Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I went to an independant repair shop that does quite a bit of Porsche (including 996) work and his feeling was once the engine got past 30 - 40K mile on it, the likelyhood of the problem happening was pretty small.
Leading evidence: 'Repair shop' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair shop' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Would doing an engine change be very a very difficult DIY project?

Or charging high to dissuade owners of the earlier cars from salvaging car with replacement engine and giving dealer chance to "sell" owner new (or used) car?
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I know, I know. Not another darn engine thread!
As a perspective 996 owner, I wanted to do some further research on the whole subject and what's involved if the unlikely were to happen. It's been mentioned numerous times that a new engine can be purchased for around $8,000 but from where? Yeah, I searched here (maybe didn't use the right key words?), general online searches, and called two dealerships who told me it would $12,937 just for the engine w/o labor.
I've also read that one should anticipate another $4,000 in labor to swap the engine. Although it took me some time, I have taken out / installed an engine in a Honda which I'm sure is much easier than the 996 even if just because it could be lifted up. Would doing an engine change be very a very difficult DIY project? I'll admit I have limited mechanical abilities but am okay with taking something off and putting it back on again.
Thanks for bearing with yet one more engine thread and pointing me in the right direction.
Dave
By new do you mean rebuit? Rebuilt 996 engines are priced around $8 - $9K. I don't believe that Porsche will sell you a new engine for $8K. Porsche use to be the only place that supplied rebuilt 996 engines, but since the 996 is over 10 years old, I wouldn't be surprised if some speciality shops have rebuilt 996 engines for sale.
For Porsche remanufactuered engines a 3.4 is $11,010 at Sunset or Suncoast with a "rebuildable core." 3.6 is about $8,500 and 3.6 X51 about $9,600, again both with rebuildable cores. sunset requires an 3.4 core for a 3.4, and a 3.6 for a 3.6. Suncoast syas they can take a 3.4 core on a 3.6, but there is a difference in the core credit, so it will cost you a few hundred more for the engineto upgrade from a 3.4 to a 3.6. It also costs more to do the swap as the ECU/DME is different, and 3.4's are variocam and 3.6's are variocamplus.
The $4,000 is about what Roock is charging for the upgrade from 3.4 to 3.6. If it is a direct swap of a 3.4 or a 3.6 it should be between $1,500 and $2,000.
A "new" engine is well over $25,000.
There are a couple of palces rebuilding them, from a low of about $7,000 to RabyLN, which has lots of upgrades and strengthened components, but is about $15,000.
If you talk to those whose engines have not failed, most seem to think that is is not that common, I was amoung them until Sept. when my engine went. Now I have a different perspective, and it seems like every week or so you see someone's engine has gone on the various boards.
Not sure as I haven't purchased one quite yet. Right now I'm in the doing my homework stage. I went to an independant repair shop that does quite a bit of Porsche (including 996) work and his feeling was once the engine got past 30 - 40K mile on it, the likelyhood of the problem happening was pretty small. It's starting to sound like the 3.6 would be the way to go if within my budget.
Dharn, out of curiosity, which route did you take with the new engine?

How you doing?
Now get back to IT.com !
PS - I'm still trying to sell your books!!!
Some of you guys got me a bit concerned in many other posts with the whole engine deal so I just wanted to learn more what options exist just in case. I still have yet to buy our 996 yet. Or are you all saying I need to buy a replacement engine even before the car? LOL (That's not meant to offend anyone, just keeping it lite here.)
Bill, what year / type of Porsche do you own? Okay, okay. Back to ImprovedTouring.com .
Hope all is going well with your new business!
