KrazyK Im all for DIY on these cars and im always trying to find something to fix or tear appart and clean but i think im gona pass on this one and have the indy do it.

I only recomend this to DIYers that have time to inspect the removed parts before ordering new ones.

DIY is the only way I can afford the 996 because there is no way my wife would allow the costs of the repair bills I see posted.

ebay has it for $450 for the sachs clutch kit and suncoast is roughly $200 more for the genuine porsche repair kit.

I have never changed the disc without changing pressure plate.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

It looked like the crossmember bolts were stripped/sheared off due to using air tools to tighten them the previous time the clutch was done (at a Porsche dealer, no less...).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone
Its time for a new clutch on my DD 03 C2 with 62K miles. I was looking at suncoast and ebay for the complete clutch kit. ebay has it for $450 for the sachs clutch kit and suncoast is roughly $200 more for the genuine porsche repair kit.
Here come the questions
1) Do i need the complete kit or can i get away with just a clutch disc?
2) Which would be a better option coming from experience sachs or genuine?
3) Roughly how much should just labor set me back if i take it in to an indy.
Thanks in advance for everyones input.......
Arthur
1.) I've always replaced the disk and the pressure plate as a pair; regardless of what vehicle it is.
2.) From what I read, Sachs = OEM.
3.) Research says "book time" is 10+ hours, at $120/hr (+/-)... $1200+ in labor. So about $2k before "while you're in there" fixes.
I had my clutch done in October in my C4S. Total cost was $4025 and it included the following:
1. Labor
2. OEM clutch pressure plate/disk/flywheel/throwout bearing/fork/fork pivot
3. LNE ceramic IMS bearing retrofit
4. Oil/filter change
5. New rear main seal
6. New transmission input shaft seal
7. New driveshaft vibration damper
8. Drill and re-tap a couple stripped out bolts on the transmission support brace
That would have given me a heart attack. Im surprised they charged that much.
The Sachs kit is considered OEM so for @$450 you can DIY and save. The other things are easy once your there. Strange about the stripped threads for trans mount?
Thanks for all the great and helpfull info...
I wish i had the time and right tools to do a DIY, unfortunatly im just gona order the sachs from ebay unless my indy can get a better price for the same kit and let him change it.
As for symptoms mine started with the pedal feeling lighter then usual after some spirited driving but yesterday morning when i pressed the clutch pedal to back out of my driveway it sounded like a ducati dry clutch when pressed all the way, soon as i let it go about an inch there is no noise. So no driving until i get it fixed.
996pp, the cars really are fun to work on but I understand your reason. DIY is the only way I can afford the 996 because there is no way my wife would allow the costs of the repair bills I see posted. She already gripes everytime a package gets delivered.
KrazyK Im all for DIY on these cars and im always trying to find something to fix or tear appart and clean but i think im gona pass on this one and have the indy do it. As for the wife what she doesnt know doesnt hurt her
. Ive got the concept down.... she doesnt find out about my new or old toys until i get it home LOL
Only $1100 of that was labor, so three quarters of the cost was parts. Not a bad deal if you ask me. Hell, just a damn flywheel is $600. Normally I'd do the work myself, but I just didn't have the free time to tackle it at the time, so I had to suck it up and pay for labor.
It looked like the crossmember bolts were stripped/sheared off due to using air tools to tighten them the previous time the clutch was done (at a Porsche dealer, no less...).
Get this, called my indy, and both of the dealers in the area as I need a new clutch (starting to slip). BOTH of the dealers in the area were cheaper than the Indy (quoted 2-2500), one dealership was 1,850 and the other was 1,550...go figure.
DS
If you want to do it right you should do everything the guy in post 3 did. I would say if you are having it done.. 3K to do it 100% correctly like he did
If the clutch is not slipping yet, a new disk and a new release bearing is probably enough. Then next time, change everything.
As a side note, the 996 release bearing is the same part as the one for a '97 Audi A4 1.8T. The Audi part is around $25 and the 996 part is around $150. I have on in my 996.....happy savings!!
Its not slipping but that noise when pedal is pressed all the way that i can only describe it similar to the ducati dry clutch noise is what got me worried.
Does the engine and tranny get droped for the job or just tranny?
Darrick, thats one of the reasons why I dont allow anyone else to perform work on my car. I dont think they care. The other reasons are:
I love to DIY and I cant afford to pay for labor! But I do respect others decisions not to so no offense intended.
Valid opinion but with the time involved in pulling trans it makes sense to always replace all three. The cost of a PP is nothing compared to your time. I have never changed the disc without changing pressure plate. Just reading these posts has got me wanting to change mine. I have the total costs for clutch kit, IMSB, and RMS at @$750. Thats chump change to most of you guys but its at least 3 days of griping I have to put up with from my wife. Its hard to hide the packages when she gets home before me and I try not to anger her. Hope I can wait a little longer.
I've reused pressure plares before but only if they were in good shape. Once the clutch start slipping it usually means a new pressure plate is in order. I only recomend this to DIYers that have time to inspect the removed parts before ordering new ones. It's not for everyone but it is a viable, cost efective option.
I did it myself at home and I only spent 350 euros for the complete sachs clutch kit.
Not a dificult job at all, just time consuming but as I guess that all of us have other cars theres no problem with having the porsche on jackstands.
My Indy called today and he said he will charge me $1000
just for labor, but he also offered he will let me use one of his bays and tools if i want to do it myself on saturday. So im considering to make it into dad and son project if my dad is free that day.
For those of you who have done this is there any (tricks) that will make it just a little bit easier to drop the tranny?
No real break in required.
But remember the clutch is new and since the contact between the friction surfaces is not yet optimum avoid excessive slipping or other harsh treatment for a while.
A few hundred miles of reasonable use ought to be enough to adapt the friction surfaces to each other.
Then afterwards avoid excessive slipping and other harsh treatment.
Not sure if anyone answered you. Some drop the whole engine and trans at the same time and some just drop the trans. IMO if I had the tools I would drop the entire thing. But being I dont have a lift or proper engine stand I just dropped the trans.
Tnx Shark Attack.....I was still not clear on droping the whole thing or just trans.
I ordered the clutch kit from ebay, came out to be $485 with tax and shipping (which is pretty good compared to other places). Im hoping to get it by friday or early saturday cuz ive decided to do a diy with my dad at my indy's shop. He has offered me one of his jacks and tools for saturday. So with the time frame being so short and i dont want to take up his space more then a day im just gona drop the trans for the job.
Wait until you've put the clutch disk back on and you'll be able to answer this question yourself. Getting the transmission back on in the air (lines up and shaft inserted) isn't exactly easy. Some will say that doing it on the ground is easier - which is absolutely correct. Just not sure if the ease is worth dropping the whole engine.
For what it's worth, when I did my clutch, I left the engine in the car and just dropped the transmission.
BTW, do you have to get this all done in one day? Somebody earlier pointed out that this is a 10 hour book job. Personally I usually budget 2x book time for my first time through a diy, so doing it in a day would be almost impossible for me.
Having a lift, assuming you have the associated high lift transmission jack, would definitely have saved me time. Doing the job on jack stands alone is very doable, but it's not going to save you any time.
Next time through, I'd like to have a lift and air tools to speed things up.
Ben
The shop thats letting me use his tools and jacks is a friend of my old man and he is already being super nice to me. Thus, i want to have my car off his jack asap just incase he needs the space (after all he needs to run his business)...
When you are on a lift one of these is really helpful. On the ground just as easy to use Shark Attack's Porsche approved Mahogany 4x4.
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...yesterday.html
That looks very well made and helpful but to invest $200-300 in something that youre only gona use maybe once in two years i think im just gona use Shark Attack's porsche approved 4x4
Finally got my clutch done last saturday. RMS was starting to leak so swaped that out too....
Total cost was roughly $600 with the new clutch kit and RMS seal.
Started about 9:00am and was done by 6:00pm with alot of help from my pops.....clutch feels 100 times better with the exception of having a lighter pedal....(thinking about removing the booster spring but i read that it effects cruise control, pretty useless on these cars especially with a 6 speed but just the thought of not having it will probably bug me.
