B&M SSK comes with only 1 shift ***** though.... hence the cheaper price. Ehh, you get what you pay for.
I just put in that 997SSK in my Turbo. AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why is Porsche offering the 'long shift' as standard ?
I always worry about replacing original parts with competition parts ... I assume there is a good reason for everything ?
Are short shifter harder on the transmission ? Considering that you have less travel to move from gear to gear, you must have to apply more force, no ?
I love short shifter but I hate to 'force' the lever into gears.
When I bought my Porsche, it came with a short shifter kit...in the trunk! The previous owner had it removed because the downshift was too sticky.

That is correct, one is for upshifting and the other is for downshifting! It is the predicessor to the PDK (double clutch) transmission offered on the 997.2 cars!

I got mine from Eric of Bumper Plugs. He had a big sale on them a while back. He's here in the forum.
As to the question of why does Porsche have the "long shift standard", I have some opinions.
All synchros require a lag time to "mesh" on gear changes. Milliseconds, probably, but still a required lag time. The 2002-2004 996's have this lag time built-in with the time it takes to shift with the "long shifter", even if you try to shift as fast as you can. The newer 911's, 2005 and up, have been advertised to have improved their synchros, and come with a Porsche short shift as a factory option. My 2005 987S has it.
I take my 2002 C4S to the track a lot. I have the B&M short shifter sitting on the shelf. I haven't made up my mind yet whether to instal the short shoft kit or not. I hesitate because, in the heat of the moment on track, I may shift faster with the short shifter than my synchros are designed for, and create a mess of my synchros and gears.
Palting, I've had the B&M short shifter in my 2002 C2 X51 for 3 years and do a few DEs every year - never had any trouble. I think you would love the change by installing it and never want to go back.
My 2cents, I installed a B&M short shifter and used it in my track car for years. I switched to the 997 stock shifter when I converted to 996spec. Although i never had any issues with the short shifter, I wanted that extra movement in case I selected the wrong gear (yikes). Net it takes a few track hours to adjust your timing to either system, but once adjusted both work fine.
I love the "bolt action" of the B&M shifter... There is "no forcing" involved.
