I run a real similar line to you at the glen, except I'm flat on the floorboard thru the esses, didn't happen overnight or with street tires.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Pretty nifty site. Been playing with my fathers day gift, a DVD video camera, and looking for places to upload. I uploaded a 365 MB file this afternoon, and they had it up in a few hours! They degraded the quality, probably cuz it would take forever to download a file that big, but it still looks decent. Next, I'll try to upload a 3GB file, the whole run, heh-heh-heh Here's a link: Watkins at Google . Comments about videos, equipment, upload sites, drivng, weather, whatever. It's been a slow couple of days for me.

POST 2Original post

Nice palting, I'm actually heading up there on the 8th, can't wait, my favorite track. How did you like the glen with the x73? Pretty tame adanced run group, who were you running with, pda?

POST 4Original post

you are making it look very easy!!! hardly changing gears?? it is only the lotus in front of you that is making me nervous, with his extensive braking......or is it your driving style that make everybody else look antsy??

POST 5Original post

cool video, may I ask what camera mount you are using? mounted to rollbar?

POST 6Original post

Interesting enough I saw a 996, Elise, and Ferrari racing around South Beach last week.

POST 7Original post

Palting - Very nice vid! As others have said, your driving style/skills make the other drivers look bad!

POST 8Original post

Nice Video Palting. It is strange to watch a video from the same type car at a track you have driven a fair bit. I caught myself talking to myself while watching the video. Specifically, I am fairly fast through the 8-10 section. Once, another 996 driver in my old run group complimented me on how fast I take T9 (he was faster through T8). He was following me, and I took T9 a little too hot. As I was drifting out at the track out point and coming inches from the blue armco, I kept telling myself "it's just a mirror, it's just a mirror, it's just a mirror" while fighting the urge to pinch the car or back off the gas. Here is a video from the glen that shows slightly different lines. I am sure you will find it interesting: http://caicos.globat.com/~gtc-motors...ideos/2006-05%

POST 9Original post

Great video and a great source of other P-car videos! Thanks!

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It was with ARPCA, Chris. Nice bunch of guys, a bit strict on the rules. There are a few radical guys in the run group, but we were runnunning at pretty much the same speed so I never caught them on video. I didn't bring my lap timer, but I was playing tag with a guy that had one. He said we were running about 2:13-15. The Elise was quick, and the driver liked to throw that cars back end around. Not bad for a car that is at most half the cost of a 911. There was actually a lot of shifting going on. At least, compared to my first time at the Glen. This was only my second trip up there, and I had the fortune of having an expereinced TT driver ride with me and show me the AWD line the day before during the open lapping day. I short shift before turn 2 to 4th gear or go to 4th just after the left hand kink at the esses, then hit the rev limiter just after the right hand kink at the esses and have to shift to 5th, and hit about 130-140 before the braking zone. I do cheat the downshift and go directly back down to third before the bus stop. If I push it, I hit the rev limiter again and need to upshift to 4th at the laces of the boot, then down shift for the toe. At the toe, if there is traffic, I go down to 2nd for the uphill. If alone at the toe, I keep the speed up so Im still in the torque range on 3rd going up the hill, then 4th as I crest the hill, back down to third for the heel , and stay on third until the front straight. I'm planning on getting external A/V feed so the engine sounds can be heard rather than the wind. It's an I/O mount on a harness bar, Moogle Thanks for the compliments, guys. It was wet earlier in the day, so I was still in the "be smooth or you're dead" mindset. It helped . TD, the link ain't working, man. I am interested in seeing it.

POST 11Original post

Wow, Palting, that is some great stuff. I really liked the lines you were taking. As for the Elise, that must be one light stable little car because he was taking a lot of corners late and some of his lines were really high on the apex.

POST 12Original post

Not really. I don't know the driver, but it appears that he has a fundamental hatred for apexes, whether they be early or late. He just doesn't like 'em one bit. It's a good thing Palting drives his own car rather than following others. If he had followed the lines of the Lotus the extra weight of the 996 might have led him into a "blue" period.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That was the Elise's favored line. He liked to braked late, go deep, throw the back end around on turn-in, then oversteer to a late apex. He probably thinks it gets him a higher exit speed to make up for his lower HP . I think I also pushed him into some errors when he tried to get away as I got close. TD, your link won't link.

POST 14Original post

Sounds like a good excuse to me As you know, I drive a low HP car and, for the most part, I think the line doesn't vary too much. The best way to get better exit speed in a low HP car is to "forget" you have brakes! It is sorta like the saying for money: "The best way to save money is not to spend it in the first place." On the track, the best way to be fast is not to slow down in the first place The "only" place I can think of where you "might" want to take a very different line due to low HP would be coming up the hill in the boot, but I still think hitting the apex would be helpful. In fact, IIRC, John H. -- redline man -- hugs the inside of that corner rather than going way out like the elise. If the Elise driver is good at controlling his car, then imagine how quick he would be on a better line. I suspect you know the guy so you are being more polite than I am. I am the same way, but keep in mind that I am only kidding around as well. You are also probably right about the fact that he was driving his mirrors. I NEVER do that My only point is that if you don't use all the track, someone else will. I can see apexing corners early in a low HP car and carrying your momentum, but giving up 1-3 feet at every corner seems like, well, a waste. sorry about the earlier link, try this: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...nt#post3098803 P.S. I agree with you that ARPCA is a great bunch to run with. Very friendly people.

POST 15Original post

Wow, they compressed your 365 megs to 732k...Pretty impressive video for under a meg.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Don't know how they did it, but it is impressive for less than a meg. I tried it with Roxio VideoWave, and anything less than a meg looked like a postage stamp. I tried mpeg2, mpeg 1, wmv, Divx, AVI. If I made it bigger and still less than a meg, it looked like there was Vaseline smeared across the lens. I've got a run on video where the track is wet. It's about 1Gb. We'll see what they do with it, or if they gag on it.

POST 17Original post

2:13/15's are pretty damn good times. I run a real similar line to you at the glen, except I'm flat on the floorboard thru the esses, didn't happen overnight or with street tires. If I hit teens, low 20's on the lap and 130ish on the back straight, it's a good day.

POST 18Original post

I run a real similar line as both you, Chris, and Palting at the Glen as well. In the 996 towards the end, I was flat on the floorbard from the exit of T1 all the way to the bustop (and actually on S02s). I was hitting 130-135 very briefly before the bustop. It actually became harder to hit that once I installed the fixed rear wing, but the car felt soooo much better and more stable. I am taking the '44 to the Glen at the end of June/beginning of July. I cannot wait to see what kind of time I can pull of in that car. Despite its lack of horsepower, I am finding that I am shaving 5-8 seconds off my times at many tracks. Since the Glen supposedly is such a HP track, I wonder what will happen in the '44 . . . I am worried about the hill. Palting, I just realized that I didn't say it before, but of course your video shows great driving. I meant that when I said "nice video", but I realize now you might have thought I meant the a/v stuff P.S. Did you get to see Colin's ("38D's") video?

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

On the video, it doesn't seem like I'm WOT at the esses because I kept running into traffic either after turn 1 or at the esses itself. On the first day, I would "breathe" at the hump just before the left hand kink at the esses, and again around the right hand kink to keep from hitting the rev limiter. By the afternoon, with the experienced TT driver riding shotgun and egging me on, the pedal is to the metal on 4th gear just before or at the apex of turn 2, and stays there until red line just before the right hand kink and upshift to 5th, then hard brake at about the 500-400 mark. I could consistently hit 130+ before the brake zone. TT driver said I hit 140+, but I think he was just being encouraging. There is a 2 year gap between my first trip to the Glen and this second one. There have been a lot of DE's in between, plus the X73 and MPSC. I definitely felt a lot more confidence this second time to the Glen, and the suspension and tires were a major contributor. I think the biggest one, though, was the guy who I trust, sitting on the passenger seat, going "Go! Go! Go!" . Watkins is definitely an HP track, TD, simillar to the full track at VIR. The esses and the hill after the toe will be your challenge. You can probably catch us 996's at the heel and the reverse camber left, keep the momentum going into the last two turns and have a passing chance at the front straight. Maybe .

POST 20Original post

Ah hell, Palting, there is no sense hiding how competitive I am. Your video time just gave me a little "goal" to meet or exceed while at the Glenn! Nothing like a little inspiration! Someday hopefully we will finally get to meet face-to-face

POST 21Original post

I wasn't referring to the driver, I was referring to the Lotus. As bad as the driver was, the "Lotus" made up for it.

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I still remember your earlier posts and vids with the targa, TD . Then you jumped right in to racing. I'm a little slower in getting into it. I finally bought a 2 layer Sparco racing suit and gloves . Don't know if I have the cojones to actually wear it to DE, heh-heh. Now, if I can only not get claustrophobic with a full face helmet, I'm all set. I'm sure we'll meet up somewhere. I look forward to sharing a track with you. You looking to buy an Elise, WFO? It's a neat little track toy, get's lot of attention. There was also a federalized Exige there, but it was in the novice run group. The driver, however, had a full racing suit .

POST 23Original post

Palting, IMHO, don't bother with wearing a racing suit to a DE. The risks that you will get overheated and dehydrated far outweigh the risk that you will be in a fire. Sure it is a balance, but, having tried both approaches, I can tell you that I prefer to reserve the monkey suit for the real races. Now, a full face helmet is another matter altogether. In a recent race, I was hit in the face by a marble. Had I not had a full faced helmet, I assure you it would have left a mark. The same thing can happen at a DE, although you appear to be a little more polite with respect to following distance when someone doesn't get their hand out right away! Do you have a race seat, 6 point harness and head and neck restaint system yet? IMO, those are far more important than the racing suit. The seat and the harness also make it much, much easier to drive. Having become spoiled in the race car, I refuse to drive the Targa on the track without them, and since I do not want to create a frankenstein car out of the Targa, I will never take it to the track again. No rush on the racing . . . although it is incredibly fun and addictive

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have the Shroth 6 points and the tequipment roll bar. Saving up money for the GT3 seats. Until I can put all three together, I'm still using the stock sport seats and the 3 points. The GT3 seat fund, however, keeps getting decimated by the need for tires . Here's another video for anyone interested. It's a lot longer, since I wanted to see how long it woud take to upload a realy large file. Thi was just under 1 Gig oiginally. I didn't start another thread for it, since it's just a bunch of guy's tiptoeing around the puddles after the rain at Watkins. The racing guys sat this run out. We were all slow, but I believe I was the least slow . AWD rocks in the wet!! Enjoy: After the rain

POST 25Original post

What exhaust do you run? I'm gonna try a vid this thursday up there, I do have a really good one from last yr at a PDA glen event, me spanking my buddies viper and a m3, just can't ever get it up(you know what I mean).

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's PSE, open all the time. I have to get an external mike, so the sound of the wind doesn't overwhelm the exhaust sound at speed. Yup, I know what you mean. Had to slice and splice to get it up.
