Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

28 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone know if all 996's had a positive battery connector in the fusebox? because mine does not have it. If the battery dies and the doors are locked, I can manually open the door (key), but it locks out the bonnet and the engine compartment, no power to open the lock. Problem for jump starting!

POST 2Original post

All 996's have this. Do you have the manual? Or post a pic of what your fuse box looks like. Others will chime in. Go Pack!

POST 4Original post

BTW - you naver showed us your car - PICS or BAN !! ON MKI's there is a cable, no need to jump start the hood - but we dont know what year your car is

POST 5Original post

It's under a cover w/the hood label on it; You can use the door catch on the chassis for the ground. Of course if your car doesn't have electric release for the hood/trunk, you won't need this...

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 8189571

On 2001 MK1's is when they went to the electric release.

POST 7Original post

Avitar looks like a 99/00 if he can't open the hood(dead battery) then it must be a 2000.Right?

POST 8Original post

in my defense - there was no avatar when i posted - and those headlights look amber to me - ala 99' that and I am 80% sure I am usually 65% wrong

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It is a 99 996 I took pics of the fuse block but, the photo file is to big to download, I will have to use my phone. More to come. Btw I didn't see a tab with a hood label on it, I saw this in my manual too, but for some reason I don't have one.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 8191969

99s do not need power to open the trunk, it's a manual lever.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's not a manual lever! I got locked out of the bonnet and the engine compartment this summer, because it's an electric release, it would not open. I had to backfeed power through the cigarette lighter to get enough power to release the levers.

POST 13Original post

My '99 has a manual release for the engine bay, electronic for the trunk. If you look in the manual on page 173, 99's can be jump started through the engine bay.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 8192712

???????Yes it is. The year car (MKI) did not have that feature. Regardless of the year you can also use the secondary emergency cable release. The frunk and the rear lid each have one. You might want to re-route the rear cable. It is buried under the left tail light and you can only get to it from the engine compartment. There are a few DIY's here for that.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks alot, I give the secondary e-release route a try, and check p. 173. thanks for the help.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 8192727

My 2000 has manual releases for both the front and back. There must have been options for electronic release in the early years.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 8193187

My understanding is that all '99s have manual releases for both...mine sure does. I doubt they'd make something like that an option, and if they did it would be detailed in the manual.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 8193343

That's strange, because when my battery died I tried to open the front with the release and it would not budge - and my car is a '99.

POST 19Original post

99-00 are 100% manual and cable operated, there was no option for "electric" operation. manual Release Power Release Any questions?

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 8193726

It's as easy as this: are you pushing a button or pulling a lever to open the trunk?

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 8193831

Actually, you "pull" the button as well

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 8193844

D'oh! When I typed that I was only thinking in terms of "mechanical" or "electrical" and none of that transferred into what I actually wrote!

POST 24Original post

Weird. Mine's a '99 (5-99 production date) and is manual front and rear.

POST 25Original post

Well you blew that theory! Great looking cars. What wheels are on the Aero? Me likey.

POST 27Original post

18" Techarts. Apology accepted . I just don't tell people what kind of cars I drive. When someone asks, I just say " a white car". The other two live at my house in Cali.
