Leading evidence: 'Replace sensor' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'issue within the cluster' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace sensor' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

My only guess is that the panel is shutting down before the low-voltage can reset the gauge.

After a couple of drives, the gauge automatically reset itself to the correct location.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have an early 996.1 (3/98). About every 10th to 15th time I drive the car, when I turn it off, the water temp gauge does not reset. The gauge needle stays on the current temp reading. When restarting the car, both immediately and later, the temp gauge will treat the stuck position as the low-temp reading. The gauge will show the increase in cooling temperature relative to the new baseline (stuck position). So, if the gauge gets stuck at 90C, then when you drive the car next time, the 90C is treated as 20C, so the gauge now shows 160C. (Very unnerving, thank God for the HVAC hack to see actual water temp.) This will happen if there is an immediate hot start, or if it is allowed to sit overnight and then start cold the next morning. On really hot days, this actually causes the cooling temp gauge needle to interfere with the fuel gauge. After a couple of drives, the gauge automatically reset itself to the correct location. And it works until it gets stuck again. The fans work at the correct temperatures. It is just the gauge that is acting up. There is no rhyme or reason for the stuck scenario that I have been able to discern. So far, I have validated good connections on the back of the dash panel. The cooling gauge has been checked to ensure it correctly responds to voltage changes. We have replaced the sensor. My only guess is that the panel is shutting down before the low-voltage can reset the gauge. It almost feels like a relay may be failing and not keeping the voltage alive for a couple of seconds when powering down. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Any thoughts on how to fix it? jeff
