man's answer to your question.
People who buy used Porsches (like you and me - whether it's a 964, 993, 996, etc.) are really a pretty narrow market. And there are a lot of 996s available right now.
Personally, I think one of the best "bangs-for-the-buck" performance wise.
You should pick one up - it will complement your stable nicely.
NO BASHING INTENDED HERE, I WANT one REALLY I DO, but maybe I'll wait for a 997?. just FYI, I'm in love with both of my old, and really old 911's. that said I'd like to go for a newer one. My really old 964 cab is a supersweet example. I had the car sold twice and ended up not going through with the deal. pissing off both buyers. LOL what year is the best for the 996's. as i stated before i would perfer one with the 3.6
Thought i would stop by and say hello to my ole 996's buddies. I still have love for you guys!
Ivangene, Redridge, gota911, Marc and the gang............let's see some pics for the New Year....
Well, what started as a
has made a very nice turnaround!
I will say one thing about the 996. It might sound funny, but if you park next to a 997, most non-Pcar people think you have the newer model. (Not that I would not like a 997, I do subscribe to the "buy as new as you can afford" line of thinking, but it is rather funny. Also actually like the 996 interior over the 997)
Michael, please tell me that "she" will be at lunch on Friday!!! PLEASE, PLEASE!!!
We are a lot more fun than most of the 997 guys! Most of them are a little too serious for me, but I hang out there anyway because it lets me keep abreast (no pun intended) of the 997 goodies.
This is a fantastic thread!
Oh, to the op - the 2002+ 996 gets you the larger motor. There have been a couple 40th anni models for sale recently - they have the x51 power kit, lots of p-car for the buck.
Subscribed.
With the economy dumping the prices of 996s and even 997s are going south. Rather than focus upon what that figure is, go buy one,--it's an opportunity to get a lot of performance for less money.
wow...this thread got really good.....
Hahaha...great thing about a 996...only the most discerning (and probably problematic) woman can tell the difference between a 996 and a 997...keep it shiny and you have a "brand new" 911.....ask me how I know...lol
WHO CARES?????
That reminds me of the time my wife was out to dinner with three other female teachers from school. A very well endowed lady walked into the restaurant and a couple of the teachers made comments like "Oh, THOSE aren't real!" and "Yeah, she bought those!"
My wife smiled and simply stated "Men don't care!" They all had a good laugh about the truth of her statement.
+1 Big time... the only requirement is for two, anywhere on the ribcage (I'm not picky...) In the famous words of my favorite redneck, Ron White... "If you've seen one pair... you pretty much want to see them all..."

The difference is getting optioned with Motons or ROW. Track suspension is firmer with directness of purpose where ROW is an all around comfortable ride for daily use.
+1
I just went through this process myself. My search basically came down to looking at two different models: '02-04 C4S and the 40th anniversary coupe. The price pressure of 996 Turbos and 997s are forcing the prices for these cars into the mid-30s for lower mileage cars. The guys at my indy think that the 996 represents the best buy in the P-car market right now and that the market will eventually recover. Now I'm not convinced about that last part, but I bought my car to drive and not as an investment.
Good luck with your search!
Yep, 997 prices are at the price I paid for my 996 back in the late summer of 2005. If I were you, I'd skip the 996 and just wait 2 years to pick up a 997 instead.
I've owned dozens of cars and almost 10 Porsches. I must say I really rather enjoy the 996. I even have an MK1 model, albeit with some suspension mods. Anyway, I like the 996 just fine, particularly a GT3 if that's your cup of tea. Whatever the reason for the resale being weak on the 996 at the moment, I don't see that as a reason to not buy one, quite the opposite.
Well, like we said in college:
2 **** a hole and heartbeat is all we needed after 2 AM.
Are you all still talking about 996 values? sheeze.
Maybe I should just start a catastrophic engine failure thread for more pics from Ivan?
BTW -zroadhouse .....saweet ride man.
Best thread that I've seen in a while. Keep it coming.
BTW, I'm driving an 02 C4S through the worst winter on record and absolutely love it. I've never felt more comfortable on snowy slippery roads and it will go through anything as long as the wheels are on the ground with enough weight for traction. i.e. don't try to drive over a three foot high snow bank. I don't care what 996's are worth as I'm keeping mine. Whatever it costs to keep it on the road will be a lot cheaper than getting a 997 which would be the next obvious step for a DD.
Once Z tells you why he went C4S, I'll tell you why I went 40th Anniversary!!! In my old 996, I rarely had P-cars return the headlight flash. In the 40th, I'm 3 for 3 so far. (356, 911SC, and a 993)
Link
This is a link to a few shots of an accident... This car is a wreck, but amazingly still seems to have been a walk away... Normally I dont like these, but this shows how tough our cars are in the event you need tough!!
That's great, save the flash! I test drove a 40th back in December and got a headlight flash (which I happily returned) from an approaching BMW. Of course he might have been warning me of Smokey hiding just off the road a 1/4 mile in front of me...
Am interested in how you made your choice as well.

I talked to my indy guy last night (he was installing a new exhaust on a GT3, custom welding and all so it could be removed and stock dropped back in within minutes) - told him about the MOD II on the 3.6 cans, he said he would like to see and hear that....
soon enough my friend
Hey, I'm a 993 guy and stumbled over here following a thread on our forum. You 996 guys post lots better photos than we 993 guys. I still like my car and I'm not changing but I'll come over for visits to check your pictures from time to time.
Duck,
Welcome to the 996 Forum, the Phun Phorum! Stop on by any time. Just because you drive a 993, we won't hold that against you........... too much!
I went for the C4S because I love the styling, handling, and AWD (for when I eventually move back to Colorado). The particular car that I bought already had a number of nice mods made to it (PSS10s, H&R sways, Aluminum gauges, Fabspeed exhaust, B&M short shifter, etc.). I made an offer on it which was accepted. When I talked to the owner, I could really see how much he had loved his car and I told him that I would buy it if the PPI was good.
Later that same day, I had another offer on a 40th accepted. Because I made the commitment to the C4S owner, I had to turn it down. Happily, I was able to refer red911c2 to the seller and it looks like everything worked out great for them!
So in a way, it was chance that led me to buy the C4S. Had the other seller responded a day sooner, I might have bought his 40th and red911c2 might still be looking for a car.
This is my first P-car, and I am very happy with it. I never did get to actually test drive a 40th, so I would definitely do that if possible. If you can test drive them side by side, that would be even better.
I really like the 40th's interior (better than my car's) with the exterior painted center console, painted rear seat surface, aluminum gauges, etc. And I bet I would love its LSD, lighter weight, and X51.
I think that you should pick the car that you fall in love with -- just don't sleep with it, because you'll make your wife/girl-friend jealous.
Hey, BTW, I had a bunch of folks flash me while driving this past week -- but they were all doing it to let me know about the cop around the corner. I think that maybe they mistook my car for a Honda with those black wheels.
Zack, I definitely owe you a few beers for passing this 40th onto me!!! Thanks again!
I love it for all the reasons Zack pointed out above. In addition, I love the wheels, the sport suspension, the full leather, the unique color (really grows on you), and the overall uniqueness of the car. Most importantly, it's a blast to drive!
Let me get this straight, you call me classless and then go on to say that I should become a member of this forum.
BTW, I already consider myself a contributing member as I regularly patronize many of the sponsors and advertisers of this site. Not to mention the fact that I myself have contributed to the content of the site over the years by giving helpful tips and info. Get off your high horse and give me a break.
It says in your signature that you are a small business sponsor, what is your business? I sincerely hope it is not one that I have done business with.
Also, I stand by my claim that the OP is a troll 993 owner simply here to bash the 996. There have been no less than 5 of these types of threads started in the last few months, many of them by 993 owners, that the OP could have posted in. Instead, he chose to rehash this same old BS in a brand new thread entitled "996 Prices Going South Big Time". Now that my friend is class.
I would agree that the thread starter just wanted to start trouble here. I would take a 996 over a 993 anyday of the week. Supply and demand is really the simply reason for the lower costs. Overall the 996 is superior to a 993, and many of us are not afraid to say it. Post 2 summed it up pretty good!
Now more pictures.
Ed,
That is some fine material there.
And for those that called them "fake".
1. If they feel real, then they are real.
2. I'd like to think of them as "upgraded".
You my friend are a really @$$, I stated this thread to get info on 996's because now it seems I can really afford one. NO way did I start this thing to disrespect anybody. I think its funny how this thread turned out. The 996s guys decided to start posting hot chick pix, hey Ive no problem with that. Whatever, they jacked my thread; believe me I wont loose one second of sleep over it. You guys can even label me a troll, which is really funny. My gut feeling some people are insecure here, you know who you are.
Im really truly sorry for the guys that paid 45~55K and now their car are worth maybe 25 ~35K. I feel your pain. My boat was 80K new in 04. Now Id be lucky to get 50 for it, thank god Im not selling.
Bottom line, by reading the stuff that was posted on the original subject, Im waiting for a 997. I would like to thank everybody who contributed. EVEN the guys that posted hot chick pix.
You say I have no class, well kiss my, @$$. LOL@U
Here's a newsflash for you. The economy is in the dumper and bargains abound for all cars (993's included).
Honestly, what was your 993 worth if you needed a quick sale 2 years ago? What's it worth for a quick sale today. See my point??
Why get so defensive about the guy posting a simple question?
All I gotta say is that someone in the market for a 996 should be thrilled at the prices. I think the OP said he might wait for a 997? Why would he want to do that? They aren't much different, perform very similar, and the 996 can be had at a bargain.
Anyone who buys a car and thinks of it in terms of resale value and as some sort of investment should have their head examined. Cars are for driving and for fun, so buy the best bang-for-the-buck and have at it. The 996 is the best deal there is for a car of this caliber.

That Car is sweet, but look at this one for 35K
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...&seller_type=b
Well, I'm a little disappointed that some of my fellow 996'ers felt that Surfer2001 was only here to push your hot buttons. It seemed to start innocently enough and the initial responses all seemed appropriate. Then someone decided it was more fun to post the girl pix than worry about the drop in resale. I for one give that effort a real big PLUS ONE, because, after all, the pix on this thread beat the "I'd Hit It" thread by a mile since nearly all of these have a Porsche in them and that makes it MUCH better. Too bad we lost the steam on that idea a couple pages back when somebody pulled a gun and started pointing at everyone in the building.
I say we continue to hijack this thread with a LOT more pix of women and Porsches. Who cares about resale value anyway. Drive it HARD and drive it long. That's what they built them for (both chicks and Porsches).
Just my opinion. I could be wrong.
Not $35,000... $3,500 LOL!
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...&seller_type=b
I feel another one of those internet myths coming on with this one. Husband ran away with secretary, wrote his wife and told her to sell the Porsche for whaterver she could get for it... yadda yadda.
i think the 3500 was a typo, down below in the description you can see 35K. still great a price. by the way i perfer the 997 headlights over the 996. oh yea, 997 light look a lot like the ones found on my 993, oops.
I don't understand why if this is the fifth thread or more on the subject you didn't just pass it by...
Im a buyer...so as much info as possible is OK for me. And the market changes fast.
Calling him a troll sounds like sour grapes.
I think you may have taken this out of context. Dont you think jumping to the conclusion that the OP is a troll is a little premature? Dont the real 'troll's' have very low post counts and make it rather obvious what they have set out to do?
No high horse here, just like you, been here a while and am proud to contribute to this great forum.
While I really dont have a full blown business, just a small venture. I do offer a few 964/993 related products with which a large portion of those sales are donated to Project Rennwish, I am proud to say. So, no, you havent done business with what I offer, I only rebuild engines and gearboxes, not replace them. I do work on a few 996's and find them much easier to work on, a bit simpler really.
Well, this is your opinion and you are certainly entitled to it. However, I think you'll see that in this particular case, its really isnt so. Like others have mentioned, it appears you may have jumped to a conclusion on this one.
Thank you, if you knew me personally you'd know I'm not one to disrespect people, or to purposely start up trouble.
By the way Im not a 993 guy, not a 964 guy, not Power Boater, not a Biker.
Im Surfer who loves 911s. All 911s
I didn't and still don't think that Surfer2001 was here as a Troll. Go back and check what I wrote in post #4. I tried to warn him to put his flame suit on because some here would think this was an attempt to trash the 996. But Surfer didn't trash them. He asked a legitimate question about price and I think he was given some good, honest feedback.
Well, unfortunately, he did got the Troll treatment. Guys, we are better and bigger than that! If someone wants to start trashing the 996, then I'll jump on his *** just as quickly as anyone else. But let's at least wait until they talk trash before we label them as Trolls.
Hell, if we are just looking for a fight, maybe someone can start an OIL thread!
I think that Surfer and DreamCarrera are both good guys. Let's get back on topic....
I wish I had a tricked out Honda 2-door Accord... Those rides are BAD-A$$$$$!!!!!! You wanna trade your Honda straight up for a 40th???
Uhmmm.... I don't know, a 2004 for a 2008? I think some cash will have to cross my palm to convince me to make that swap!!!
Besides that, my car has appreciated since I bought it. Now all I need to do is find that one person in the United States that "appreciates" it and I'll be good to go!
Don, I stand corrected. Obviously by the tone of the post above you are very steeped in class. HAHA. Are there moderators here? Did this guy just call me a really a$$ or what? BTW, what is a really a$$.
Don, if you are ever in the Phila. area please look me up. I would be more than happy to kick your a$$. In all seriousness, look me up.
I just had an idea for a 996 forum poll.
Do you wear boxers, briefs, or panties?
From the looks of things here I would venture a guess that panties would win. Perhaps that is why the prices of 996s are falling so fast.
If a 996er were to post this BS on the 993 forum they would be lambasted beyond recognition.
Carry on ladies.
I will say this for 993 drivers, they wear boxers or briefs, albeit in slower cars.
But isnt that what is happening here only the other way around?
Like I've said many times before, the newer 911's are really a performance bargain.
Now where are those pictures of the hotties?
WTH is gong on with this thread? *** kicking? Lighten up. Enjoy your Porsches. Anyone who bought these cars as an investment should have their head examined.
You are truly and embarrassment to car enthusiasts everywhere. And having owned no less than 5 911's including two brand new 996's myself I can honestly say even to the "996er" community you think you're speaking for. I'm sure your wife and kids would be really proud to see someone come to their home so their husband and father could assault someone or worse, be assaulted himself on their front lawn.
If you're so eager to show everyone how tough you are with your 996, why don't you come down to the track and let your driving do the talking instead like the rest of us adults. I know a couple of guys in 914's and nicely setup 993's including this one that will teach you a lesson you won't forget...honestly - give us all a break from this nonsense it serves no one.
Im not sure how the personal insults got started... this is typically a mellow bunch of fellas...
In any case, I can't blame you for waiting for a 997 - its a pretty car. True, the value of my 4S has dropped, but I love that damn thing - and the cash would have done far worse in the market. The worst part is that I keep sinking money into it... next up a 2K exhaust purely for auditory pleasure!
Another option would be to think about a 996 based GT3. Their prices are falling more slowly, but are starting to become somewhat reasonable IMO.
One good reason I'm keeping my 4S - even though it's literally 'as new' and has all of 3500 miles on it, there's nothing out there that appeals to me for anywhere near the money that the Porsche would fetch in today's market. It's a keeper, for sure.
Personally I did not buy my C4S as an investment and will/do not care what it is worth until I decide to sell it. Believe me, I am not selling anytime soon.
BTW, some of the images are really inspiring :-)
Wow, I am truly stunned at the abuse that has been heaped on me here in the last few days. I have been called an a$$, classless, a jackass, an embarrassment to car enthusiasts everywhere, and told to kiss the OPs a$$, among other things. All of this for calling the OP a troll(how bad is that really?) for rehashing the same old 996 bashing garbage that litters this site. Furthermore, it is still my opinion, which I believe I am still entitled to, that this thread was started with the intent to bash 996s. I am validated, I believe, by the fact that the OP now says that he is not going to buy a 996 after all. Now there is a surprise. The OP has been on RL for at least the last 5 years and certainly knows by now that there is a search function built into the site. The original message starting this thread could almost have been taken verbatim from other recent thread starters.
I was not the one to start the real name calling here. The OPs remarks calling me an a$$ and then going on to say that I should kiss his a$$ are the embarrassments here IMHO and were totally uncalled for. How would those of you here react to those comments if they were directed at you? Over the internet or in my face those remarks are unacceptable to me and I stand by my response to those remarks. Id love to hear them from Surfer directly to my face, my guess is that he would not do that but I would genuinely like to see.
If I wanted to get a beating like this I could easily go and post on the various Vette forums. To receive this from my fellow PCar brethren is very disappointing.
Obviously I see things very differently from certain other members here and I feel very unwelcome on RL. However, the OPs verbal assaults go seemingly unnoticed here, again that is stunning to me. I think I will take a break from RL at least temporarily as the 996 forum has become of little value. It has become a waste of time re-run fest patrolled by the PC police. Unfortunately, I think the value of the content here has followed the price of the 996, obviously with some notable exceptions.
WAY to KEEP on subject
!!!
OMG I love that pic!!
BTW check this car out.. great price !!

Going back to "study" that picture
Phil, I sincerely hope this post is not directed at me. I met you in person a couple of years back at a charity car show in Ambler hosted be Fabspeed. I thought we had a very nice conversation and I enjoyed meeting you and seeing your "Pristine" car.
You certainly know that I am not Ben.
Anyway, best of luck to all of you and enjoy those PCars.
When I read the original post, I didn't think he was here to bash the 996. Even if he did, who cares? You enjoy your 996, right? People here often make fun of Hondas but that certainly doesn't take away from the fact I love my Honda S2000 and have a blast racing a Prelude. When it gets to the point people threaten to kick someone's ***, that just silly. Actually, really dumb and something I'd expect of immature high school kid. Now the hot chicks (too bad I didn't have a forewarning that was going to appear when looking at this thread at work)...yum.
As someone whose going to be buying a 996 this fall, I too questioned why this model's price is where it is. Heck, older Porsches are just as expensive and often times more. Why wouldn't someone question this? Oh well, carry on.
Hell, I make make fun of my Honda more often that you guys do, and the only difference between your comments and my comments, is that I am serious about what I say!
Wow, not only a "really a$$", but a dreaded long-winded one.
Anyway i think he was calling you a really monied person.
I am sensing a pattern with these black wheeled bargain 911s.

There are mixed opinions about if the modified headlights on this model are an improvement over the original, more classic looking ones. Some traditional enthusiasts prefer the softer look of the smaller round headlights, while others just can't seem to get enough of the larger "in your face" headlights. To each his own.
I just picked up an Artic silver 2001 C2 Cab tip with 35k miles, GT3 wheels, brake calipers and front bumper, Fabspeed exhaust & carbon goodies on the inside form a Porsche dealer for 28k. There has never been a better time to pull the trigger on a sweet car for a especially sweet deal! Just be careful of the wholesalers... You don't where that car has been!
My 996 friend (can you really call a person who drives a 996 a friend?) sent me over to this thread, since he knew that I was in the market for a replacement for my C4 (but he really knew that the guys over on the 964 forum are way too serious about their cars, and therefore, they ONLY post pictures of their cars, and that I might enjoy seeing what guys who are a wee bit less serious about their cars post up for pics)
Anyway, interesting subject (and pics). I love(d) my 964 C4, but I was tempted by the declining prices in the 996 market. I am probably going to stay in the 964 club, but I am hooked on all Porsches.
Not that I want to see ANY of them, but I wonder what kind of pics female Porsche owners have lurking on their hard drives?
