Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I replaced my heater core and will be replacing the coolant hose that runs from the expansion tank to the water pump. A few questions: 1. Anybody ever remove the hose from the expansion tank with the tank cap on? Will the majority of coolant remain in the tank because of the vaccuum or will it indeed flow out while I'm trying to quickly push the new hose on? 2. Should I fill the heater core with coolant to limit the amount of air I will be bleeding? 3. Is there any harm in running the engine with a significant amount of air in the coolant system after these repairs are finished? I dont know how the water pump will take a huge void of air moving through it.

POST 2Original post

1. Don't fuss with that. You'll make a big mess, get coolant all over everything and create air pockets. Open the cap, then drain the coolant into a 5 gal bucket from the coolant drain plug on the rear of the engine. You'll get a few gallons from the block. Have additional buckets for any other hoses you disconnect. 2. No. Read on. 3. Yes. Air pockets are bad. There are complex procedures (or gambling) to lift the bleeder valve and just hope the air goes away. In short, buy a uview airlift 55000 for about $100. Assuming you have an air compressor of about 5 gal or more, you will fill your system without any air pockets and not have to worry about overheating or cracked heads. You will do this while the heater is turned all the way up and the fan blower is switched on low. This way the vacuum from the uview filling device will include the heater core loop. There are countless threads about this procedure. Spend a little time with the search feature. Please don't try to do it "your way". Instead, do it the right way.

POST 3Original post

at least you asked before doing this....your new motor could get replaced again if you opt to wing it with some funky a$$ method like that
