Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
A full electrical systems check (all lights, switches, gages, dials, etc)
Leading evidence: 'Check (all lights, switches, gages, dials, etc)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check (all lights, switches, gages, dials, etc)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Get down low and look at the panels and how they fit, look at the paint and check for differences in finish and clarity, smoothness, etc.

I'd also recommend doing a CarFAx report for about $20.00.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Gentlemen,
Long time Rennlister/PCA member looking or advice on a PPI for a '99
996C2, 30K miles, 6spd. I'm moving from the 993 ranks and have limited knowledge of what to look for in a 996. Many have said go with a '01 or newer but this '99 is a very fine car for a fair price.
Thanks,
A 99 is a good year...in fact, they're all good years!
I'd recommend using a known independent Porsche service center or the dealership of you choice.
You can expect to pay about $300-350 for a good PPI which will include, among other things:
A full electrical systems check (all lights, switches, gages, dials, etc)
A battery check with full system load and charging test
A compression check
A engine test, i.e., a general inspection, lines, fluids, oil and coolant leakage inspection
A fuel system check including all fuel hoses and fittings,
Tail pipe emissions check
Road test
Clutch
Fault code analysis
Transmission
wheel balance
Brakes
alignment
Cruise control
Instrumentation
Heater and AC and ventilation test
Body for cosmetics, rust, glass
I'd also recommend doing a CarFAx report for about $20.00. Its not the last word in things but it does give you another data point for you decision making, i.e., previous ownership, collision history, DMV activity an so on.
Really eyeball the car yourself. Get down low and look at the panels and how they fit, look at the paint and check for differences in finish and clarity, smoothness, etc. Try to get under the car and look for leaks espically coolant leaks onto the driver side tail pipe and the infamous, but not that big of a deal, RMS leakage (look where the engine mates to the transmission and see if there is any oil present). Drive it and follow your gut after you have all the factual input from the PPI.
Good luck...hope it works out for you. Post up a pic when you finally make your purchase...
Jim
