I believe they have to mill the heads and install the updated gasket that the factory installed on the late 1991 cars.

Do the heads need to be replaced for the leaks to stop or how are they addressed?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I finally calculated the depreciation on my 996. I purchased it for $34.5K 21 months ago. The value for the car is probably around $25K now. That equates to $452 dollars of depreciation per month. This is no different than any of other cars/depreciating assets out there with that price. Performance for the dollar wise - its the best bang for the buck... The only expense not calculated in this is my slippery slope of course. That was extra $$; no fault of anyone else but my own..

POST 2Original post

It's a heck of a lot better than the performance of your 401k, and you expected your car to depreciate!

POST 3Original post

thanks Chao... the 964 depreciation is even better!

yeah right! from low 20s to low teens in 8 months... Spoke to my mechanic yesterday and he advised me against buying an early 964 because they are such leakers.

Well, remember that you bought your 996 used and that vehicle depreciation curves are not linear. Anyone that bought a late-model 996 new would have a much different perspective on depreciation that someone who bought one where the depreciation curve was already flattening out. I completely agree though that 996s are currently great bang-for-the-buck purchases.

I know. I am taking it with a grain of salt. I will not buy one without seeing it personally..

I've had two of those "leakers" and they were fine cars. Most of the head leaks have been addressed by now.

I spoke to my mechanic today and he advised me against buing an early 996 because the all need a new engine...

POST 15Original post

I bought mine at the height of the market. Right now is a great time to buy one of these cars, as there are a ton of them out there, and the prices are incredible. Another reason I'm not selling -- at least not now.

It's been awhile for me so I'll try and recall... I believe they have to mill the heads and install the updated gasket that the factory installed on the late 1991 cars. If you check the 964 forum, you can find the exact Vin # where the changeover happened.

Both of those comments are not necessarily true but I've also heard the same comments from multiple indy P-car mechanics... I think they have that attitude because they are trying to steer customers to the years that are less likely to have a problem.

POST 18Original post

well, having just traded (to pick up in on Tuesday) a '96 993 for a 2002 C4S, i worked the numbers this way: 993 + C4S = $60,000. plus 10 yrs driving with current asset price $35-40k. So, i have been driving a great car for $3k per yr depreciation. I kinda think that works out in ROI world for me. Roy
