However, just yesterday I installed a "state of the art" sound system in the Accord.

On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being just write the damn check) where does this installation fall?

I paid about $30 for the upper pocket to replace the CD trays and then I paid $1,161 for the head unit, installation, and whatever fabrication that was done.

The OEM sound system uses an optic system that went the way of hte brontosausus, but after the speakers are wired, one antenna (XM?) fits in the holder behind the security light under the trim piece and the other antenna (GPS?) is mounted on the dash next to that trim piece.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Got my new Pioneer nav system installed this last week. The unit has navigation, bluetooth, and plays MP3s from CDs, DVDs, an SD card, or a USB device. Plays movies, too. What else could you desire?
I seem to have a leftover CDR 23 and Bose amp, if anyone's interested.
It looks nicely integrated. I recently added an Alpine system to one of my other cars,--nothing quite like DVDs when on a long drive through nothingness...
That's cool! That's exactly what I have in mind for mine - which model is this one? (hoping to score in Circuit City's liquidation...)
Thanks for the pics, now I don't have to imagine what it's going to look like.

Don, that install looks good.
Man, I wish I had known about the availability of your Bose, maybe that would have worked in my Honda. However, just yesterday I installed a "state of the art" sound system in the Accord. Here is a pic. The best part about it is that I don't have that fugly XM antenna on my car!
There is a guy on ebay that sells a very nice mounting kit. Unsure of the cost.
I cant tell you what an install costs because I did my own, I purchased the kit from the guy on ebay but painted the trim plate to match the factory look.
The Pioneer AVIC units seem to run anywhere from $600-$1800 depending on the one you buy. The AVIC-Z3 like mine has a hard drive in it.
On my unit I added the Bluetooth, XM radio and iPOD modules.
Of coure the unit does AM/FM as well.
It's an easy upgrade for cars 99-02 that do NOT have the MOST bus (03+).
My car is using all the original Bose amp/speakers etc.
Plenty of good info if you do a search here and on Renntech.
I have and AVIC-Z also in my Lambo with the backup camera, bluetooth, XM, and iPod modules.
The Nav can get you traffic info such as congestion or accident info and show you the speed of traffic on the freeways. It works great in L.A. but I suspect it won't be so good in rural areas.
There is a forum for the Pioneer navs:
http://www.avic411.com/forum/
use the search function and you can have the answer to any question you like about the AVIC units.
BTW these units come "locked" so you can't use the DVD and input addresses while the car is in motion but the forum has an easy solution that unlocks it
Marc,
Thanks for the info and the pic. That's really a clean installation - great job!

The model that I bought is the F900BT. The difference between this model and the next model down, the F700BT, is that the 900 plays Dvds and connects to MSNDirect. The 700 doesn't.
The total cost of the instal was about $1,200.
You can see the reflections of the antennas in the windshield in one of the pics.
The only pieces that my installer had to fabricate were the bezel around the radio and the little wedges on the sides of the hvac control. He covered those with a little black leather and, I think, did an excellant job.
This Pioneer unit uses the OEM Porsche antenna. The FM works fine, but the AM sucks. Since I hardly ever listen to AM, I don't know what the fix is.
Wow - I just got a quote from one of the high end stereo shops down here. I asked for a quote for the JVC KW NX7000 (this is one of the few double DIN units with a detachable faceplate [I have a cab]), ipod and bluetooth adaptor and they quoted me $2758...
Pretty steep - the price on the unit was at $1299 was $450 more than I found at an online retailer and they quoted 10 hours of labor at $100/hour... I about hit the floor, am I cheap or is this reasonable? On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being just write the damn check) where does this installation fall?
Thanks,
Rudy

Those look like nice and clean installs. All the additional functionality would be a bonus. If I spent more time in mine road-tripping I might investigate going down this route.
For my 04 system, I think I am limited for options; I'd consider the factory NAV head unit, but I hear its not very good.
Does anyone know if there is a write up for MOST upgrades?

Rudy -
On your 1 to 10 scale, I'd say this is a -5 (after they've had their way with you, offer you a smoke and tell you that they will still love you in the morning .)
The installation of my Pioneer unit was about 5 hours, not 10, and that included rewiring speakers when the OEM bose amp went away, installing the XM and GPS antennas, and fabricating the trim pieces.. I had had another independent shop quote me $450 for the installation if I supplied the head unit, wiring harness and attachments...they didn't carry Pioneer and the cold facts are that I could buy it as cheaply as they could since they weren't in the Pioneer dealer network.
Even though this car is not a cab, I've had a convertible Vette with a NAV system and the thought of needing a removable faceplate never crossed my mind. I guess I'm just not sold on the idea. Taking the faceplate off and hauling it around with me isn't something I would relish doing. One of the reasons I finally went with the built-in unit is because I got tired of having to remember to take my Garmin with me...but to each their own.
If I were you, I'd look around a bit more. There's bound to be a quality instal shop around that's a bit hungrier and not so greedy. I can't believe the streets are littlered with folks willing to separate themselves from $1,500 for a radio in their car.
Just my 2 YMMV
After spending that much, I'd expect a "maintenance agreement" for the next three weekends...
Well, having had a removable faceplate in a ragtop in the past, I didn't haul it around with me *every* time... only when I knew it would be unattended for a long period of time, otherwise I'd stash it (probably under the seat now since mine doesn't have a glove compartment)... you know what they say, you don't have to have the most secure looking house on the block, just more secure looking than your neighbor's... hopefully a bad guy would believe that the time and effort to rip it out my car wouldn't be worthwhile since the unit would be incomplete when he got done.
I will, and thanks for the response. On a lot of this pcar stuff it's a lot like asking a 5 year old how much a candy bar costs... (a thousand dollars... I'll take two!), so I don't know what's reasonable...

Marc,
Okay - I just searched eBay... before I try harder I thought I'd ask the question - would you mind letting us know who the ebay guy was?
Thanks,
Rudy
