I just spent $2,400 to have a the following replaced/fixed: ODO dash bulb, window regulator motor, reverse switch, and had the oil changed since it was already there.

There is also an independent Porsche repair shop in North Charleston/Summerville who may have some on the lot you can look at, or who may have leads.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Whats up! Im a teenage Porsche enthusiast looking for someone to source a 996 carrera coupe in good condition. I live in Charleston South Carolina and I get my license soon. If you have a lead on one in the southeastern US please message me.
What is the fair market value on 1999 71k miles Arctic silver/Metropole blue IMS, rear main, clutch, water pump, tires, Bilstein all done. Very nice 5/98 early build 6 speed car.
Good luck with your search. Everybody's definition of excellent condition is different. Lets start with understanding if you going to handle the servicing of the car or do you have an indy?
This is my first car and there are many independents in where I live. I will use independents for a while, but I am planning to learn as much about 911s as I can so in the future I can service it myself.
Well, I'm going to say it. I know you want a 996 for your first car, but it's not the best car for a new driver. There is a learning curve when it comes to driving and owning a 911 when your sixteen will most likely get you in trouble, if you are anything like me, the front end of my Mom's Mazda found an oak tree to kiss while I was doing things I shouldn't of been doing. I crashed hard, total V in the front of the car. My Dad made me pay him back for the car over the next 1.5 years.
I would suggest something with a lower power to weight ratio that has a lower value. If you crash it for any reason, or curb it, or anything else, it won't be a big deal. Best of luck!
Not to discourage you, but a 20+ year old Porsche 911 is not a great first car for a teen. Aside from power and handling characteristics that are not new driver friendly, the price of parts and repairs is much higher than your average car. If you must then look into a base 986.
Good to see. As many if the guys suggested, you want to approach buying and owning a 996 with your eyes wide open. They are exceptional cars that can be dependable daily drivers, weekend drivers and track cars.
But unless you buy a 996 that has been well serviced through its life with parts that have been properly refreshed/upgraded when they should have been refreshed/upgraded, you are looking at quite a bit of money that you will have to spend on the car to bullet proof it.
The best option you have is to pay up for one that has had everything done to it, including a refreshed engine, suspension, and exhaust, with an interior and exterior that is in good shape. While it may cost you $40k, the money that you will need to spend on refresh items which may run as much as $10k for the engine, $10k for the suspension and $10k for the exhaust, is already baked into the purchase price.
The last thing you want is a car that limps around town. You show me a $20-25k 996 and i will show you an inevitable bill of $30k to keep it running in top form. Its not the cost to buy a Porsche thats high, its the cost to keep it running. So make sure your old man knows this.
If your dad is cool with it, then go for it. You never know how long you have on this earth. Nevertheless, make sure you study hard amd stay highly motivated to make something of your life so you can support an addiction to your 996. It certainly is worth it.
Here is a perfect example of a 996 that recently had a 4.1 Slakker/Hartech engine rebuild. The previous owner bought it with a failed engine. Hence the rebuild. He spent a ton of money with the rebuild plus plenty of refreshed parts. It sold for $40k which was what it cost for Slakkers work alone.
These deals don't come around every month, and obviously many didnt recognize it since it only went for $40k. Instead, many would rather pay $25k for one amd put another $30k into it to refresh it, which is $55k in total, not counting $30k+ for an eventual engine rebuild putting the total at $85k.
The point here is to not be afraid to pay up for quality and service history. It saves money in the long run.
IMHO, if this isnt in your budget, then hold off buying one until you are making the big bucks after starting your professional career.

Yeah, I totally agree. My Dad and I are on the same page that if it works out, Ill get one thats reliable. I dont want to have to worry about major issues. I just think this is best because its my first car. I know it will be work, but I want to get used to taking care of it without all the complications that comes with a classic 911 that hasnt been bullet proofed.
My soon-to-be wife would not care about the difference between the 986 or the 996, other than one has a drop top and that is more fun in the summer. My Mk6 GTi is better since it has Carplay. Don't buy a car for girls, buy it for yourself.
I am about an hour south of Charleston, but get up there about once a month for appointments and visits. I have a 1999 C2 with a tiptronic and 56K miles. I have done all the mods needed to fight off oil starvation, etc. and it runs like a top. Has PCCM+ installed so has Carplay and Navigation and bluetooth. If you are interested in seeing what a good example should look like, I would be happy to try to meet up with you when I am headed to Charleston. It might help you develop a baseline as to what you want to target in terms of overall vehicle condition, etc.

This is not what I wanted to write because I fully endorse a 996 being a first car / daily driver. But IMO there is not a world where you can own/drive a 20+ year old car and not worry about major issues.
I will tell you that just in the regular course of driving (I daily drive mine) I accumulate probably ~$7,500 a year in maintenance cost and I have not yet had a "major" issue. It's a fun car at the same price point as a new Honda Civic...but the ongoing costs are logarithmically higher.
Reliable is one thing (motor and trans doing their jobs), random issues not related to drivability is another. I just spent $2,400 to have a the following replaced/fixed: ODO dash bulb, window regulator motor, reverse switch, and had the oil changed since it was already there. Other preventative maintenance was around $4k (IMSB, clutch, AOS), then $1k+ for tires, 6 month interval oil changes, etc. This was all between the mileage of 27k to now 36k, 9 years in my possession. There was also a good bit of various maintenance done during previous ownership.
I'm in Charleston and would be happy to meet with you and your father over lunch to go over anything experience wise of 996 ownership. Shoot me a PM if you have any interest and we can set something up.
In my opinion you are looking at the wrong car for a 16 year old. Like many I learned my lesson and wrapped my moms Mercedes around a tree when I was 17. I couldn't handle the over steer situation I put myself in by going way too fast. I learned to drive on a 996 when I had my learners permit and when I finally got the chance to drive that thing the way I wanted....I was terrified. Way too much car for someone just learning to drive. The insurance rates will be insane as well. I would look at Macan as a first Porsche.
Hah! Definitely sportier. There is always the Subaru BRZ.
I love the idea that the OP is starting young with a 996. But we were all his age once, and know all of the cars we wrecked at that age.
Best advice I can give regardless if he starts with a 996 or not, is to get him out to a local teen driver school on how to handle a car. Many of the PCA, BMW, AUDI regions have them.
I think you are out of your mind to buy a 996 Porsche as a first car. Wishes and wants don't equal your age & Reality. Perhaps you are exceptional, but I don't believe it. "Dad Help" doesn't cut it, Just my $.02.
YMMV
Have you talked to an insurance company? MIne wont even talk to anybody under 28 on a 996..
The premiums will be high.. Also some companies block any family member under a certain age
from driving a 911 unless the driver is the primary on the insurance..
I sold a 911 a few years back to a guy that was 24,, He thought it would be easy..
I had warned him but he didnt think 5 speeding tickets would matter... <omg>
If I were you I'd buy a Miata. And do a ton of track days. A 911 tolerates NO mistakes.
Miatas are just twitchy enough to learn sports car handling and cheap enough if you bend it up you just go buy another..
He already bought a 911 from me and yes he and I negotiated with his father on speaker phone, they did get an insurance quote and it was $4000 a year cheaper than his brothers Tesla. A 996 is definitely not hard to drive. A 16 year old first car being a 911 to me is very cool.
I cant believe the negativity on this thread.
because you couldnt make it happen doesnt mean this young man cant.
I think we all must have known one or two kids who owned a special vehicle back in the day.
In my case it was a twenty-something neighbor who owned a 1969 Corvette.
Provide the knowledge and point out the pitfalls to the kidbut stop with the lecturesIMHO
I don't know who their insurance company is but they are getting screwed,
My Tesla Model Y LR/With Boost is about a 100 bucks < my 911 even with my
eligable daughter on the coverage.
I spent most of the last 25 years helping new drivers get into racing (SCCA/NASA?Conference)
and Even the ones with massive karting experience seldom last with a Porsche. They are never as good
as the guys who started small (Miata or Spec racer Ford) and worked up to the high power car..
I hope he has fun, and enjoys the experience..
There are reasons you start out in a Cub or a Cessna 150 and not a Leer Jet to learn to fly. (LOL)
G'day!
Or a Z3 to have the german spirit in the car... On the other hand, what would we do if we had the chance to turn back time? 911? Boxster as a cheaper alternative? Yolo
Just wanted to let you guys know that I was able to find a perfect condition arctic silver and metropole blue 1999 carrera from SHooks. PPI with perfect cylinders/no bore scoring. IMS bearing replaced by prior owner. Mr. Hooks has been awesome to work with and a huge help. I'll post more pictures on delivery. Thanks
Recently some rodents got into the engine as a consequence of parking it outside. Took it to the shop and the engine now sounds amazing. I also got my drivers license and get lunch with my friends all the time. I love driving manual and can't wait to be driving it to school next year. Couldn't be more happy with it
The mice can be a big pita with the wiring in these cars. If u have any interest in fixing issues on your own just speak up. U may not have a lot if experience fixing cars but a bunch of us can help. U will get a lot of satisfaction and save money at the same time.
