I use Performance Friction 97s, but others swear by pagids, while yet others swear by Hawks.

That said I could easily run a few hard laps and start to have issues, but as long as I never drove the car over 8/10's the stock pads were fine.

Suggestion

I have found that Pagid Orange pads and ATE Super Blue are very good compromise components for street/track use (I consider them a compromise, because there are better track pads, but they sacrifice cold friction and can be rotor aggressive and there is better fluid for a much higher price).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

First an introduction. I have been observing for a while and am now the excited new owner of a 2003 996 C2 coupe (arctic silver, black interior, 30,000 miles, CPO) --Pictures soon, and yes I still have the orange side lights. : I plan to attend a DE at Watkins Glen and am curious if newbies are fine with stock break pads or if fade is an issue on 996's in the novice class. I don't plan on making modifications until I develop a good feel for the car and my limits but I could see pads being something that is better done sooner than later. A

POST 2Original post

If this is your first DE, you will probably be fine in your stock brake pads. HOWEVER, newbies tend to boil brake fluid faster than intermediate and advanced drivers due to the way they brake, and overbrake. Since it is so incredibly easy to swap out brake pads, why don't you just pick up a set? I use Performance Friction 97s, but others swear by pagids, while yet others swear by Hawks. You are taking the right approach by not making any mods yet. Our cars are INCREDIBLY capable. You will probably reach your limits before you reach your car's limits. Have fun. Be warned, though, this sport is awfully addictive. Look what happened to me! BTW, when are you going to the Glen? I am going there soon . . . Also, check out Palting's video. It will be good to prep you.

POST 3Original post

You should be "ok" with the stock pads. However be aware you can wear through a set of stock pads in about 2 track days and the stock fluid can be boiled with track use (don't ask how I know this ). I have found that Pagid Orange pads and ATE Super Blue are very good compromise components for street/track use (I consider them a compromise, because there are better track pads, but they sacrifice cold friction and can be rotor aggressive and there is better fluid for a much higher price). Be aware this is a slippery slope. Next thing you know you'll want new rotors, an upgraded suspension, track wheels, track tires, six point harnesses, a harness bar, etc, etc........ Good luck.....you're going to love it!!

POST 4Original post

Agreed. I've been doing DE's for several years and upon getting my 996 a few weeks ago immediatly took it to a DE in stock form to feel the car out a bit. The only thing done was fresh Motul 600 brake fluid. I was very impressed with how well the stock pads held up compared to other cars I've had in the past with stock pads. That said I could easily run a few hard laps and start to have issues, but as long as I never drove the car over 8/10's the stock pads were fine. I'd say for a first timer you'll be good. Andy

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the helpful responses. I should be at the Glen June 19 and 20th. I can't wait.

POST 6Original post

Just to chime in: I took my '02 996 to Willow Springs for two days of DE a week after buying it, and I had no problems at all with the stock brakes in NASA HPDE 2. However, two weeks later I took it round a short track at Vegas Speedway and I got a long pedal pretty quickly because I was much more confident with the car. So, I think it depends on how hard you'll be using it. Why not take a spare set of pads with you? There will be plenty of people who will be happy to help you change out the pads if you need them. Enjoy! Simon
