Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I am using a PC software that is no longer available retail.

Yup, I have used the scantool on my 99 996, 01 996.

Suggestion
for MY1996 and later OBD II codes.........it has reset capabilities.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Eddie: I went to the local AutoZone and bought an Actron scanner. It works great in my 99 996, but for some reason does not work at all in my 00 M5, though it works in a friends 540i.
I think it was about $100 or so, and it resets the Check Engine Light.

Baum Tools has one that they say is as good as the factory unit.
Here are the products they offer for Porsche.
These are professional products so they are probably pricey.
A scanner that does not provide you with details of the major sensor readings on the car will be a little use in diagnosing problems. Recommend you get one that shows the following (at minimum):
Long and Short term fuel trim
calculated load
coolant temp
engine compartment temp
timing
O2 sensors (4)
MAF
When I tried the infamous Orange Plug Horsepower Mulitplier, I got a bad miss two days later. The Actron told me which cylinders misfired and gave me two MAF errors, so it does an adequate job of telling you what's going on. BTW I tossed the Orangie, reset the CEL, and life has been good every since; the Actron is collecting dust.

I am using a PC software that is no longer available retail. However, I have looked at the AutoEnginuity software and it looks like it will do everything mine will do plus some. It's a little more expensive, but it is a tool you can not do without for new cars when you want to work on them yourself. If I were to need one now, I would buy this one.
that $79 Pep Boys thing is crap--will only give fault codes--won't even reset. Ya gota pay to play. I'm tellin you man
www.autoenginuity.com
it even comes with dyno software..about $200
Pete: good call on this product it seems like it can do alot and really money is not the problem with this issue. I am more of a hands on type of person and wants to mess with what I am able to work in sense of a DIY project
Thank agian everyone!!
Hey, if I buy one of these from
www.scantool.net
, which one will I need? Am I right in thinking its the ISO one??
Also, is there anything it does not do, that the Porsche main dealers one will do???
I just review the product on the site and find that it might not work with Porsches at least the model I have 99 C2.
Pete should know first hand since he had use it. If you go to autoenginuity and Auterra they both cost about 159-239 which does a lot more then the ones we cna get from your local parts store
Hope this helps, I am learning also if there is any mistake forgive me

I heard from som of the members over on RennTech that its pretty good. This is the one I was thinking about buying but haven't gotten around to it yet.
Yup, I have used the scantool on my 99 996, 01 996. {as well as quite a few other ISO vehicles including F150, BMW525, Ferrari 360, Volvo XC90, Merc Wagon & SL55, and 97 Boxster.
There are $100 code readers like this Equus poduct
Code Reader
for MY1996 and later OBD II codes.........it has reset capabilities.
Keep in mind it gives generic OBD II PO codes and their short description (and holds them in memory to display in the supposed order of importance). I've found this info to be very helpful but.......keep in mind, it is not the actual Porsche code.
Now, a shop that has a Porsche Systems Tester 2 may not even have Porsche Codes (something I do not fully understand)......unless it has something to do with paying Porsche a monthly service or subscription fee.......I believe the newer PIWAS computer that came out last year costs dlrs around $1300./mo.
If anyone can elaborate on this, please do.
