Indy cleaned the contacts under the seat and tightened the ground and that has made the airbag light go away at least until he can get it inspected.

The PO had the retrofit harness installed along with a new buckle a couple years earlier and soon after I bought the car the light came on.

The PO had the buckle and ground wire replaced under CPO warranty in 2005 and then again on 5/10/11 just before I purchased the car.

My Indy emailed me that he pulled the seat and "it looks like someone has been in the wiring harness", my guess is it was the PO before trying to sell it and needing the airbag light off (before replacing buckle).

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all. Long time lurker as I bought a '99 C2 a year ago today. It had 50k and the PO purchased it as a CPO with 45k in 2005, now at 54k. It's at my Indy now after having the AOS go out on me. I had him do the AOS/RMS/clutch and IMS LN upgrade since he was in there anyway. All went well and IMS had some wear but not in too bad a shape.
The big problem is the driver buckle and airbag light. The PO had the buckle and ground wire replaced under CPO warranty in 2005 and then again on 5/10/11 just before I purchased the car. The airbag light came on for me in Dec, 6 months later. My Indy says its throwing driver buckle code, he reset it but it came back on during test drives. Indy is highly recommended but his specialization is in earlier air cooled Porsches (the bulk of his business). I've searched for fixes here but can't find a definitive answer. I don't want to put a 3rd buckle in to just have it go in 6 months. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks to all of you for the great help and interesting reading over the last year
Here's a pic from the day of purchase.

Somebody suggested just running a jumper between the two sections under the seat but I don't know if this would work. Seems like it should. Wish there was a DIY on it.
Thanks and yes a DIY would be nice. I haven't found any answers that solve the actual problem like "this is happening because of X and to fix you need to do Y".
One poster recommended using DeOxit, (available at radio shacks locally, and online). He advised he sprayed it with deoxit, and then reset it with his durametric, and it hasn't come back on for years. I've got the deoxit, but haven't had two seconds to go out and spray it in the buckles. Ironically, my airbag light went away for the first time since I've owned it last night all on it's own, and the bulb isn't burned out, so who knows with these things.
Thanks Invius. I read that post when I was searching but did not think that would solve my problem as the buckle is only a year old. Interesting that yours went out on its own.
PJ, I had the same thing happen to mine. The PO had the retrofit harness installed along with a new buckle a couple years earlier and soon after I bought the car the light came on. My fix was to spray some contact cleaner into the buckle and use some stiff cardboard to rub on the contacts. I reset the light and so far so good. Thought I would give that a try before buying a new buckle.
Thanks to both of you. My Indy emailed me that he pulled the seat and "it looks like someone has been in the wiring harness", my guess is it was the PO before trying to sell it and needing the airbag light off (before replacing buckle). Indy cleaned the contacts under the seat and tightened the ground and that has made the airbag light go away at least until he can get it inspected. I will post a full size picture of a 'tampered with' wiring harness in case future people with this problem do a search.
Another Modder didn't know what the hell he was doing and effed up the electrics for a new unsuspecting owner. They make me puke. Now would a PPI bring these faults to light. I suspect NO. The new owner unfortunately has to foot the bill to put things right.
My car is currently in for repair for the same issue (4th time in 8 years). The dealer now says that the TSB calls for a new air bag control module. This is basically the last course of action to take afterr repeated seat belt buckle and wire harness replacements. Hope this helps.
I just wanted to give an update on this. My Indy cleaned the connections and the ground wire and the airbag light went away. It's stayed off for over week now. Saved me the $300 to put a 3rd drivers buckle in but we'll see how long it takes for the light to come back.
Thanks again for the help!
Which area looked "tempered with"?
Hurdi, remember when someone jumped to conclusion with SacTownGuy's engine failure?
So the alleged tempering was not the source of the problem? That is a good outcome, time and grime can cause unexpected issues, good to read this thread should similar problem occur to me in the future, I've fixed issues over the years by simply making sure electrical contact surfaces are in tip-top shape.
My understanding is that the airbag works as it should even if the airbag warning light is illuminated. So... can I just simply remove a bulb behind the round warning indicator in the dash and it will be out forever?
Aviograhy- my understanding is that all of the wires should be bundled up together, apparently they were separated where you can see them all "unbundled". I don't think the tampering caused the problem but it made my Indy nervous.
Trapperdog- my research led me to believe that even if the airbag light is on, the system will still function. But my Indy, who only works on Porsches, says it may not and on my final paperwork that he made me sign it states in capital bold writing "AIRBAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY IF THE LIGHT IS ON". Or something to that effect. Maybe someone here can shed more light on that.
Car looks nice, enjoy.
I'm going to start keeping track of all of the good IMS' replaced with inferior bearings, I want to scream. Ahhhhhhh, OK I feel better.
