Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

For some reason smog centers will record that lite cel was reset by battery disconnect and they won't approve it.

agio-if you plan to smog someday-you'll need to get it reset by scan tool.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi folks,
I have a 2000 996 with 36,000 miles. The engine light
came on today; but the car is running fine. No leaks.
Knowing that I need to take her in; what do you folks
think can cause this. Any insight will be appreciated. I
don't want to be taken to the cleaner at the dealer.
Thanks,
Alan
OBD2 scanner sells as low as $100 at stores and a decent one that reads msg instead of just code is around $150. Most shop will scan it for $50 or free if you let them do the work after.
Check tightness of your gas cap. If still on, get the code and fix the part. Don't just ignore it.
My 2002 C2's "Check Engine" light came on, just when the engine started missing. 47K miles; turns out the plugs were worn out. $525 later, everything works fine.
My "check engine" light went on for no good reason whatsover. The computer read out was normal. My resourceful mechanic disconnect the battery and cable; drained the charge effectively making the car computer "reboot;" connected everything back and what do y'know...no more engine light...this was about 3 months ago...so far so good.

First thing you should do is to get the one tool everyone should have...a good scanner that will display all the important sensor readings. You can get a great one for less than an oil change at the dealer. Do a search and you'll see the brands some of us use.
