Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
87 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Folks -
Happy New Year.
I posted a couple of weeks ago about a car at my dealer, and did end up buying it.
2002 Carrera Coupe, 6 speed
Arctic silver, black leather
38k miles
Porsche factory remanufactured engine at 11,500 miles, due to RMS failure
headrest crests
Porsche floor mats
Litronics
Comfort package
larger steering wheel
no PSM
Here are some pics, so you know it happened.
That is a "SWEET" looking car... Luda & I had been looking at it to replace the loss of our 996 to the evils of track duty. Great job... Did you get Lee to throw in anything extra?
Welcome to the club mate. Beautiful ride and like others have said a great way to begin the new year. I bought mine in January of last year and still get a wicked grin each time I go for a drive. Any track days in your future?
Thanks for all the props, guys. I really appreciate it.
CWhaley - They were sticky firm at $27,900, but gave me a good deal on the 30,000 mile service (filters, plugs, brake fluid), and a programmed replacement key. Sales manager Terry, not Lee, ran the show on the negotiation. I think they were into the car for around $26,000, so it wasn't getting much cheaper. I live in BVille, also. Do you belong to the local PCA chapter?
I could not resist driving it around for a little while yesterday. Holy cow, do these cars get attention on the highway!!
I also have already managed to have a minor code brown moment. Accelerating hard away from a country intersection in second gear, an undulation in the road bumped the rear of the car up a little, and the tail went from due south to east southeaset in a hurry. Getting immediately off the throttle settled things right down, but a change of shorts was in order.
I don't like the rims that much, because I am not a chrome guy, but they are growing on me a little, and the cost of replacements will keep them out of reach for a season or two.
I'm 49 years old, and have wanted a 911 since 1978, when the 911SC was the car to have. 32 year wait. I am one lucky guy, and look forward to driving it in April.
You will only have ONE regret - that you will kick yourself for not doing it sooner.... dont worry we all have that exact same one !!
LOL @ brown out moment I hope ya figure out how to manage that part of the experience
As you drive it more you will realize that when the rear breaks loose, do NOT lift. Recipe for a quick 180. Ask me how I know. Do some AutoX and DE's learn your car when the weather gets better. Some might say driving in the snow makes you learn faster. Regardless....very glad your a happy Pcar owner!
We are members of the CNY region and would love to have you join us for our next event in Feb... It is a rally in Ithaca... drop me an email @
[email removed]
and I will get you the info. It is a nice car and (not worked with terry before) Lee has always been good to us. Feel free too reach out anytime.
Cheers

the first time I "came about" (closed track - autocross enviornment) I had no idea why.... took several more times to understand and teach my feet how to get that *** to follow the nose....you can invest a few days at skill building events and autocrosses and learn how to keep from needing to call your insurance agent and ask if you have coverage for a rental
glad it worked out....
Thanks, guys.
Just to be clear, the code brown resulted from (poor judgment) and accelreration in a dead straight line on a flat road. I may be mistaken, but I think when the rear end bumped up, torque steer got aholdt of me.....Anyways, I have smartened right up and "cooled it."
I am really interested in doing some DE, but have no intention of ever turning my car into a track rat, and do not want to beat the crap out of it. I will use the Search feature to find out, of course, but would like to do DE once or twice a season without changing tires and brake pads. I am guessing this is probably much less than ideal................
Great car, congratulations. You'll find that it's not just a car but a lifestyle.
The music threads around here kill me....the're are probably more folks here who would rather listen to exhaust than 'other' music!
A GREAT start to the new year!
Many of the CNY membership only do a few DE's per year as well as a few Autocross events. We welcome you to experience your car with us.... Either on track or on drivers to fun places. It really is a lifestyle!

I haven't turned the radio on yet!
I love how when you fire it up, the Lieutenant in the ECU professionally informs "Oil level measured. I will await further orders, sir."
I didn't want to say it, but the chrome wheels were my only issue w/the car too, the thin 5 spokes look much more appropriate on the car, and are a lot lighter (probably better brake cooling too). Anyway, indeed be sure to do some track events, they're a ton of fun and will make you appreciate your car as well as making you a better driver. The Porsche sport pads and good street tires should be fine for light track use, as well as every day driving. Anyway, congrats.
Congrats... I love the Arctic Silver & Black (why not it was my choice as well) Classic Porsche Coupe.
Check out the Local PSA and sign-up for Drivers Ed - very much worth the time & $'s.
PNWR has one coming up this next week-end ... but you are a bit to far away for that. I am sure that one of the East coast clubs will welcome you. One additional benefit of being an owner is the PCA - sign up soon and start to enjoy you C2 even more.
And P.S. - Check the date codes on your tires... Often low mileage P cars are sitting on 8 + year old rubber - which could / might account for the tail coming out?
Jacks911-
Thanks for checking in. Most appreciated. The PZeros were brand new in October 2010, when my local dealer took the car in. They are presently 99% of brand new..............I'll see if I can fix that....
congrats.
join Porsche Club of America. the NY regions are alot of fun.
then sign up for a driving event at Watkins Glen. you will never be the same.

+100 on the congratulations. Be prepared for sore cheeks as you find it impossible to wipe that sh*t eating grin off your face. I've had mine for 4 months now, and I still get excited every time I pull my keys off the hook and walk out to the driveway.
Gosh - I really do own one!!
larry
Nice car - I have one just like it.
A less chromey and less twisty set of wheel can be had for very little money, like $1K. I just saw set of 18" Carrera IIIs on the classified here. I use a set of 17" twists for winter wheels.
Code brown! - Been there and done that in my car a couple of times now, exactly as you describe it, get on the throttle hard maybe a bit of a turn and if the road drops then the rear of the car starts doing a kind of weird circular bounce thing. Nothing to do with lifting. I've decided its part of the 996 charm.
Car goes good though eh?
You can easily get those wheels powdercoated for very cheap, black looks very subtle on silver..i just bought an 02" with 38k engine replaced at 10k due to RMS as well, lol..bought it in San Fran..but had a few more options and upgrades- Great feeling, i love mine and look forward to driving it every morning when i wake up!
ps: get LED tail lights, make a huge diff and update the entire look, only $300 + $20 for a plug in relay to avoid using resistors so you dont get any error codes
since we made 4 pages and the "welcome mat" has been flown a while we can start picking it apart now
so I would suggest some silver bulbs in those blinker sockets to get rid of that anoying amber color
Congrats and welcome. As others have said here, if the tail starts to get loose, "don't lift!" There used to be a PCA guy selling t-shirts in the 80s with that on them. It is an old 911 adage...
Enjoy the new year and your new car!
ivangene-
Thank you for waiting four pages before setting upon me. I owe you.
"so I would suggest some silver bulbs in those blinker sockets to get rid of that anoying amber color"
- I'll do it. Is Newbie sent to the search dungeon, or can you just link me to a short bus style post describing the mod? I promise a DIY post with pictures...............
Also, and have your way with me over this, I have looked with the Search function, but sucked big time. Just ahead of the rear tires is a plastic, kinda rubbery small trim piece at the bottom of each rocker panel, looks like it protects against stone chips. One side is partially pulled out, and the other side is partially torn. I am planning to replace both, and would like to DIY it, with pictures documenting the glory of this super easy repair. Can you help a brother out?
CWhaley -
Go 'Bees!
You da Man, even though you are very sick with the racing disease.
My pocketbook dearly hopes not to become similarly afflicted.
I will PM you when the time comes. Thanks very much for the offer.
Regards-Mawgie
Don't do it Mawgie. Silver/white turn signal bulbs are mod that should have been retired in the late 90's along with pseudo-xenon "blue" headlamps. Clear turn signal lenses with amber bulbs is the way to go IMO.
I can't help you with replacing the mud flaps, but I had a cracked one on my car too. A friend at a body shop did the install. From what I understand, it is just a few easily accessible screws that hold them in, but you will have to pull back the wheel well liner to install them. The run about $75 ea. Which side of yours is cracked? If it is the drivers side, I will see if the body shop has my old one. It was in good shape, but I decided to replace both so one didnt' look newer than the other.
Hey but..... UH, shoot... DOH!!
wait I know!
SOMEONE was supposed to help me out here
-whew- thought I was stuck looking like a mo-mo US dork with no one to blame but myelf
BTW those silver bulbs cost like $10 and the "good" H4's cost like $400 PLUS paint and wiring
still I feel pathetic
yea, they are... when not lit they are silver (which makes them invisible in the clear lens) but when they are illuminated they are amber (or red / blue - other color options)
pretty subtle and cheap to do...
I just ordered the clear lenses, bumper plugs and key hole plug. My first changes. Bought mine in Nov 2010 with 16,800 miles. A garage queen in pristine condition with no mods.
Some of you P car veterans seem more casual about changes than a newbie like me.
I joined my local PCA and look forward to seeing what they've done with their cars.
Rennlist is great and I appreciate all the information / opinions.
yea, I am pretty sure.... I am the resident idiot (and when I dont show "someone" complains!)
some people have driven at me so many times I ask them if they ever have dreams where they run me over !!
Here are my first changes:
Bumper plugs
Keyhole plug
Clearside markers
Still looking at wheel and tire upgrades.
Got to take it out today.
Hard not to smile
We are required to have a front license plate in Illinois as well. Drove my Lexus SC300 for 12 years without one. Got two tickets for it on the same day. One was voided by the court. Still drove it with only one plate.
Don't think that I'm going to put a front plate on my 996 either.
larry
Yes we are required to have a front license plate in Califronia. The car also has tinted side windows and I left the clear bulbs in the side markers. All my cars have tinted windows. My Ford truck has a secret engine and a special guy that smogs it for me. Cost $200 to smog but worth it. Im a rebel!
BTW I bought these parts from Bumperplugs.com I thought the price was a little high but they seemed, from my research to be the right company to do busienss with. My experience from this one purchase was great. Perfect paint color match. Easy installation (plugs how card could it be) on the side markers and the parts came fast and that's whats important.
+1 for bumperplugs!

I got mine at xenonmods.com... but amazon now has em
Mawgie.... CNY region is having a club planning meeting on the 30th of Jan in Pennellville... right around the corner from us. The meeting will be with a full meal and snacks... Why not join us too meet the local P gang... PM me and I can get you the details.
Silver bulbs...
A buddy of mine had this idea, I can't take credit for it but he and I used silver spray paint and
lightly
dusted the stock amber bulbs. They still glow bright orange but disappear behind the lens just like the silver bulbs.
Easy and cheap...up here in Canada we have to either pay gross retail++ or mail order everything to WA state and make a trip to pick things up.
A set of proper silver bulbs are $30 up here!
CWhaley-
I'll shoot you a PM about the get together in Pennellville on the 30th.
That location is right in my wheelhouse.
Thanks for the heads up - Mawgie
