I've used degreaser(P21S Total Autowash) followed by rubbing alcohol to clean the chip before painting with great results.

i would recommend anyone concerned with patina to add the film to at least save the headlights.

Now i need to make a decision about replacing the bumper with the original or go with a ancy earo bumper.

i assume factory touch up paint is used for diy repairs?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hello everyone,
so it is happening. i drive my car as a dd. put clear bra on headlights, hood, and fenders. i did not do front bumper. car was perfect when i got it. well today i washed it and noticed a few rock hits on the bumper. bummer. on the other hand i cannot leave it sitting in the garage. i also told myself when the bumper gets road sandblast i will take it off and have it repainted. i know there will be more hits. on the other hand, wow love the pcar and coud not stand to leave it at home.
Mine is my dd and I love every minute of it. It does seem like every time I wash it I notice more chips on the front, even a few on the hood
Can't worry too much about it. I just try to give a bit of extra room for the cars in front of me on the road and hope for the best.
Mine is a summer DD, everytime i wash her i find something new and distressing.
As I track her quite often the amount of rubber all over the front including the windscreen,
wheel aches etc. But the worst recently happened when someone back into my front bumper with a trailer hitch and cut the front bumper.
Now i need to make a decision about replacing the bumper with the original or go with a ancy earo bumper.
Not to hijack the thread but when you love your car, you dont want anything to happen to it.
The first chips/scratches are the hardest. . .
FYI, I am a fanatic too! I have had good results on small chips with drcolorchip. On larger rock chips, I have also had good results with the Langka kit.
hi barn996,
hmm - patina. i think i can live with some patina. at least they are all of my doing.

Rock chips =patina, Mr. Porsche prefers owners with patina.

Personally I like patina on my birdbath but not on my car, I find touch up paint and fine paint brush works wonders and when I wash and wax my car it apply where needed.
Who ever owned my 04 40th before me took very good care of it or didn't drive it much - after a good wash & wax it is difficult to find the 3-4 small dimples on the front facia. It had 12K on it when I bought it 2 years ago - now has 19,500 - I think I am the one who added 2-3 out of those 4 chips :-)
i assume factory touch up paint is used for diy repairs? how do you best clean out the chips prior to paint application? soap and water? rubbing alcohol? fine toothbrush? cotton ball? q-tip? sorry for so many questions.
I am lucky my car is in black and Krylon paint from ACE hardware gloss works fine and I usually just wash the car first then do the touch-ups. I would not use alcohol and not sure where to get the exact touch up paint but have read it some where, maybe in the car detail section.
Search the concours section as there is great info on this topic posted there.
Basically you want to remove all dirt/wax build-up on the chip before using the touch up paint. I've used degreaser(P21S Total Autowash) followed by rubbing alcohol to clean the chip before painting with great results. You only need to clean the immediate area around the chip, don't go overboard rubbing isopropyl alcohol over the entire body panel.
I gave up keeping mine pretty. It looks great from a distance and after being detailed really shines but daily usage and tracking/autocrossing make it impossible to keep pristine. Plus the Savannah Beige interior does not hold up to daily usage so well.
That's how it goes though - I bought it to drive not to mount on my wall.
buzztt,
i did not do the bumper for a couple of reasons. first it is plastic, and is easily removed for painting (when it gets to that point). also, the bumper is a large piece and has many curves. i was not sure i could get if on without wrinkles or get it to lay flat. i did the clear bra install myself. started with the easy parts, hood, fenders, headlights. i would recommend anyone concerned with patina to add the film to at least save the headlights. i am a big fan of diy. worst thing that can hapen is you get to spend some time with your car, and if you find the film is not up to your standard, you just pull it off. i think headlights alone is well less than a hundred bucks.
