Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I opened my center console and now the lid will not close. It opened as normal by depressing the button with the key slot. Now it will not close. It appears that the lock mechanism does not engage and move forward to prevent the lid from opening. Is this a common issue? Its a 2001 996TT with 13k miles.

Very rare. Probably because most people rarely open and close the center cubby. Try inserting the key and turning the lock. Might want to spray for WD40 in the mechanism.

POST 3Original post

If you have the original strap-type hinge there may be enough play that the lock is not engaging. There is a replacement part that has an actual metal hinge and is far superior. Try pushing the lid toward the front of the car while pressing down on the front.

POST 4Original post

My new to me '99 had a broken hinge when it arrived last month. I replaced the flimsy OEM hinge with the metal hinge fix then discovered the latch wouldn't latch the lid down. I replaced the latch with a new one (still available from Porsche) and now it's all good. You have to remove the entire console to do it but the hardest part was figuring out how to swap the old lock cylinder into the new latch.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, thanks for all the comments. The hinge on the top lid is a small metal pin which is fully intact. The piece in the center console is like a injection molded piece which can be rotated by hand.

I used a flat screwdriver and pushed the locking mechanism out. It turns with key, but it will not latch. It does have the strap hinge but works well and not flimsy. The piece that looks like a claw doesnt grab the bar on the lid. I am skeptical that replacing the strap hinge thingy will fix it

Any chance to get a part number or source for that lid? Mine is broken and wont latch properly.
