Dumb question, besides noise and performance is there any other reason to replace the 25 year old exhaust?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey all, motor is getting re-built and therefore I figured, I might as well replace the exhaust. I was curious what recommendations folks might have for my needs: I'm not looking for something that you can hear from 5 blocks away and scares the neighbors. Also, not looking for something thats really low grumbling. Just want something thats a better noise, not necessarily a louder one. I love the way that aircooled motors sound, and would love to hit that type of noise if possible. I realize its a completely different motor.

POST 2Original post

There is going to be a lot of different opinions. I have a FabSpeed exhaust and it is really good. The quality is excellent. Driving it is fairly quiet, but put your foot down and it comes alive. Just my two cents...

POST 3Original post

Pretty sure you're going to get a lot of rec's for these guys. I plan on going this route soon enough. Much better resonance as others have reported. https://fdmotorsports.net/fister-sport-exhaust

POST 5Original post

Been looking at the fabspeed, does it have drone at all?

POST 7Original post

Our Maxflo Exhaust is a fantastic option for your 996! Adds some sport car sound without droning. Feel free to reach out to me at [email removed] . I'd be happy to discuss further with you!

POST 8Original post

Our SpeedTech 996 X-Pipe with HJS cat substrates will substantially improve the sound, while retaining a civil sound level. No drone, just a much better sound quality. http://www.speedtechexhausts.com/ast1_010.htm

POST 9Original post

This a second vote for Fister. If you motor is out, have them send your mufflers to Fister. They will make the mods and return to you for less than $1K. The sound is awesome on acceleration and then turns quiet when you are cruising.

POST 10Original post

I personally think the best bang for your buck is the Fister mod . If you sneak out of the neighborhood at 3000 rpm's it basically is stock sounding . Get out of the neighborhood and let her rip it is a glorious sound . Plenty of bark and zero resonance.

POST 11Original post

Fisters plus xpipe best sound most old school Porsche like and this coming from a guy with fabspeed setup cats and maxflo

POST 12Original post

Fisters are very nice but a tad quiet for my taste, moving to Cargrpahic Super Sounds now.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 19911739

Curious to hear your thoughts on the difference in sound . My 3.8 with aftermarket headers/cat less x-pipe and Fister modded mufflers sounds fantastic but of course that is subjective . I just wish the mufflers weren't so heavy . Really my only complaint .

POST 14Original post

I did the fister in my shop and I love it. So do the neighbors. Less than $1000.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 19911825

It was lower in tone compared to some of the buddies with Fabspeeds and M&M under 4k rpm. It's an extremely clean sound for daily use for sure. For reference I'm running(as of this post) Fisters, Agency power headers and a 200CEL x pipe.

POST 16Original post

Here's a link with various sound clips of different systems. I went with Billy Boat mufflers and am very happy with the sound. Nothing crazy but certainly miles better than stock. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...deo-clips.html

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys, Fister definitely sounds appealing. Dumb question, besides noise and performance is there any other reason to replace the 25 year old exhaust?

POST 19Original post

Weight savings if you go with an aftermarket muffler. You really won't get any performance gains with any muffler. You can also get substantial weight savings and sound from a set of 200 cell cats. Importantly, your real performance gains come from 200 cell cats.

POST 20Original post

You can also go with an air intake kit from Flat Six, Fabspeed, etc. You will hear quite a bit more intake sound in the cockpit. I would save your money and stick with an oem air filter. While they tell you that you get performance gains, I doubt it. https://flat6motorsports.com/collect...30991975350356

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks @GC996 - with the motor rebuild and going 3.4 -> 3.7 I think I'll have all the performance I need for the street. My thinking around the exhaust is mostly for the purposes of longevity and slightly better sound.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 19912493

Love to hear about your rebuild!

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19912627

Brandon from Slakker is going to be doing it with the Hartech build.

POST 25Original post

Congrats! Are you building it for the street or track?

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19912696

definitely the street

POST 28Original post

Sounds good! Sound/loudness is a personal preference thing. What may be loud to one is not loud enough to others. Best thing to do is listen to as many videos as you can, go to as many PCA events as you can to hear different exhaust systems, talk to Brandon to see what he has found, and take it step by step so you dont waste your money (which is easy to do). I gotta say that if I wanted to maintain the stock exhaust system in the 996, and wanted more sound at higher rpms, but reasonable sound at lower rooms, I would go with the Fister Mod or Gundo hack. Mike Murphy who posted earlier is the guy to talk too since he has one. It sounds great at high rpms while at lower rpms it sounds "oem normal". No drone that I could hear.

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 19913189

I think this makes the most sense. I like the flat 6 growl on the lower end, the fister really "sings" above 4k and no drone whatsoever.

POST 32Original post

I also vote for the Fister mod. I have three cars with Flat Six headers, flat Six catted X-pipes and Fister modded mufflers. Love the sound.

POST 33Original post

I did SOUL cats (200) only, and sound is perfect.

POST 34Original post

I am a Cartographic fan for exhaust systems .

POST 35Original post

Newbie here! I'm pretty sure my 2004 Carrera has the original mufflers. What is the likelihood that these will be accepted for exchange by Fister if I purchase their (Fister) modded mufflers? Thanks!

POST 37Original post

Quotes source post: 19919040

I think he meant Cargraphic.

POST 38Original post

I work on 996s all the time and they lack sound from the factory. If you're looking to take your car to the next level without pissing off your neighbors, I highly recommend our sport cat x-pipe paired with our Maxflo mufflers. This combo not only enhances the sound but also refines the pitch for that aggressive, head-turning note. The nice part about the Maxflo mufflers is that they have no added interior drone so its not going to make your ears bleed every time you're cruising at low speeds. And with our 200 cell HJS cats and patent pending x-pipe design, you are getting the most efficient airflow out of the exhaust without any CEL issues or tuning required. For those wanting to add even more performance and an exciting induction growl, the Fabspeed dual filter carbon fiber intake systems are a fan favorite around here. They not only improve performance and sound but also give your engine bay a pretty sweet look! Check out some of these clips below! POST 39Original post

I have this setup and can verify it’s a great mid level sound without the mufflers my car sounded like a Lamborghini race car but it brought too much police attention I really miss that sound

POST 40Original post

I am getting a TT with B&B exhaust, cant wait to hear it in person. Will report back once I do.
