- I'd pull oil filter and put new one in during PPI - and inspect old filter for metal.

Would give you some piece of mind that no immediate problem exists - but especially on low mileage car I would probably budget for new clutch/IMS - and just consider than insurance to run the car for next 5+ years without that particular problem ruining your day ...

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys,
I'm trying to provide some advice to a friend who is considering buying a 2002 911 Targa.
The car in question has very low mileage, but are there any serious concerns to look out for other than the rear main oil seal on the 2002 996?
Thanks in advance!
Get a good pre-purchase inspection at Porsche specialist before handing over the check. A few other things that should be checked (and will help you negotiate the price if they need doing)
- Make sure windows drop when you open door handles - regulator replacement ~$600
- Check brake pad/rotor condition - replacement is $1000+
- I'd pull oil filter and put new one in during PPI - and inspect old filter for metal. Would give you some piece of mind that no immediate problem exists - but especially on low mileage car I would probably budget for new clutch/IMS - and just consider than insurance to run the car for next 5+ years without that particular problem ruining your day ... (worth to do AOS at that age while in there)
- Water pump - probably close to needing replacement at that age - is coolant level at min (cold), any sign of oil in coolant ? any sign of leaks at pump ? Is expansion tank yellowed ? (at 10 years probably good to also budget for new pump and coolant change)
- Change transmission oil if not done in last 5 years
- Tire condition (and Age from DOT sticker). Need to budget to replace if >6 years (some would argue at > 4 years)
There is probably more I am missing - but that is a good start - again PPI guy should have detailed checklist he can give you before PPI (make sure it covers all this and more) and after PPI ....
(Overall these cars are very reliable - especially at 10 years old - but use the above to negotiate price - and/or budget for some maintenance)
