Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I bought a slighly used BMW 650i to drive in the winter and I really like the car.
Leading evidence: 'Use bmw 650i' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cheapest 400 hp car' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean example in my area' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
Probably the cheapest 400 hp car on the market right now, and I'm sure you can find an '05 or '06 CPO car for a great deal.

There is actually a very clean example in my area with 72k for 12k.

Suggestion
If I were in your shoes I would look for a clean, low mile, well documented e39 M5.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'd been thinking lately of trading my car, 00 C4 Cab for a luxury performance auto for practicle reasons. If you contemplated doing the same, which would you get. Being realistic I know you can't really compare the two. But if you were moved that way, what would you consider. I've thought about the BMW 550I with 360hp, the S550 with 381hp, etc. Any other ideas. thanks
I am a huge fan of the 5 series. I have owned 6 different variations. If I were in your shoes I would look for a clean, low mile, well documented e39 M5. Preferably a 2000 model year. The cars are literally bullet proof if preventative maintanance was done. The cars can be had for cheap enough (roughly 18 - 20k) that it may be a possibiltity you can keep your beloved P-Car
I know I'll miss my Pcar if I get rid of it. When I seriously consider it, all I have to do is redline from 1st to third and I'll say to myself I'll be a fool to get rid of it. The e39 M5 is not a bad idea. Though I wish they made them with an automatic trans. Don't need 2 six speeds.
Something to consider is a Jag S-Type R (see my sig, I own one). I know they have a bad reputation for quality but mine has been no worse than any of the German cars. The good news is that they've taken a beating in the resale market, making it a very cheap way to get an M5 and E55 competitor. Probably the cheapest 400 hp car on the market right now, and I'm sure you can find an '05 or '06 CPO car for a great deal.
That being said, it's no 996 substitute. Every time I get in mine, it's a revelation and I wonder why I don't drive it more!
If an auto is a must have a e39 540 sport should be of consideration. The handling characteristics are virtually identical between the two with the M5 being just a touch more nose heavy. The good thing about is that they do not carry the heavy premium that the M5 does and they can even be found cheaper than the 540 6spd counter-parts. There is actually a very clean example in my area with 72k for 12k.
Keep the P-Car, get a chrysler mini van. (automatic)
See how long it takes till the van is for sale and you put to rest these thoughts of selling the P-Car again
Actually, if you are going with a luxury car, just get one you like. The performance is going to suck, so you had at least really like the ride and comfort (aka luxury)
Look at the specs on the 550, I beg to differ. If your baseline for performance is a Gallardo or a TT absolutely not. But if you look at 0-60 times, 1/4 mile times, handling abilities, etc. you would be suprised how close they are to our "performance" 996s
I think the A8L (or S8) is the prettiest luxury car on the road. But, I'm biased. I think recent MB cars are overrated. If not the Audi, would go for a 5-series. I've had two 5-series cars in the past (obviously different cars the newer generation) but loved 'em both. Honestly, drive them all and get the one that excites you most.
I get my issue of Panorama about once a month, as do all PCA members. One of the recent issues had offical photos of the new PANAMERA
, which might be an interesting option for the OP if he can wait until the end of the year. Otherwise I vote for the bimmer. My wife's DD is a 335i (6-speed manual
), and I think it is a great car.
My neighbor just got a white S5. I hate him.
You'll probably find there is no long-term compromise of Luxury Sport.
When you go to carve canyons, even an M5 seems like a boat compared to the 911.
Most likely you will be bored of the car within 2 years and want to trade again.
If you need to haul family around, keep the P-car which you'll never get bored of, and get a mini-van.
I love BMW's as well. I've owned two 7 series, three 5 series, and a 3 series. Out of all of them, I loved the 528 the most. Didn't have much HP, but it was pleasure to drive. Nothing that I've driven beats the porsche, but just considering my options
BMW are great handling cars... I have both the 528i and 325i, even though not a lot of hp's but they are fun to drive and they are relatively easy to maintain (DIY).
Evidently early 996 tippys, Caymans and Boxsters arent performance cars. I see what you are getting at though
...........
For the OP, the biggest thing, spend some seat time in whatever is of interest to you then and only then will you know what works best for you
Audi S8. D2's can be had for $15-20k. 186 mph luxury sport sedan w/ full-time quattro, all aluminum space frame, body, motor, suspension. Great interior and highly understated.
I bought a slighly used BMW 650i to drive in the winter and I really like the car. I might up it to an M6 and sell my cab.
We had dinner with Timo Bernard this summer and asked him about driving the Panamera. Of course he couldn't say anything but he had a big smile on his face. If you've got the cash it might be a great option.
how about an escalade...402HP....0-60 in about 6 secs.....luxury and speed....and you can upgrade with a turbo for even more fun!!
Ofcourse I am kidding....and you should look into the M5....great performance!! and luxury
I found myself contemplating the same decision several months back. I sold the 996 and after driving a ton of "performance" sedans I narrowed it down to the M3, XKR, M5, C63 AMG, and an E55 AMG. I ended up getting the E55 and do not regret it in the least bit. The car is a beast! over 500 ft lbs of torque is unreal! Especially when you have 4 doors, heated & massage seats, 4 person climate control, cupholders galore, and more airbags and safety features than you can imagine. No I can't approach that 25 mph curve at 55 mph like in the Porsche, but I can exit the curve faster and smoke the tires at will whenever I want. No regrets so far....
Are you talking abt the 2003 RS6? I don't think there are plans for getting the latest RS6 to the US.
I really like the s6 or the s8 personally.

the new maserati 2-door coupe is a awesome looking car and sounds great. the interior is fantastic, but do not know what they go for though...good luck in your search.
yes there is...ask Tim...it is a Racing white Honda Accord 2 door sport coupe the luxe sxtzw All wheel drive with independent exhaust pipes and standard tinted windows in the rear (so you don't see the finger pointing and laughing too much!!
I'm looking at a 5 series or a A4Avant(I want the wagon for utility, plus it looks better than the sedan). Don't bother trying to trade in, you'll honestly be insulted at the offer. Do what you need to do to get the 5 series or other car without trading.
