Better get the alignment done every change of tires and that has to be a special machine that does toe in and out with camber on all 4 wheels.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

29 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

my girlfriend showed this to me (she has a mk6 golf) thought u guys might want to take a look lol http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11496 I WILL POST THIS HERE NOW AS PPL ARE NOT READING- THIS IS NEITHER ABOUT ME OR MY GF, JUST A THREAD SHE SPOTTED ON HER MK6 FORUM. FOR FUTHER CLARITY, I HAVE A 1999 911, SHE HAS A 2010 VW GOLF.

POST 4Original post

From that forum: "Honestly, the GTI will be more fun to drive. I've owned a 2001 911 C4, and while it was totally baller and smooth, and a nice car, it was not as engaging or as nimble as the GTI. You will need a Carrera S/4S or Turbo for something more." WTF? This is crazy talk.

POST 6Original post

have to drive the GTi I guess, one of my fav VW's - Have not driven a new one, but being in my "new car" I can see what that peorson is saying - just saying and agree, who care... pics of the girlfriend please

POST 7Original post

Always loved GTI's, Owned a Mk 1 and a MkII 16v amoung other VW's ... but 996 and GTI are apples and oranges so that is one dopey comparison. That said, the new GTI is damn fun!

POST 8Original post

I agree you can not compare a GTI to a 911, even an older 911. I'd rather have my 996 than any GTI. But the cost of the 996 I believe is your issue. If money is an issue go with the GTI. Operating costs and repairs should be much cheaper.

POST 9Original post

I would choose a '04 R32 instead of a new GTI for the same money. Just saying...

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 8095417

agreed, thats was sort of the "gentleman's GTI"

POST 11Original post

POST 13Original post

there is a man who is focused early in the a.m

POST 14Original post

ummm.... yeah R32 is the ticket. the dsg even.... +1 gf pics. I like this comment: "911. F reason. Do the crazy **** while you're young and can get away with it. Also, poon factor."

POST 15Original post

The GTI is a great commuter/daily driver. It is also great fun on a twisty road. I've owned several of them, going back to an 84 Mk.1. The 911, on the other hand, is a very serious sports car capable of speeds well in excess of 150 mph and of being competitive on a racetrack right out of the box. Brand new, a 911 costs more than 3 GTIs. There are really no points of comparison between the two other than the superflous; number of wheels, presence of an internal combustion engine, existence on the Planet Earth, etc. Now, if the question is whether to buy a new or nearly new GTI or a 996 to use as a primary car, for most people the answer is pretty simple - get the GTI.

POST 16Original post

Here's what I would do so you can have the best of both worlds. But a 2006 - 2009 (MKV I believe) and pay it off in a few years. But then you KEEP it after it's paid off and buy a used 996 or perhaps a 997 by then. Then you have two great cars. I say this from experience as I wish I kept my 2006 GTI w/DSG. I would have it and the 996. But I kept my Wrangler because of winter weather, but I would much rather be tooling around in that GTI than my Wrangler. I'm finally ready to get rid of it after owning since 1996...getting older makes the bumpy ride not as much fun. But it just keeps running and won't stop even with the 2k miles I put on it per year.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

lol ya i thought it was funny kinda to completely different cars to be deciding between...

POST 19Original post

Make it easy on yourself and let your girlfriend decide. Then if she says GTI then dump her and get the 996 and two girlfriends this time. If she says 996 then get a couple extra girlfriends just like her. Pretty simple question and answer

POST 20Original post

I won't get into the argument about which car to get but I can tell you that i recently added a 2010 GTI as my daily driver. Previously my DD was a F250 Diesel which was great to tow with but seriously no fun to drive other than that. When I told my wife I was going to get a GTI she told me I'd look like a nerd driving one...LOL, but in the end she has to admit it's a hoot to drive. At my stage in life i'm not out to impress anyone and if I was motivated in that direction I have a decent stable to pick from. Back to the GTI, this is my 4th VW and they've done their homework on this car. For 27K is got 4 dr, 6 speed manual, leather, Sat radio and boost! Yes I could've bought a used Porsche but I'm pretty set there and I really wanted a 4 door. Great car in my opinion.

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

umm, just so we can clarify. its not me that wants the GTI. i have a 996, my gf just saw this on her mk6 forum.

POST 23Original post

quote from vr6growl; "Take the GTI. You are in college and do not know how/what to fix if things go wrong. The 996 will have things going wrong on it far more often than the GTI will. The Porsche will also cost a lot more to fix when it does break. When you get a bit older and settle into a job, pick up the 996 as a toy then, when it won't strand you if it breaks..." __________________ -Jason in MD Well he's got half of it right. "when you get older". IMO porsche is not for a teenager. Well I guess unless your famous then anything goes.

POST 24Original post

I have a mkV GTI, an 07, had it since new. It has software giving it about 250hp and 300lbs of torque. It is fun to drive, has great seats and steering wheel. I also own a 99 996, a 06 Cayman S, an 84 911 track car and a 05 Cayenne TT. The GTI is fun and a great car, but it does not compare to any of the Porsches we currently have or have owned. It all depends on what you are looking for. Want to dust an unsuspecting driver at a red light? A tuned GTI is great for that. Want to take the date out in a nice comfortable upscale interior, the GTI is great for that too. Want to get great gas mileage and keep a smile on your face and dollars in bank account, GTI is great for that. Want to have a total driving experience, get the 996 or other newer model P-car. Not the best at everything, but for driving enjoyment, they are fantastic. The GTI is good at everything, not really great at any one thing, yet I love mine.... Cheers

POST 25Original post

Maybe it all depends on what your major is and if the girlfriend is just that and not a planned on wife. Take some time to figure out if you want the major bucks oil, tires and fluid changes. Then you probably look at around $400 at least any time the car is dropped off at the shop and it isn't just any shop available. Has to be a porsche mechanic or you are really going to be sorry. Better get the alignment done every change of tires and that has to be a special machine that does toe in and out with camber on all 4 wheels. The car is a great car. Just while you go through some changing times in school and searching jobs with other major investments coming up quick the daily driver burning up tires and taking a chunk out of your budget might not fit your life style needs. What evers. If you like it get it. Just remember it eats tires and every 5 or 7k miles you ought to be changing the oil and filter to save yourself from regret later. So that's pretty much plan on sending your car on vacations to the porsche dealership or shop instead of you and the girl going some place if your budget isn't fat enough. If you do have enough money its still your car gets to go on vacations with or without you to the shop for check ups.

Well its relative, FWD will always be a boon for these cars. Light to light is not their strong point. Been there. EVEN with a lsd.

POST 28Original post

If you ski get the vw and the snowy mountain passes will be easier.

POST 29Original post

college student with no money and no tools. He shouldn't be considering a used 911 vs. a new gti. He should buy a used GTI. Save the 911 until after graduation. Sheesh... How about a little fiscal responsibility.
