Suspected cause
Even if it was the most basic 996 you can find (no option whatsoever), that is cheap !
Leading evidence: 'most basic 996 you can find (no option whatsoever)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'most basic 996 you can find (no option whatsoever)' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean its mileage' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Clean ppi, the mileage shouldn't be a major concern

If you have service records and it has a clean PPI, the mileage shouldn't be a major concern.

I'd want to know if the clutch has been replaced, has the RMS leaked in the past and has that been addressed, and what other wear items have been replaced...

I would also run a carfax and autocheck on both to verify the cars history.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am looking to buy a 996 and found 2 on the Craigslist.
One is a 1999 996 with 36,000 miles on it. It has 2 owners
Another one is a 2002 996 mkII with 96,000 miles on it. It has 3 owners. the interior looks pretty clean for its mileage.
They are in the price range of 18,000 to 19,000. Assuming they are all in good condition with same add-ons. Which one is a better option and why?
Is this a good price range for these cars?
Thank you in advance for your help! I am looking forward to your insights
2002 no brainer... In 2002, the standard models underwent minor re-styling, which included switching to the Turbo-style headlamps and to a new front fascia. These were sometimes known as the Mk2 generation of the 996, or the 996.2. In addition, engine capacity was also increased to 3.6 litres across the range, yielding gains of 20 horsepower (15 kW) for the non-Turbo models.
I would go with the 2002. I had a 2000 and now a 2002. Overall the 02 is better made. The extra hp is worth it. Even though the 1999 has 36k you would have to put the same amount of money into maintenance, due to the year. Either way plan on doing an IMS upgrade on both models (
http://www.lnengineering.com/ims.html
). While doing the IMS have a new RMS seal and clutch installed.
There may be more options, and more power on the 02, but there are more miles as well at 96k. I have a 99 and although I may be lucky, I haven't had any issues to contend with after 3+ years. I don;t miss a glove compartment or the additional weight either.GL with your choice. Not sure how an 02 is better made either.
Hey,
Do you have any records? What condition are the cars in? Have you driven either one? Either car may need new brakes, tires, clutch, or other expensive service soon. For me personally, I would rather have the low mileage car.

I agree with the other comments on the '02. If you have service records and it has a clean PPI, the mileage shouldn't be a major concern. I'd want to know if the clutch has been replaced, has the RMS leaked in the past and has that been addressed, and what other wear items have been replaced...
I think I might look around a little more too. You can probably find some other '02s in the same general price range, maybe some with slightly less miles...
Here is the problem - if that is your budget then you will likely not find an 02 that is worth it as it will need too much and you will end up spending big dollars to get it right. The 99 is priced about market for that mileage but again you want to ensure that all the maintenance is up to date. For example, my 2002 car (shameless plug) is for sale at $27,500 and has fresh brakes, tires, fluids, exhaust, and engine and is decently optioned with full leather, power, etc. With motor prices now in the mid-high teens can you afford to drop the $20 it would take to do all the work just completed on my car?
If I had $19k to buy a porsche, it would go to a car that costs $17k (like a decent 87-89) and save the rest for the first year maintenance. If you are budgeting for an extra $3-4 grand, then maybe the 99 would be a good choice.
The '99 with such low mileage sounds like a very nice car. However, I agree with the majority here.......the 2002 definitely would be the better choice providing that it passes the PPI. Great price on the '02 as well! Tough to find one at that price! Good luck.
The cheapest 2002 that I have seen that wasn't wrecked or had problems of some sort was around $25K, so picking one up for $19k is a good deal. Oh wait, there was that pink pimped out one on eBay that was around $20k.
1999's with ~80K miles are pretty easy to find for <$20K.
Either way both cars are cheaper than any I have seen here in the Bay Area lately
What if the 2002 can be bought at $18,175, its Kelley Blue Book price in good condition, and the 1999 at $16,400, its KBB price in good condition. the 2002 has three owners, has been maintained well and has a few minor paint wears, the 1999 has been sitting in the garage for a while. Would you still choose the 2002?
Just to help out on 2002 + current pricing.
I just purchased this month a 2003 911 RWD with 27,000 miles for $27k. Perfect condition.
Before that I tried to find any 2002+ 911, even with high mileage and I couldn't find anything under $25k
But last week Momemtum Porsche in Dallas had a 2003 911 with 40,000 miles for $25k. Even if it was the most basic 996 you can find (no option whatsoever), that is cheap !
I think you should be able to find yourself a 50,000 miles 2002 car for 22k
Did I made your decision, harder
The big question is: are the 2002+ any more reliable ? I first got into the 2003 for that reason but after reading all the IMS and RMS problems... I think a good extended warranty is the only way to sleep at night.
Getting a warranty with 96k isn't going to happen. Vivling, if this isn't disposable cash you may want to tap the brakes on the Porsche purchase. There are some likely failures on these cars and if it's your only way to work you could have 2 problems.
I wouldn't buy either unless a PPI was done, and I would let the results of the PPI guide my decision. I would also run a carfax and autocheck on both to verify the cars history. 2 or 3 owners is not a big deal to me. But for those prices the 2002 seems to be the better choice. Do either of the cars have service records? Service records (or the lack thereof) are another major consideration.
Check out this fresh eBay comp. $26,100 for a MY 2000 C2 Cab with 33K miles. Buy the '99 and flip it on eBay and make $10K.
