I returned the Michelin PS4S and installed the Conti DWS06+.
Leading evidence: 'Install conti dws06+' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'combination of road surface, tread pattern , suspension/spring weight/design' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check against gps' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I do know it is from the rear since I replaced the rear tires first, noticed the hum and then changed the front tires (hum still there).

Just replaced the noisy P-zeros with new Michelin Pilot 4S Tires.

Suggestion
Anyhow, not having a pressure gauge with me to test the tire pressure and close to my destination I decided to let the tires cool overnight and see if the hum appeared in the morning..
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just replaced the noisy P-zeros with new Michelin Pilot 4S Tires. 36psi/44psi.
Between 20 to 40 mph and 72 to 74mph there is an annoying hum in the cabin that I do not believe was present with the old noisy feathered tires.
I do know it is from the rear since I replaced the rear tires first, noticed the hum and then changed the front tires (hum still there).
Read a lot of threads. Perhaps wheel bearing--but I don't think the speed behavior matches.
This feels like a tire tread resonance issue.
Dropping the rear pressure by 4 psi did not help.
Looking for advice before I return these for Conti DWS06
Thank you!
I returned the Michelin PS4S and installed the Conti DWS06+. The tire ringing/singing at 43 and 72 mph is now gone. Whew!
The PS4S tires sizes were: 225 40/18 and 285 30/18
The Conti tires sizes are now: 225 45/18 and 285 35/18.
The slightly taller aspect ratio is probably not ideal from an aesthetic and ultimate performance standpoint. The ride does feel less harsh, a taller side wall helps in this regard.
Just posting in case anyone else experiences the tire hum/ring of the PS4S. It was not something I wanted to live with for the next 6 years.
Like others have said, the DWS06+ is a quiet tire.
I actually see no down side in the 285 35 18 Speedometer error is if anything reduced on mine checking against GPS. Rim protection, ride improvement, and prices all better.
Yeah, it will definately be a softer ride. I am running a set of 235x40x18 and 285x35x18 Michelin All Season 4s on my second set of wheels. Nice for cruising around town over the bumps. It sure is alot of air/diameter and doesn't do much for handling. But it's good to have a set of wheels/tires for the cold weather months.
Conti are definitely a better ride
plus I prefer them over the Pirelli and Michelin they last longer and don’t dry rot as fast as the others
every set of Michelin I had showed cracks after 4 years
they also offer better foul weather driving
I have PS5 tires on my car and they will squeal surprisingly easily. When hot, a very slight turn will create a squeal that's audible with the windows open and a wall or other sound-reflecting structure on your side.
I think this happened to me with these tires. Recently on a hot day, after a hot run, I was hearing a weird whine/hum. I had my tires at what others have suggested around 32F 39R, but after a canyon run, the hot pressures were way too high. I have deflated them quite a bit, and haven't heard that odd resonance anymore.
Just had a new set of PS4S fitted in the same sizes and also have the hum at the exact same speeds you describe. Car is a 40th AE. The tires are otherwise quiet, but the hum comes on and is maddening at those two speed ranges (far worse at 70-74).
What gives here? Manufacturing defect from Michelin?
Something specific to the 996 in these sizes? Bizarre.
May have to ditch these tires as you did. Only have done around 400 mostly highway miles on them, so may give them a chance to wear in a little more, but long term this is unacceptable to what I consider a street tire compared to something more dedicated like a Cup2 or RE71rs.
Probably a combination of road surface, tread pattern , suspension/spring weight/design
All road surfaces are not equal
All tire tread patterns are not equal
All suspension/spring weight/design are not equal
Everything has a harmonic resonance frequency that it will get exited/vibrate at and when two or more of them converge the results can be interesting and/or unpleasant
100% And probably an inadvertent endorsement for N Spec. The prior PS2 N Spec tires I had were whisper quiet, but I wanted to upgrade to Michelins latest and greatest. Oh well.
Interesting observation. I recently attended a PCA tech session and one of the talks was about vehicle-specific Michelin tires. It was illuminating.

I had this happen as well on a recent drive, in a 981 GTS W/ 20" stock wheels. The wheels had been filled to spec @ 33 PSI cold, all four corners. During the drive, the ambient air temp went up to 90 and the tire pressures went up to 39/40 PSI. I started to notice the same hum or resonance which would start as imperceptible and then grow in vibration (it could be felt through the steering wheel) and audible low hum, to a peak and then fade back out. Overall, this would take about a 1.5 to 2 seconds and then repeat every three or four seconds. So like a slow pulse that would fade in and out with a frequency of 4 times in 10 seconds or something.. Putting it in neutral had no effect, so it was either tires, (too slow for any wheel unbalance) perhaps bearings (some complex system where a bearing could be failing, starting up a vibration that is then countered by some other force (rotational mass of the wheel?) and repeats , or the CV's or differential... Anyhow, not having a pressure gauge with me to test the tire pressure and close to my destination I decided to let the tires cool overnight and see if the hum appeared in the morning.. Sure enough, with the wheels cold again back @ ~34psi, and the ambient temperature much lower around 70, the resonance was not there. I had a meeting at RENNLINE, and Colin was generous enough to let me take his tire pressure gauge on my trip back... when the tires heated back up and the resonance started again, I pulled off the interstate and dumped 5 PSI out of all the tires, and the resonance stopped... so there's definitely something with the
Michelin Pilot 4S NO
tire pressure, and a resonance when overinflated.. Perhaps not when new, but when certain wear patterns appear.
By way of update, I drove my PS4s for a season and am now on RE71RZs. Rather than a hum at certain highway speeds with the Michelins, the new Bridgestones now hum at all speeds. Problem fixed! (sarcasm).
I guess moral of this story is, if you want quiet highway tires, youre going to have to sacrifice some performance.
