For automotive use, I'd recommend a thermometer in dash vents with ac on full fan, lowest temp setting, recirculate on, all windows open, car in shade.

Suggestion

Some refrigerants, like 410a or the new 454a can 'fractionate', components can separate if only charging with gas, changing the Freon blend entering the ac system.

The hot water trick has been around since R-12 days, done it many times to get that last bit into the system, but one warning never dunk the can into hot water with the valve closed or leave it in the hot water with valve closed, witness one guy do the same and the can burst in his hand right when he removed the can from hot water, I had to run him to Emergency for multiple stiches, We outlawed the practice after that and went with 30 lbs bottles and heating blanket.

Suggestion

If you really want to test for leaks, after vacuuming the system for a couple of hours with a quality vac pump, close off both high and low side manifold wheels, turn off pump and exactly note low/hi side vacuum reading.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi The AC on my 99 has gradually been worse and stopped working. Almost no refrigerant left so I vacuumed and refilled the system. It hold vacuum for at least an hour with no leaks. however I can only get 20oz in, should be 30oz. Low pressure is 40psi, high pressure is about 200psi. Is this just likely my tools/cans/etc are bad? Or could this be something serious? AC blows cold with 20oz, maybe not like a new car but doable.

POST 2Original post

Quit while you are ahead! You had some left over before you started. And the real trick is to immerse the last can in hot water before you attempt to fill it. But at 40/200 PSI, I think you are good.

OK modify that to "immerse in warm water" coming out of the faucet, not boiling hot water.

POST 5Original post

Well, against all folk lore and popular internet believe, and many taught classes, to Charge Correctly with liquid is the way to go in above circumstances. it avoids problems of not emptying full can. Proper refrigeration practice allows for slow controlled charging with liquid refrigerant. In fact, you should always break a vacuum with liquid on hi side with comp off. Some refrigerants, like 410a or the new 454a can 'fractionate', components can separate if only charging with gas, changing the Freon blend entering the ac system. These refrigerants require a liquid charging method only, to do it right. My point being, its fine to charge with liquid if doing it correctly. After bleeding hoses and manifold with gas to purge all air out, or leaving them under full vacuum just purging middle tank hose to manifold, charging or breaking a vacuum can proceed. One type of charging technique is a slow interval liquid charge. Invert tank upside down for liquid charge, and crack open suction port on manifold for few seconds, then close valve, while listening to compressor. If no extra load sounds are comping from the compressor after few seconds of liquid charge then you can dump in a little more for few seconds a time. Wait 20-30 seconds between dumps to let system balance out, then continue. If at any time your hear a change in compressor tone/load stop the charge at least temporarily till system balances itself out, then continue till properly charged. With our 996 ac system charge ports being in the front of car and compressor all the way in back, its doubtful any liquid would ever make it back to compressor before flashing off in piping on way back to compressor.... For automotive use, I'd recommend a thermometer in dash vents with ac on full fan, lowest temp setting, recirculate on, all windows open, car in shade. As you charge watch temp on dash thermometer for a temp of high 40s to mid/hi 50. Somewhere around 48 to 58 is good depending on ambient temps. With liquid charging, no heat on tank is ever required. Especially when breaking a vacuum on a fully leak free vacuumed system at full vacuum. Also contrary to popular beliefs, vacuum a small system for at least an hour or more to get to as close to a perfect vacuum as possible because thats when moisture will boil off and leave the system dry... If you really want to test for leaks, after vacuuming the system for a couple of hours with a quality vac pump, close off both high and low side manifold wheels, turn off pump and exactly note low/hi side vacuum reading. Leave system untouched over nite and see if any vacuum was lost over night... Before doing above test, or actually before ever using your manifold gauge set and hoses, make sure all hoses/manifold and connections are 100% leak free using soap suds with at least 60psi test pressure., jmo
