So you got codes even though you disconnected the battery?

So if I understand correctly you don't need to disconnect the battery?

Seat Removal

Suggestion

I just finished removing both seats in my 2000 996 to recover them and yes, as long as you dont start the car or put the key in the ignition, you dont have to disconnect the battery to prevent an airbag light.

Suggestion

- The E12 socket is unique + gets a LOT of torque to unbolt the seats, so I'd recommend a high quality one.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm planning to do a little work on my driver seat in my 03 C4S and was wondering if there's anything I need to be aware of before starting this? The mechanism for the lumbar support has stopped working and I'm thinking about adding heat elements to it since the car didn't come with that option. Should I disconnect the battery prior to the work? Is there a risk of causing any codes (airbag, etc.) if I pull the seat out? Thanks for the help!

POST 2Original post

I'd recommend disconnecting the battery so you don't throw an airbag code.

One thing that is a little unusual is that the bolts are e-torx. E12. Craftsman has a set that I picked up for a reasonable price.

I've seen one that shows how to do this on a Boxster, but not a 911. Is the procedure the same?

POST 9Original post

You Tube Let me know if it looks like just the seat backs can be swapped left to right without dismantling the skins please.

POST 10Original post

Having just done a bit of under seat work, just remember that you need to leave the battery connected in order to move the seats backwards for front seat bolt removal, and then forward for the rear seat bolt removal. Then you can disconnect the battery, disconnect the under seat wiring harness and remove the seats. I would recommend taking pictures of every connector, location and wiring harness before disconnecting. It is a very complicated wiring system under the seat.

POST 11Original post

Someone can correct me, but I seem to remember that it is important to not put the key in the ignition when the battery is removed so you dont get an airbag code. I have had the seats out on both cars and have gotten airbag codes, but have a way to reset the code, so its not a big deal.

If you are asking me: I didnt disconnect the battery, so I guess my comment didnt make any sense. Sorry.

No worries. I just wanted to clear that up. Thanks

POST 15Original post

Lots of good info here. There are a few things that are worth repeating though - Don't turn on ignition with the seat disconnected to avoid an airbag light. - The E12 socket is unique + gets a LOT of torque to unbolt the seats, so I'd recommend a high quality one. - Put a towel over your dash, steering wheel, and other interior bits like the shift and ebrake to avoid scuffing things. The seats aren't terribly heavy, but when you're trying to maneuver them and bent over in an awkward position they feel like they weigh a ton.

So if I understand correctly you don't need to disconnect the battery? Just don't put the key in the ignition while the seat is out?

POST 19Original post

Correct. No key until the seats are fully connected to the car.

POST 20Original post

POST 22Original post

I removed my drivers seat couple of years ago to facilitate taking out the console, anyhew I found one of those seat bolts damaged from previous seat belt receptacle work by an Indy, it looked to me like it had been tightened by a powerful ratchet and the torx portion was damaged. all that to say.. I did eventually get it out but it was a right pain, Im an ex Air Force techie and have some extraction skills from rebuilding gas turbine engines.. i had to order a new bolt an wait for its delivery to get the car fully functional again, if you are going to order the socket id get at least one bolt, I bought two from suncoast Porsche don't have the part number or the extra bolt. I think it was $10 per bolt and it came quickly good luck, be judicious with the torque applied and the angle you have the tools at it needs to be 90degrees or you might round the splines I find the more planning and reading, the less hassle i encounter well done you for researching via this excellent forum..

POST 23Original post

I disconnected the battery to be safe. The drivers side was a challenge as I had to come to the forum to get help undoing the harness.
