Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I somehow misplaced the hardtop tool. Can I use an allen wrench in a pinch? Anyone know the size? Thanks

POST 2Original post

Yes, a metric allen wrench will fit, but I don't know the size.

POST 4Original post

how do you take off the top, is it really easy? Do I just use the tool and unscrew the two bolts in the back? what about the front? Sorry for stupid question, but I just got mine and I don't have a garage where I can do this type of stuff, so don't want to stuck when trying to remove....

POST 5Original post

you just engage the latch in the front. it's really easy, just tighten the two screw at the back after you engage the latch at the front. have fun.

POST 6Original post

what do you mean engage the front? I don't see any sort of levers, like my girlfriends bug has a lever thing to unlock it, I don't see anything at all. Do you just remove the screws on the back and pull it out?

POST 7Original post

Right in the middle of the top at the windshield is a plastic cover. It snaps into the roof with 4 pegs, 2 at the windshield and 2 about 7" back. Pull it down and you will see the latch. Press the red lock tab and pull the lock lever down. The window will be loose at the front. The two "latches" at the rear can be one of two types, a bayonet or screw. Both "unscrew" to unlock the rear. Get two people to lift the top and lifting the rear up while supporting the front remove it towards the rear. It weighs 73# and it is an awkward lift. Have a safe place to store the top ready. Also it is best to have the car on level ground when removing or mounting the top. A small ratchet with correct allen works well if you don't find the tool. I think the tool it is 8mm?? Did you look in the center arm rest glove box? Do a search here for "home made electric top lift". If you have a garage you can put one up and it will allow one person removal, storage and replace. You can also get a rollaround rack that will let you hide the top inside somewhere.

POST 8Original post

There is a lever in the center of the front. It might be under a trim plate.
