Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Recently I have been contemplating the next step in getting my car the way I want it. As with everything else, money clearly comes into play.
To date I have a 2001 C4 with 19 OZ wheels, GHL exhaust and EVO CAI 30k miles and mechanically sound (fresh off her 30k service done by Body Motion in South Jersey). I have no intentions of putting the car on the track. Im more interested in its appearence and keeping her as a garage queen/weekend toy.
I know I want my end result to be a factory Aero car lowered onto those 19s.
My dilemma is sorting the order to do these projects without the car looking silly in between projects
Due to costs, I have broken it out into 4 projects with my guestimated pricing for parts and labor
1 Paint and install aero kit sans the Rear Spoiler - $5000
2 Paint & Install Rear Spoiler - $3000
3 Lower the car - $1100
OR Do I just try and sell the car and upgrade to an S with factory Aero?
IYHO what order should I complete these projects??
Thx in advance
Lower first...should have been done even before the wheels IMO. Not only do you get visual impact from it but it makes the driving experience better too.
I would go in this order just because you get the most out of the mods.
3 – Lower the car - $1100 - sell stock to offset this upgrade.
1 – Paint and install aero kit sans the Rear Spoiler - $5000
2 – Paint & Install Rear Spoiler - $3000
As for the upgrade to a "S", MK1 aeros are the nicest looking and rare compared to other aeros. Its a personal preference question.
Wings and sideskirts can go OEM replica. Bumpers needs to be OEM. I think Chad was selling his sideskirts a while ago.
I would not mix techart and Porsche OEM on your car if you are looking to put a Taco wing on it.
how about saving your cash and wait for the 997 to go down in price add this to your trade in price.....Just kidding
I just thing that 9100 dollars is a lot of money. I converted my front into a 02 and replaced the rear bumper for turbo put on side skirt (this all including painting) and lowered H&R for about 6k sold the old fenders. bumper and headlights for about 1800 bucks...so only spend 4500 dollars....which was still too much according to my wife.
unless your car has something so unique that attracts you to it, i would save the cash and buy yourself a newer model. imo does not make alot of sense spending 10k on a seven year old car. be patient and look around. there are many great examples of newer 996 and 997 models that can be purchased at reasonable prices. good luck to you..
Hey Manny
I get you point but I have to consider 2 things.
1 - I know my car is mechanically sound and thats comforting given potential RMS issues with 996s
2 - Selling can be quite a hassel and trading it in will be a rip off. Besides if I'm going to upgrade , its going to be to a 997 "S" which means an additional $30k not $10K
Dominic - I went through the same dilemma and decided to go the mod route and keep the car longer... when you have a good car it makes little sense to part with it.. much as a C2S sounds tempting.
I did the side skirts and bumper first and am just about to add the rear spoiler. Do not under any circumstances to the spoiler without the front bumper, as it will impair the handling of the car.
Doing it piecemeal helped control the cost, but in the end I realized that I should have just gone with the entire aero kit from the start, as sourcing the parts can take a lot of time and energy. Getting then at lower cost can take time. I'f I'd bought the entire kit in one batch from Sunset Porsche I probably would not have paid that much more than what I've paid to date... that being said, it all depends on how much you spend on paint and installation.
Thanks everyone for your insight.
I just got a quote for $1100 (parts and Labor) for a stage 1 upgrade. They said it will lower the car about 1" front and rear and give a 20% stiffer ride
Good point. Besides I'm probably too impatient to wait. i think Im best off saving up and doing the entire aero in one shot.. Body motion in NJ quoted me $7500 parts, paint & install for the entire OEM kit
IMHO that is 2x more than I paid... I started collecting parts over the winter time.
Front new bumper $950 ... dps
Taco wing used $900 ... ebay
Side skirts new $750 .... dps
Paint $1000
installed it myself... very easy. I can help you put it on.. if you want.
Be careful on the suspension upgrade. If you just replace springs so it sits lower, it may shorten your shocks' life and change your handling. Search this board on suspension upgrade so you get the correct set up.
Your shop seems pricy. I would shop around. I paid $1850 shipped for PSS9s and $750 for installation which included 2 alignments because I lowered it twice.
Isn't this the reason we are all on this board? If you're like me (and I suspect a lot of our other members) mod the car! When I looked at a 997, my problem was not buying the car, but the $20k extra to get it like I wanted.
There's deals to be had. I paid $600 for a new ROW M030 and also got a deal on some wheels and tires from a RL member. You may want to check DPS who also paint factory aero parts.

No wonder you have to think twice with the prices you get. Change shops cause they're after you. Look around the net and you'll be able to get a close to new PSS9 or 10 for a little over 1K. As for aero, check ebay or other places but I'm sure you can get the entire kit for 2K plus paint.
Good luck
Just ordered the OEM aero kit from Dayton at DPS
They had it on ebay as a OEM front bumper and skirts with factory replica rear deck lid.
Im looking at 3 body shops in the area and any feedback or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Madison Avenue Coach Works - in Dumont NJ
Protosport - Pompton plains - NJ
Body Motion - redbank - already quoted me $2000 - (seems high)
Getting the best price for parts is one thing but as for paint, I would go with recommendation rather then price. I have learned the hard way with a ''cheap'' paint job. Especially with the front bumper that kept flaking off.
I was very pleased with the parts that I got from DPS (I ordered mine painted). In fact I'm currently waiting for my rear spoiler to arrive from him. He's not the fastest in the world and he's always full of excuses as to why he doesn't deliver on promises, but he does eventually deliver.
I emailed him last night waiting for the excuse of the week as to why I've not recieved shipment notification when he promised it last friday (for the 3rd consecutive week). When I ordered the parts he promised delivery in 2 weeks... I'm on week 5 and counting right now. He promised 3 weeks on the orginal aero kit delivery and I believe that took 8 weeks.
It will be interesting to see what excuse he comes up with this time for the part not having shipped yet... and he wonders why there are so many people on Rennlist that get frustrated with his tardy delivery practices - it really taints the good things that he does.
I went with the unpainted. Grey is a tough color to get right and this way if im not happy I can go to the source and have it fixed. Besides maybe unpainted will be a quicker delivery
You made a smart move. The great thing about white is that you can color match in your sleep. I would not have him paint a metallic part without having access to the rest of the car.
As for delivery speed, well, my understanding is that the delays are usually the fault of the painter - certainly that was the case for my last and current order (the latest that I'm being told is that the painter is having health issues and the part will be in my hands next week). We'll see.
Good luck and hopefully we'll get our part installed at the same time and can post photos together.
