If you car considering modding your 3.4L mufflers I would recommend the MK I mod.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just purchased a set of 997 mufflers on ebay. (lucky enough to find a set with tips for $200). I intend to do the Mk II mod when they arrive. I know some modification must be made to get them to fit on a 996, which is no problem.
My question is: Has anyone done the PSE hack on the 997 cans for a 996? Is there any difference in the sound of the 997s on a 996 with Mk II mod vice the 3.6 996 Mk II mod?
Either way, I'm looking forward to this mod and readily awaiting the new sounds that will resonate driving down the road.
Thanks,
Ken
Ken, I have not done the mod to 997 cans, but I would be surprised if there was much difference. Here is a link from the 997 FOrum which shows a different mod to the 997 cans. It is more like the MK I mod on 996 MK I cans.
997 PSE mod
Tim,
Much appreciated for the quick response and link.
I'm looking forward to this mod. I'll do a before / after audio recording once the mod is done.
After listening to the mod on youtube of the 3.6 hacks, I'll no doubt enjoy this one.
Thanks,
Ken
Thanks Chris. Loren over on Renntech hooked me up with juankimalo's info. Good information.
My father-in-law has a welder as well as a number of friends; other than buy the stainless steel for the bypass, this should be done pretty much on the cheap. I am hoping to get the 3.6 mufflers before the weekend and spend the day on Friday or Saturday getting this mod done.

Dave -
I didn't find a 997 to 996 MK mod on youtube per se, I did a search for "PSE Hack" and got a few for the 996 PSE mod - good sound clips. I'm guessing the sound is very similiar to what I am going for.
The MK II mod is "just OK" on 3.4L mufflers. I would say about 30% to 35% of the true PSE sound. However, the MK II mod on 3.6L mufflers ('02 - '04) is MUCH better. I did both of them and there is no comparison.
I would recommend that you not do the MK II mod the the 3.4L mufflers. While it is cheap ($100 - $200) the results are not worth your time/effort to remove the cans, have them modded, and then reinstall them again. Just my opinion.
I have done a lot of reading (and listening) on the mod for PSE and I believe it boils down to personal preference.
I'm not an expert, but I think any modification made to the stock mufflers 3.4 or 3.6 will improve the sound that will resonate from the backend. I think we can all agree that doing a Mk I or Mk II mod will achieve that sound we are looking for.
Knowing that a factory PSE system on these fine driving machines can be quite costly, doing these mods on the cheaper side will allow us to achieve some level of the PSE. And the money saved from not buying a factory PSE can be used for other mods (headers, air flow, aerokits, weekend trips down a nice road, etc)
The mufflers will be here Friday...I'll let you know how they turn out Saturday/Sunday.

I am not sure why, the there is something different between the 3.4L and 3.6L mufflers. If you car considering modding your 3.4L mufflers I would recommend the MK I mod. I have not heard it in person, but have heard a few audio clips and it sounds good. As
medtech
, said, he has the MK I mod on his 3.6L mufflers and he likes the sound.
No, it is not too loud. It offers a better sounding (I know "better" is a subjective word) lower rumble at start-up. Cruising at a constant speed at 3,000 - to 3,500 RPM they sound is nearly as quiet as stock. But get it above 4,000 RPM or under heavy throttle it is so sweet.
I'll make you a deal. If you don't like the sound when you mod some mufflers, I'll trade jobs with you, even up. What a deal!
You wouldn't mind being a Janitor ?
LOL

My 3.6's arrived today. Tomorrow morning I'll be doing the mods.
I knew the tubes coming out were a little longer than the 996 since these are 997s. My question is about the tips. They were a little wider and narrower than my 996 tips - no problem, but on the 997s, there are slots in them. Do these do anything specific or are they for cosmetic purposes.
Part # on the cans: 997.111.121.02
Part # on the tips: 997.111.152.00
Thanks,
Ken
sweet. my neighbor has a set of those handle bar streamers for bicycles- red, blue, yellow. I'll get those. I'll get the little basket she has on the front too..
Thanks
Sound pretty reasonable. I'm not even sure if these tips will fit the slots in the bumper. Putting them next to the slot, they do but it's a tight fit I'll find out soon enough.
