I believe about 12 to 18 months ago Porsche began making the transmission parts available for repairing the trannys rather than replacing them.

My friend has a 02 996 with about 60k on it and second gear is popping out. The shop said that they don't make the parts to fix it, you just have to swap the trans . Has anyone done any work on a trans and know where to get the parts? The trans is about $7500 ...

thats right parts are available, however you do need a press capable of 40ton. to disassemble the gearbox.

Parts are available and when I asked a tranny shop here in WA they told me it's around $ 2,500 w/o getting the tranny out and back in, so only labor and parts. I bought a used one and I know that 'ringmeister has one he is willing to sell with a little bit over 20k Mls, maybe you send him a PN.

I saw a Vertex ad in the most recent Excellence listing rebuilt 996 transmissions for $2,699. Has anybody tried one of these? (No search function). This is a LOT less expensive than the route I had to take on my '99 C4 a few years back.
